what is your fan speed?  Mine is at 70% with a temp of 70c.
Yeah I had my fans on automatic (45%-50% on load) so now i've fix it to be manually on 60% and the temp decreased significantly (82C). should i decrease the temps a bit more then that? what software do you use for GPU fan control?
Thanks for your reply Smiley

- Relax and stop typing like a whiny dramatic child.
- You most likely have a shitty case with equally shitty ventilation, fix it by buying a non-shitty case or more fans.
- If the cards are sandwiched together, air will have a tough time getting in between the cards and the fan won't be as effective in cooling the card.
- If you were a real engineer you'd know that.
- Place a wedge between the cards to create an opening so air can circulate into the fan area of the cards.
- Change your username to something more akin to your level of intelligence.
- Mining stresses the GPU a lot so high temperatures are to be expected. It is always recommended to enable manual fan control and increasing speed to 60-70%. You might need higher speeds if you have a shitty case.
- If the noise from the increased fan speeds bothers you do not make a post about it, we don't give a damn. Solve that by putting on your headphones and crank the volume up on the Justin Beaver album you've been listening for the past few weeks.

WoW!!! Somthing is really wrong with my new rig i have just build!!!
I just finished building my new PC (not just a mining rig) and i am now testing the abilities of the hardware.
My hardware:
Cooler Master HAF 932 case
AMD CPU phenom X4 955 3.7Ghz o.c
Crucial DDR3 1600 2x4GB
Asus crosshair IV formula Motherboard
x2 HIS Radeon HD 6970 crossfire
Air cooling

I am using the Phoenix miner with flags:
-k phatk DEVICE=0 VECTORS AGGRESSION=8 WORKSIZE=128 BFI_INT

My 6970's are NOT overclocked and still on stock clocks of 880/1375  voltage 1.175

And I am getting 365 Mhash/s (each GPU) BUT... wait for it......  My temps are 91C !!!  I can boil an egg on my cards !  Sad

I've been searching so much on other posts and i've never found people with such high temps.
Why is this happaning to me?   Huh  Is something wrong with my setup?  Or maybe the temperatures supposed to be that high?!?

Yes, I am sure that you will get better performance when mining if you disable crossfire.

Crossfiring = 1 cable going from card to card and an on/off switch in the settings. Nothing to lose sleep over. Play with it when you get them and see what works best.

Search this forum for posts mentioning the same brand/model card as the ones you're looking at and see what they're doing.

What OS are you going to run?
For sure am going to play a bit with the cards and see whats best... :-)

As for now, I am going to have a x2 HIS Radeon HD 6970 (Crossfire OR not) working on a Windows7 OS.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Yes you can crossfire two cards from different brands, but you don't need to for mining.

The cards should perform better if you don't crossfire them.

Be wary about the XFX cards, they are the cards I detest in my mining rigs. My XFX 5850s run much hotter than other brands I have and they were the worst when it came to overclocking. My asus and sapphire cards perform the best. Not sure about HIS, never had one.

Oh, thanks for the info.
Good to know they will work fine on crossfire but are you sure it will be better NOT to crossfire them? Also for gaming purpose?

The ati 6990 will be back in stock at the end of july.  If you order from excaliburPC, they have gotten them to me the fastest.  I have built 4 computers this month with the ati 6990s in them.  I recommend for bitcoins and the way this difficulty is going up, get an XFX 6990, hit the overclock switch, which XFX IS THE BRAND YOU WANT BECAUSE THEY WARRANTY YOUR CARD WITH THE OVERCLOCK SWITCH FLIPPED to turbo mode.  I get a constant 900 hash with one and 1750 with two of them in quadfire.  You need a really good case and some really good fans to keep them cool, my cards on all the builds stayed in the 85 range running full out.  I couldnt believe this crap, its like running a furmark stress test on them 24/7 lol.

You can get the XFX for 730 bux, just order it and they will send it ASAP.  They have been pretty fast within a week or two for all my ati 6990s I have ordered from them.  Ebay wants 1000 to 1200 for one, which they are not worth that at all.  730 is a perfect price point for them.  You wont be dissapointed, but go with XFX for the warranty running them this hard for mining.

BY THE WAY, NEWBIE for posting but have been reading the forums for a month or so.  Great place. love bitcoins. so HI..
Hey Fellow NEWBIE...  Smiley

Thanks For The Info.
I Will Go Check Them Out. (excaliburPC)

I Must Say That You Guys Persuaded Me And That Now I Am Looking To Buy A "Single-Core" Graphic Card.
So, Please Recommend Me Of A Card You Think Will Have The Best Performance For My Mining/Gaming rig.
I Decided Not To Go For The 6990 Because Of Its High Price / Unavailability / Heat Problems.

I Am Planing On Buy x2 (Or Even x3) Cards And Apply Crossfire Between Them.

What Is The Second Best Card You Recommend Smiley ? Maybe The 6970?

Thanks

Try the marketplace theres a few people selling it there...
Sorry for my "newbizem" but where is that marketplace?

Can anyone look and see if the "MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3 AMD 890FX" Motherboard and the "XFX ATI Radeon HD 5970 (black edition)" are (PCIe - slots) compatible?
Thous are probably the one's i will buy (it depends on what you will answer me).

Thank you so much for your help.

God damn!!  928$ for the 5970 in here: http://www.scan.co.uk/products/4gb-gigabyte-hd-6990-pci-e-21-(x16)-5000mhz-gddr5-gpu-830mhz-3072-cores-dl-dvi-i-4x-mini-dp

You could also always opt in for a pair of 5870's lower hash rate but way cheaper then those two. Also Longer you wait less BTC you'll generate as the difficulty keeps going up.
I prefer to wait a few days and see if i can find my wish card rather then be stuck with a poor graphic card....   Wink   Grin

what about a real good motherboard that supports PCIe 2.1 (I need three 2.1 slots for the crossfire graphic cards)? any suggestions?

why don't you go for 5970's instead? similar hash rate and less power consumption.
Actually that's what i was thinking too... but i wasn't sure about it.

But (again), why is the 5970's price is so high? It's price almost the same as the 6990...   Shocked

Do you know when will there be 6990's at stock?  Huh  Maybe I should wait a few weeks?!?!

Hi, these are the slots you should be interested in:

3x PCI-Express 2.0 x16, ignore the x8 and the othe PCI slots.

It basically means you can have up to 3 graphics cards connected to your Motherboard. Your new graphics card will be compatible with any motherboard as long as these PCI-Express 2.0 x16 slots are present.

Keep in mind you will also need a high quality power supply for your computer (750W or more), since these high-end cards require:
1. To be connected to motherboard
2. Have 2 "PCI-E Cables" connected from the Power Supply to your card.

Good luck!
Thanks for replying.

But are you sure the "Gigabyte Radeon HD 6990 4GB" Graphics Card slot is: PCI-Express 2.0 x16 ??
Because i've seen on ebay
something about "Host Interface:   PCI Express 2.1 x16"..... so? which is right?

I'm looking to buy an "Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 6990 (GV-R699D5-4GD-B) 4096MB PCIe x16 Gen 2.1 Eyefinity 6 Edition"
and i can't find anywhere to buy from (OUT OF STOCK).
Perhaps I should go and buy the ATI Radeon HD 5970? Would that give me the same (+/-) Mhash/sec?
+
I'm new to builing a computer - DIY and I was wondering if an "ASUS Socket AM3/AMD 890FX/CrossFireX/SATA 3.0 and USB 3.0/A and GbE/ATX Motherboard Crosshair IV Formula" motherboard is compatible for the 6990 graphic card (I don't really understand the differences between PCI-Express 2.1 x16 And PCI--Express 2.0....etc.).
http://www.amazon.com/CrossFireX-Motherboard-Crosshair-IV-Formula/dp/B003G40Z66/ref=sr_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1308690889&sr=1-7

tell me what you think? If not compatible so please refer me to any other motherboard that you recommand (for x3 6990's graphic cards crossfire).

thanks

I'd probably pick the top rig, because you can always expand by throwing in a second card. You can't do that on the bottom rig.
Why not?
Can't i buy later on another 6970?
Are you using these solely for mining or as a regular PC too?

I would also go with the first one, heres why:

The 6990 card alone can do the same as the 2 6970s in terms of Mhash/s (give a few tweaks here and there). Also powering one device as apposed to w will be less heat/power consumption. You also have the option of getting another 6990 later on if you want to add into it.

My only issue with both machines are they seem a tad expensive. If they are just miners then you can probably cut down on the motherboards and CPUs - ie not get such fancy ones and save some cash.
I agree! But to tell you the truth... Smiley the only reason why i've writen the 6970 in my rig alternative specification is because i've been looking all around the internet and i cant find an "internet shop" that sell the 6990.  Apparently all 6990's are "OUT OF STOCK"...  Shocked   Do you know where can i find one (or even two)?

Thank you all for replying so quickly.

Q: Your recommendation for a new video card?
by

on 18/06/2011, 15:49:23 UTC
Hey, I am new to the mining consept and i am very much enthusiast about it.

Right now my computer specs aren't really good and i am trying to make the best out of them.

I have an Alienware m15x notebook with: i7 740QM and a iGPU-> Nvidia GTX 460M 1.5GB (Not so much that i can do with it  Undecided )

nevertheless, I am researching for an eGPU upgrade to my system but right now i am having trouble understanding what i need to buy and if my specific laptop can use a eGPU.
basically what i want to do is buying a new desktop video card and assemble it to my notebook as an external card.

Can you help me understand what i need to accomplish that and if you can also recommend me of a good ( \best) video card to buy.

Thank you

Code:
@echo offc:cd \phoenixstart "MINER_1" /LOW /affinity 1 phoenix.exe -u http://NAME@MINER:PASSWORD@btcmine.com:8332/ -q 6 –k phatk AGGRESSION=4 WORKSIZE=128 BFI_INT VECTORS DEVICE=0

Code:
phoenix -u http://NAME.MINER:PASSWORD@api.bitcoin.cz:8332/ -k poclbm DEVICE=0 VECTORS AGGRESSION=3
http://img683.imageshack.us/img683/6927/pheonixz.jpg
23.35 Mhash/sec
