Re: In re Bitcoin Devs are idiots
by

on 12/03/2013, 03:05:21 UTC

Let's try and stick to the topic.

The topic is you calling a group pf people idiots that are doing something you can't do.

Right now there's no question that they deserve to be called idiots. What's happening now was easily preventable and shouldn't have ever happened under any circumstances.

It's actually fucking amazing that this is first MAJOR bug in 4 years.

I don't disagree, but it's disappointing and discouraging that apparently this situation-- which is an important, obvious one!-- wasn't tested before the changes were rolled out. The best thing that can come from this is hopefully developers will be much more careful about these kinds of changes in the future.

Is the 'Bitcoin address used from GLBSE' a withdrawal address used while GLBSE was active, or the recovery address provided to GLBSE after it went down?

Hey dank, have you read "the seven habits of highly effectice people" yet, like I suggested?
No, my teachers have suggested that as well, to our class.

I thought you were 18?  Why do you have teachers?  Were you held back a couple years for "curing cancer" too much?
Ok, mlawrence, my teachers taught me this: when you add -ed to a verb, it makes it past tense.

Anyways.  New baby:

I got an email saying my balance had been paid out-- which was probably pretty easy for them, since I didn't have any coins at glbse at the time of the crash!

To be honest, if it's an insignificant amount like 3 BTC I'd just walk away. The potential shitstorm that looks to be bearing down on this part of the bitcoin ecosystem is *not* worth risking getting caught in for such a small amount.

Re: The EFF's damage to Bitcoin continues.
by
Eiii
on 03/10/2012, 09:35:52 UTC
I don't think this is a huge deal. The EFF is just advising that bitcoin could be a legal liability-- not that bitcoins are worthless, not that they're a fraud, not any of the countless things that people have said to try to discredit bitcoin. Just that adopting it may cause legal troubles down the road. If you think they're misadvising their clients by doing that, you're insane.

It'd be great if the EFF started pushing bitcoin, sure. There's no doubt in my mind that bitcoin or some similar cryptocurrency will significantly change how we transfer money in the next few decades regardless of what the EFF thinks. They don't have any obligation to defend or support bitcoin and I don't see why we should be upset at them for giving reasonable legal advice.

My 10BTC account's lock-in period expired today. I'll post here when it's been returned.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think accounts that expired even a week before the default announcement have been paid.

Yeah, I know that. I just figured it wouldn't be entirely reasonable to expect payment before that lock-in period was up. Now I just get to wait and see if hashking ever gets around to me Tongue

Re: Small time miners - What do you do when ASICs hit and you don't upgrade?
by

I'm just going to sell my cards for as much as or a little less than I bought them for. I bought them used and worked out how much they'd make before the block halving/ASIC hit, so I have no qualms about just selling them off and taking my profit.

Of course, if the ASIC thing doesn't pull though how it's expected to or somehow GPU mining is still even a little bit relevant, I'll just keep mining away. Having free electricity helps!

Anyone consider that it really might be SR? Perhaps the price crash triggered a lot of people to withdraw

The transaction took place before this most recent crash, though. Maybe it was the $15 high that people wanted to withdraw at?

I'm really happy to see fees start to get some use, it'll be interesting to see how pools choose transactions once the reward drops from the 50 everyone's so comfortable with now. Hopefully pools adopt this soon!

Man, everyone's freaking out about this, but an attack like this was bound to happen sooner or later. BCX may be an asshole, sure, but it's better for this to happen in the open rather than having it just suddenly be sprung out of nowhere to kill the chain.

Hell, even the fact that this attack is being publicly pre-announced should be enough to tip most of you off that this may not be nearly as big a threat as people are making it out to be.

And out of curiosity, what laws will BCX have broken by doing something like this?

Why don't you post under your real username? Mr.< 50 posts.

LOL

Because I've only recently started actually doing anything more in the bitcoin community than mining and hoarding coins. It's flattering that you assume I'm someone more experienced, though!

There's something stinky about this whole BFL thing. I suspect a lot of people are going to be out a lot of money once this shit goes down.

It seems like too big of an operation at this point to just disappear entirely, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if the units they sell don't deliver 100% on what buyers were promised.

With the way most PPS pools work, you don't really need to worry about how often the pool finds a block as I understand it.
