Re: [ANN] Bitgigs - Skills for bitcoins
by

How is this site any different than BitGigs.com?

Your site is a blatant rip-off. You took the name, in an attempt to mislead users. You even used the same font in your logo header.

I am all for competition in this area, but the way you are going about it seems sketchy.

BitGigs.com has established a reputation in the Bitcoin community over many years. I feel like what you are doing is a calculated attempt to mislead people.

I hope you change the name, and your branding for this site.

This is not right.

Re: I'm a webguy. How do I begin earning btc?

There are a few job boards where you can advertise your services. I see people get paid for providing web services everyday. You can post on this forum as well, but there's a chance you will get lost in the noise. Take a look at sites that are well-trafficked, searchable, and structured. There is a great demand for services that accept BTC.

Good Luck!

Re: How did you learn about Bitcoin?

I found out about it a few years ago from an article on Hacker News. It was titled something like "The Most Dangerous Idea in the World", or something like that. I was fascinated by the implications of bitcoin.

I got involved, created a valuable service, and never looked back.

I think your service sounds cool. People may be giving you a hard time, but some people could stand to gain from sound dating advice. You might want to try adding a listing on some popular bitcoin job boards. Your service will be easier to find there.

Good Luck!

If you do something well, see if someone will pay you to do it. I have seen people make btc doing small tasks everyday. Usually, you'll at least get a full bitcoin for your services. Good Luck!

Re: un-userfriendliness limiting bitcoin?
by

People will tolerate a reasonable level of technical difficulty if it's worth it. For example, what if you could only buy iPads with btc? It would incentivize the masses to find easiest ways to use them. A super simple solution would eventually evolve.

I don't think user experience is limiting bitcoin much. The lack of mainstream BTC-dependent services is what is limiting bitcoin. As soon as a tentpole application is developed, managing btc will quickly fade as an obstacle to adoption.

You can earn bitcoins doing all kinds of stuff. See what other people are offering to get some ideas. There is a high demand for programming and graphic design in this community. Make sure you check out sites that are active and attract a lot of traffic. I see people get paid to do small tasks everyday. Good luck!

Also, this board will initially try to rip apart your idea. This is a good thing. However, it can be a little discouraging and sometimes people just want to be jerks and shoot down your idea. I have proposed ideas on this forum I thought were great, and got terrible responses. My most recent concept was ripped. Heh heh

But, if you think you can pull it off, go for it! Just don't pay too much attention to the peanut gallery.

Good Luck!

Re: Reward for Good Grades
by
Electrongolf

When a kid focuses on good grades to attain some immediate reward, they have NO incentive to actually learn anything. They want to pass, to get points, to make the grade, for relatively short-term gratification. Incentivising learning in grade school or college to pay out for good grades would not help kids actually do better. It would only cause kids to scramble quickly to get the reward and do whatever it takes.

Can you point me to any references that back this up? I am interested in reading more about this.

I also think I did a poor job of explaining the idea. I wasn't suggesting you pay students for grades. I was thinking, from a student's perspective that it would be cool to trade credits you earn for an iPod at the end of the year, or something.

I wasn't aware of the psychological implications of rewarding students for doing well.

A student should have enough drive to earn grades on there own. The incentive is already there a good education, good job, and good life. However, this would encourage students... bah kids in the US.... I didnt realize blackboard was used worldwide.

Hmmm. I wasn't asking what a student's motivations "should" be. The question was in regards to the effect incentives might have on learning. I appreciate your opinion, but I disagree that anyone "should" think a certain way about anything. It's this kind of thinking that stifles innovation.

Reward for Good Grades
by
Electrongolf
on 19/05/2012, 01:52:27 UTC
What do you guys think about being rewarded for high marks in school?

Thinking about developing a Blackboard/Moodle plugin that rewards students in BTC for good grades. I haven't done much research on the effects getting paid for good grades, but I would sure try harder if there was a tangible reward.

The way it would work is that for each assignment, the instructor's final mark triggers a BTC transaction from an 'assignment pool', depending on the grade and originality score. I wouldn't call the reward 'bitcoin'. I would call them something like 'class credits'. I would also provide instructions on how to use them to buy something, or exchange them for cash.

Anybody have input in regards to incentivized learning?

Re: Where do you see bit coin in the next 2 - 6 months
by

Hmmm. I'm not sure how much a rise in BTC price correlates with what's going on with fiat money. I haven't noticed BTC fluctuate much in accordance with international currency markets.

I think a better indicator of where BTC will be is found looking at the various goods and services that use BTC. For example, if a popular game that uses BTC as currency pops up, the price will skyrocket. I don't think you would see the same effect with changes in the currency market.

That being said, I think it will steadily rise no matter what. Want to see it skyrocket? Support Bitcoin Services!

Re: Mini Market looking into accepting Bitcoin
by

I think it's cool that a mini market might accept bitcoin. It would be even cooler if they could somehow sell them. I think one of the biggest barriers to entry for BTC is actually getting a hold of them. Once that's fixed, more stores would probably begin accepting them.

Make the image of Bitcoins better by creating a useful service that needs BTC to function. Right now, Silk Road is the only mainstream application that is created around bitcoins inherent utility. Once there's a popular bitcoin only product, the image will change in a good way.

There is advertising space available on BitGigs. If interested, you can bid on available spots through Operation Fabulous. You will find all traffic stats and everything there.
