HDD Proof of Capacity Mining, is it Viable?
by
Emperion
on 30/10/2014, 14:27:50 UTC
HDD Mining is now possible through a coin called Burstcoin. While there are ways of mining Burstcoin using PoW methods, BurstCoin is meant to be mined using a unique proof of capacity algorithm.

Prior to mining, miners generate segments of data known as plots that are saved to the hard-drive. The more plots stored; the faster a miner can mine. With every unsolved block, the miner’s hard-drive will search through the saved plots to estimate a timeframe for which it can mine a block if that block has not been found. Once the hard-drive reads through the plots, it will sit idly until the block can be solved. In theory, this means that HDD mining is incredibly power efficient and can be safely done on a laptop, unlike PoW mining.

Disclaimer: The author has no holdings in Burstcoin, nor has he ever personally mined Burstcoin.

The Burstcoin wallet is a web-based java wallet that requires some java knowledge to setup. The setup instructions are fairly vague, and a lot of people have been having troubles setting up everything they will need to mine. Miners will need to edit.BAT and SH files with specific perimeters that are not well documented. Generating the plots requires both significant HDD space, and time. To generate plots for a 2 TB hard-drive, the process could take up to 24 hours based on your computer’s hardware. HDD Mining with less than 1 TB at this point probably isn’t worth it.

Blockchain Technology Can Significantly Simplify Modern Banking
by
Emperion
on 28/10/2014, 19:01:10 UTC
Oliver Bussmann, CIO of Swiss Bank, believes that the Blockchain is the most disruptive force within the Financial Sector. The decentralized ledger of transactions could also be used to store documents which after publication, could no longer be tampered with. Documents stored on the Blockchain would be authenticated through the same underlying technology that powers Bitcoin. While being almost completely unknown in 2009, Bitcoin has become a hot topic of debate among corporations, banks, and governments.

The World Opens Up to Blockchain Technology

In a report in September, The Bank of England formally recognized the technology’s potential saying that it was a “significant innovation” and that it could have ” far-reaching implications.” Bitcoins associated to the dark web deters large corporations and financial institutions from publicly talking about the disruptive technology and slows integration.

The current banking system used in the majority of the world is based on technology that is over forty years old called Automated Clearing House or ACH. ACH technology batches transactions together and sends them out to be cleared in set intervals of time, this is why most bank transactions take 2-4 days to go through. By integrating Blockchain technology in modern day banking, transactions could be cleared instantly, cheaply, and more securely.

Haunted Hashlet Cloud Mining
by
Emperion
on 23/10/2014, 23:19:18 UTC
Hello everyone! I am here to discuss some features that we could see in the upcoming Haunted Hashlet as hinted by Josh’s profile picture. For those of you who haven’t seen it, here it is!

http://cryptocoinchronicle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/766VkNn.png

This Hashlet would obviously be launched sometime in the next two weeks prior to Halloween. The price would likely be between $20-50 depending on the algorithm and power of the Hashlet. If it takes a mirror of the Zen Hashlet, we are looking at closer to the $20 price point though there might be a slight mark-up for the legendary branding and collectible nature of the Hashlet. Also, we can likely expect the Hashlet to be more readily available than the Remember Hashlet, and much more readily available than the Vegas Hashlet.

Because this is based on a holiday, it would be reasonable for GAW to increase the quantity supplied as many people would want to collect these. Because of Project Prime, I think it would be more likely to be a Zen Mirror than a Prime Mirror and also be closer to the $20 price range due to many people wanting one.

Magicoin: The Coin of The CPU Miner
by
Emperion
on 19/10/2014, 12:45:10 UTC
OCTOBER, 19, 2014 — Atlanta, Georgia, USA — Magicoin (XMG), a unique hybrid Cryptocurrency utilizes a unique M7M algorithm that allows only CPU Mining. XMG focuses on fairness for all that are involved in the mining process. By removing the competitive nature of mining, XMG offers an even playing field for anyone looking to mine cryptocurrencies without expensive equipment.

Unlike normal proof of work mining, XMG solves four major problems that face other coins, these are:

Miners have a hard time profiting from mining unless they started early.
Botnets are using free hardware to take away hashpower from legitimate miners
Mining farms significantly increase the difficulty of the network, thus making it more difficult for an average miner to profit.
All other proof of work coins require miners to purchase expensive equipment if they want to profit with their mining activities.
XMG offers users instant global payments with the use of generic computers. By design, XMG is a hybrid cryptocurrency utilizing proof of work and proof of stake II mechanisms. The Proof of work mining is done on a new hash algorithm called M7M. M7M is a combination of seven different hashing functions which is built to only be mined by CPU. In addition to M7M, XMG also uses a unique staking mechanism that is designed to resist the “rich-get-richer” trend.

LONDON, UK – October 6, 2014: Trustonic, the leading provider of Trusted Execution Environments (TEEs) for smart devices, today announced a collaboration with HTC, a global leader in innovation and design. The partnership will bring important new capabilities to HTC devices, including secure biometrics and a Trusted User Interface. “Our partnership with Trustonic is an important part of our mobile strategy, as security and convenience have become a differentiator for carriers and providers of mobile services,” said Drew Bamford, Corporate Vice President of Creative Labs at HTC.  “HTC users will be able to enjoy quick and effortless authentication to their digital lives.”

Ben Cade, CEO of Trustonic, said: “Trustonic’s partnership with HTC is underpinned by the need for a simpler, quicker and safer device experience that will enhance the digital lives of users.  Security needs to be simple and effective, in any context.  Trustonic makes it quick and easy for service providers and developers to add trust-enhanced services and to enrich the way people shop, work and view premium content.”

Bitcoin in Uganda: Disrupting Remittances in the Developing World
by
Emperion
on 01/10/2014, 17:37:48 UTC
http://cryptocoinchronicle.com/2014/10/guest-post-bitcoin-uganda-disrupting-remittances-developing-world/

There is perhaps no greater example of the financial sector's propensity to charge exorbitant fees than in the remittances space—estimated at $440 billion in 2010 according to the World Bank and rising each year—where companies like Western Union and MoneyGram charge anywhere from 6-15 % fees. Many individuals who can ill-afford such losses, predominately immigrants and expats, must pay these charges in order to send money home to family and friends abroad. To these individuals, Bitcoin could provide a means of personal empowerment and financial independence—a peer-to-peer tool that enables those who are most under-served or taken advantage of by the existing financial players to significantly reduce the fees and frictions incurred through domestic or international transfers.

In a recent documentary released by BitcoinFilm.org entitled “Bitcoin in Uganda: Empowering People,” we are introduced to Ronald, a young Ugandan who is currently attending university. Like most university students, Ronald looks to his family for financial support while pursuing his degree. His sister, Ronah, a Ugandan expat living in Massachusetts, and her husband James D’Angelo, a former NASA engineer, prominent Bitcoin evangelist, and founder of the World Bitcoin Network, are happy to lend Ronald some aid—but the thousands of miles and financial barriers that stand between them pose a significant problem.

For sending large sums, traditional money transfer services like MoneyGram and Western Union charge somewhat reasonable fees. But, if you frequently want to send amounts of $100 or less, as James and Ronah would like to do, these services become extremely expensive, making such transactions highly undesirable.

Over a year ago, Ronah and James decided to test out MoneyGram as a way to send Ronald money. James recounts the unpleasant and expensive experience of using these services: “MoneyGram tries to take at least $10 off you. If you do small transactions with Paypal, you are basically doubling your cost. If we could send small amounts of money then we wouldn’t have a need for an alternative. Remittances rely on the fact that you are sending thousands of dollars, but really, most people like to send smaller amounts—what they are doing is charging the crap out of the poor.”

Beyond the issue of costs, there are other barriers to receiving these funds from Ronald’s perspective, like the need for an assortment of IDs. Assuming his local ID would be sufficient to receive his funds from the nearby MoneyGram office, Ronald was dismayed to find out that a passport was actually mandatory to collect the money. Passports are neither necessary nor easy or cheap to come by for most Ugandans. Passports are not at all common, and for good reason—East Africans don’t need a passport to travel between borders in East Africa, and yet such documentation is necessary to pick up $40. Luckily, Ronald has another sister living in Uganda who was able to procure the funds for him after having recently acquired a passport at James’ insistence.

Around a year ago, after many frustrating attempts on both ends to send Ronald money, James and Ronah decided to send bitcoin to Ronald using the Bitcoin wallet Multibit. Multibit is a free and open source application. The wallet is completely decentralized—meaning there is no server network vulnerable to malicious attack or disruption by oppressive governments—and it only requires a small amount of data to be downloaded, so it is perfectly suited for basic laptops with limited hard drive space. According to co-founder Gary Rowe, “Multibit’s motivation is to make it possible for anyone, anywhere to obtain reliable Bitcoin software so that they can have access to an advanced financial system. We are confident that anyone with basic computer skills can access their Bitcoin on a desktop using [this] application.”

James walked Ronald through the process of downloading and using Multibit. The software is extremely simple and intuitive to use, allowing users to either request or send money. In order to send money, one simply puts in the amount that he would like to send, and includes the recipient’s Bitcoin address, which is basically an account number. Within minutes, Ronald set up his digital wallet, provided James with his Bitcoin address, and received a few dollars worth of bitcoin from James. After repeatedly sending money through MoneyGram, which takes up to three business days via the economy option, Ronald was floored—he’d received his money in seconds.

The process had its complications, of course, mainly when it came to exchanging bitcoin for Ugandan Shillings. Bitcoin is indeed still a new technology, so mass adoption has not occurred yet globally, and this process has been even slower in Africa than in the western world. Nevertheless, it only took Ronald a matter of minutes to find someone willing to exchange cash for bitcoin, and ironically, it was an employee at a local money transfer business who agreed to meet Ronald outside the shop in an unofficial capacity. In no time, Ronald whipped out his USB stick and laptop, and just like that, one of Uganda’s earliest person-to-person bitcoin exchanges occurred. “I have exchanged bitcoin for Ugandan Shilling three times at a low rate of 4%, on any amount I wanted to withdraw,” Ronald informed me. “I negotiated this rate with the guy who gave me cash. This was far better than the other times I used to receive money through MoneyGram . . . with Bitcoin, I saved a lot.”

ATLANTA, GA – OCTOBER 1, 2014 -- Georgia Institute of Technology will be the first university in the world to integrate bitcoin payments into its stadium concession sales and student dining and shopping credit system, announced Wednesday by BitPay, the world’s leading bitcoin payment processor.

Bitcoin point of sale devices will be located in the student section of Bobby Dodd Stadium, and the Barnes & Noble store in Tech Square will be home to a bitcoin-enabled point purchase terminal for student credit BuzzCards. Students who use bitcoin will now be able to purchase food and goods at almost all locations on the Tech campus.

Georgia Tech was founded in 1885 and remains one of the most prestigious public universities in the United States. It continues to engage itself with technological progress through its leading role in university adoption of bitcoin through an innovative deal brokered by IMG, the university’s multimedia rights partner.

As the “key to campus life” on Georgia Tech, the BuzzCard will be an important interface for student bitcoin use. Bitcoin's price continues downward trend, Is this good?
by
Emperion
on 30/09/2014, 02:26:03 UTC
Bitcoin's price is still down after a week of very high transaction volume. Over the last few weeks, Bitcoin's total transaction volume has increased significantly. When more bitcoins enter circulation , the price must drop for the demand of Bitcoin to keep up with the current supply. More people are spending their bitcoins rather than hoarding them. From an investor standpoint, this is likely seen as a negative thing as it is driving prices down to a very low level. From the average consumer's standpoint, this will increase adoption.

A Currency must have three basic properties, these are: A unit of account, a store of value, and a medium of exchange.  Bitcoin can be used to determine the value of something ( a unit of account). Almost all Altcoins are traded against Bitcoin, thus Bitcoin is used as a unit of account on a daily basis. Bitcoin functions as a store of value. Bitcoins hold a set value at any given time based on the laws of supply and demand and the trades that occur on a daily basis. There is a natural inflation rate due to more bitcoins constantly being mined. Bitcoin also functions as a medium of exchange. Bitcoin can be used to pay for a variety of goods and services. Bitcoin adoption has increased rapidly this year and transaction volumes are increasing.

Most countries still use 40 year old banking methods that are severely outdated. Transactions and bank deposits take 3-5 days to complete and are subject to large fees. Bitcoin transactions are very fast and cheap to send. Before the invention of user friendly wallets, Bitcoin was hard to use and very complicated. Hosted wallet services make using Bitcoin easy and more consumers are starting to realize that the technology is easy to use. I would highly recommend Using Circle for safe, and secure Bitcoin banking.

Halcyon, a relatively new but very successful altcoin, is leading the way in Altcoin anonymous transaction innovation. Halcyon has created the world’s first decentralized peer-to-peer mixing service which can make transactions increidbly anonymous. I got a chance to interview the lead developer of the coin about some of the aspects and future plans.

Disclaimer: The Author has no holdings in Halcyon.

WHAT IS HALCYON COIN?

Halcyon is a digital currency, recognized as a pioneer in truly anonymous digital transaction technology.

WHAT IS YOUR NAME AND POSITION WITH HALCYON COIN?

My name is HAL9000 and I am the lead developer for Halcyon Coin and other Halcyon-related initiatives.

WHAT SETS HALCYON COIN APART FROM OTHER ALTCOINS?

Halcyon Coin (HAL) is definitively set apart from other altcoins in that it delivers the world’s first decentralized peer-to-peer mixing service. Our unique Peersend technology uses a top-level layer to provide true economic anonymity and security. Upon suggestion of the Halcyon community, Peersend code received a thorough peer review by respected developer Dan Metcalf (XC Coin). Having fulfilled each promise of its ambitious development roadmap, Halcyon continues to deliver new features at an unprecedented rate. Recent releases have included a whitepaper, a press release and an info-graphic that uses common language to make sense of Peersend technology. Launching without issue on August 16th 2014, mining extraction was set to last for 14 days, yet significant domestic and international demand (particularly from China) completed the Proof of Work phase within only 8 days. Leading cryptoexchanges, Bittrex and Cryptsy, were quick to list Halcyon, creating significant volume and achieving a $300,000 USD market cap within 72 hours.

Halcyon continues to drive significant volume, an observation verified by Richie Lai, owner of Bittrex.com: “Halcyon launched with impressive volume, while the community interest has been favourable. It has been one of our top performers every day” Halcyon’s market strength and commercial potential has led it to be one of only five recognized currencies at the webshop AltcoinWarehouse.

Demandware’s enterprise cloud platform minimizes the costs and complexities of running global, omni-channel commerce operations. This platform empowers retailers to respond with agility to new market opportunities and evolving consumer expectations.  As businesses begin to recognize the benefits of bitcoin, including the elimination of transaction fees and the minimization of fraud and chargeback risks, it is not surprising that the currency is on the rise.  When considering these factors, it made perfect sense for Demandware Commerce to integrate with BitPay.

One could borrow multiple IDs to do multiple transactions? I guess

The hand scanner does nothing to prevent the situation where mtultiple people collude to bypass the limit. They could also ask whoever they are getting the ID's from to scan their hand as well.

Yeah, pretty sketchy

What wallet do you use for your Bitcoin?

With the development of Bitcoin, there are several possibilities for Bitcoin storage, these range from desktops wallets, online wallets, paper wallets and more. Though the security of these different types of wallets is different, all of the types of wallets are growing more secure.

It is common for people to use the wallet that works best with how they spend their Bitcoin, for those doing micro transactions, the electrum wallet is likely the way to go as it has a zero tx fee (for a very slow transaction). Others prefer desktop wallets and those on the move might prefer blockchain.info's mobile wallet to make purchases on the go from their smart phones.

So I ask, Which wallet do you use?

Go to: http://cryptocoinchronicle.com/2014/08/wallet-use-bitcoin/ to vote in the poll. I will be doing a write up in the next few days based on the results of this poll and the responses I get in the thread

Re: It costs $0.09 cents to send $0.24 cents of Bitcoin? Really?

Hi -

Tried to send $0.24 worth of bitcoin and this pops up:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-VjHB22LKq_E/U_ErypA9CQI/AAAAAAAAQlg/chDa1jLrhaw/s649-no/lolaz.jpg

Is this what they mean when they say Bitcoin can never be used for micro transactions?

Is this one of the 10 million things the Bitcoin dev team should have fixed 12 months ago, but has slated for "some time in the next 5 years" instead ?

Meanwhile the entire financial industry sees Bitcoin as having major flaws and never incorporates it.

And we never go ot the moon, because a bunch of developers have decided "we dont need that fixed right now.  we'll do it later" ?

Or is this something else?

-B-

Hopefully this will change in the future, if Bitcoin's value increases and the transaction fee remains the same, it could become more costly to send micro transactions like this.

so you have to scan your hand four times, and give them your id...and your phone number...and still pay only with cash? da fuq.

That's pretty rough. It shouldn't be that hard to purchase Bitcoin, though KYC and AML regulations are pretty strict
