Bitcoin Memes with Satoshi Rewards
by
Ericgw
on 23/05/2021, 20:05:02 UTC
I recently launched a meme platform, and decided to host a Bitcoin meme competition this week, with a 1million Satoshi prize pool.

It’s primarily a fun project and every couple weeks there’s a new theme. Meme with the most upvotes wins, and I’ve given away about 10k total prizes so far Smiley

I’m in the middle of launching like a YouTube style payment/reward system for content producers on the site, and I’m designing a way to tie it in with automatic lightning payments based on which persons Memes are Best received and engaged with by the community.

Posting here because some help would be really appreciated by anyone here in the community, spreading the word, posting good content, helping with technical items, all that would be awesome!

If I pull this off well enough, I think I can help expose a lot of people to bitcoin payments in a big way. I’m thinking to use Satoshi’s as the primary currency on the site, to make a point and to educate people.

The website is https://meme.market

I am definitely an interested  Grin

I create graphics and 3D designs, if you need some small work done.  Send me a PM with some specifics.

Right on :-)

Would you be up for doing some 2D comic book style graphics?  If yes, can you help me understand what sort of budget I should put together for this, ie: a per issue budget?

Do you have a link you can send me for reference of some stuff you’ve done?

I considered doing the same but, concerned the big 3 would crush it, just like they did the Tucker.   Smiley Smiley  But, best of luck

What happened with the Tucker?

Feel like contributing anything to the writing or do you feel it’s a bit too risky to be involved?

I'm starting up and self financing a new bitcoin comic book since this one seems to have gone dormant with new releases.

Anyone interested?

Interested.

What do you gave in mind? Gofundme ? Kickstarter?

I'd like to start by self funding a creative design team to establish the comic book universe and characters setting and essentially develop an MVP and first issue draft.  From there I will be better able to asses future costs and implications and decide next steps.

Things like:

- Bitcoin as a super power ring people put on to get bitcoin super powers, government attacks: caveman with spear jumping out randomly, spear breaks, caveman retreats, bitcoin guy wonders if a mosquito bit
- The world gets plagued by dreams of kittens taking over the world (crypto kitties) so bitcoin guy/girl takes action to prepare for the kitty apocalypse
- Bitcoin guy walks down the street and people call him stupid (not mentioning anyone at JP Morgan lol) and comic discussion ensues
- Asian dictator (not mentioning anyone in Korea lol) threatens X and Monero guy/girl comes to the rescue
- Tidal wave comes and disables large banking building from a "Ripple" in the fabric of Financial (financial could be a physical island where scientists are doing experiments which accidentally create a tidal wave knocking out power for a group of banking leaders) etc

Pushing air into the room is more effective & efficient than trying to exhaust it. Give it a try both ways and take temperature readings, youll be surprised. Good luck!

I am considering placing my 4 x L3's in my garage to assist with cooling and air movement.  I live in the Northern hemisphere and my garage in between the sun and my house so usually in the shade.

I am wondering about humidity, dust and -30* temperatures, as humidity, dust levels and temperature changes outside, how much of an effect will this have on the units?

Also If I use an air intake approach, I am concerned about intaking snow and/or rain, anyone have experience with the above?

Reading this thread and searching on line as well, I also seem unable to locate the specifics of how much heat each unit produces

I have 4 L3's on the way right now and my intention is to look at a small farm in the approx 100qty range in the next 6 months, part of the research is to calculate heat output and cooling requirements

Does anyone know if heat output has been tested or of a resource where data of this type is posted?

Re: Modeling the Prices of Cryptocurrencies
by

Thanks for the replies, Calhil, Queen and genco. All good points/suggestions. I suppose it would have been useful for me to describe what I was hoping to accomplish from this. My goal was to monitor the overall crypto-market. You can take a quick look at this market here: http://coinmarketcap.com/

Basically, my goal was taking each of these 100 currencies (which is cross-sectional data) and monitoring their behavior over time (longitudinal or time-series data). Combined, we have ourselves a nice panel data set (both cross-sectional and time-series) across cryptocurrencies.

I'd prefer to have a multitude of variables. But, the one's at my disposal are: Price, 24 Hour Volume, and Supply. I can obviously create change variables (such as change in price, change in volume and change in supply).

So, take the historical panel data (over time, across the 100 crypto-currencies), create a model based on those variables (maybe change in price is a function of change in volume and change in supply) and obtain regression results. After we get the results, we can then use those coefficients to forecast each crypto-currency's daily change.

This could be used to pick and choose where you want to place your btc. Maybe today, the model tells me megacoin should yield the best price change. Tomorrow it says doge.

That sort of thing. THanks again for you comments and I'm still interested in your feedback now that I've filled in a bit more info....

Been some time since the last post on this topic.  Have you continued the project?

Hello everyone,

And that most people do not factor in other important expenses such as:
3.  Replacing machine in approx 12 months when newer technology and mining difficulty increases make it redundant

More like 2 years RIGHT NOW, and ballpark 4-6 years AT WORST after that.

The days of "new miner tech with major upgrade in efficiency every 6-10 months" DIED when the S9 was released on the CURRENT STATE OF THE ART SEMICONDUCTOR PROCESS NODE.

Mining now has to wait for NEW nodes to see significantly higher efficiency, just like the rest of the semiconductor world.

Labor? If you can't run 30 machines yourself, you shouldn't be running a farm.
Takes me perhaps an hour MAX per day to keep my farm up - and I'm IN that ballpark on rigs.

Per sidehacks comments about voltage adjustability - pretty much died with the Spondoolies SP20, when almost everyone finally followed BitFury's lead into "string" designs to drop the cost of the miner (at the cost of adjustability).
IN THEORY it's possible to run a string off of a buck, but I don't know if anyone current other than Innosilicon does so (and I'm not sure if THEY do so in the A4 or A5 or upcomming A4+).

Great info, thank you very much Smiley

To open source or stay private? Predictive models, simulation testing and more
by

Hello Smiley

I've been working with my dev's in developing some algo's in the attempt of identifying historical news/activity patterns which precede price increases.  I am developing a simulation system which would be used for testing the algo's before using them live.

So far I have been funding the operation myself.  I thought to get some good traction and then go to public/group discussions for further development and to explore opportunities.  I have been considering changing the approach to be more public and group/community oriented up front.

I've done about $15k in R&D so far and overall things seem to be on the right track.

This being said, I wonder just how much faster and deeper this would move with community support.  I have not done a community project before though and although I have a solid enough business, marketing and team coordination background I am not a developer or economist by any means.  I have developed a number of smaller applications and softwares for one of my other companies and thoroughly enjoy the development process, coordinating the team, testing and communicating the vision and seeing it all completed.

I thought to post this topic to see what input, suggestions, interest or other discussions this may stimulate.

Looking forward to finding out!

Which rig to setup and which coins to mine?
by
Ericgw
on 03/10/2017, 20:59:05 UTC
Hello Smiley

I am interested in setting up a mid sized mining operation at the moment.  I have location picked for now and now I am researching which rigs and coins to work with.

When I do my analysis it seems that for a hobby, a number of miners are ok.  But as a real business it is much more difficult.  It seems many people do not factor in the total sum of expenses other than electricity such as:

-  Rig depreciation (it seems budgeting for a new machine every 12 months is realistic, would you agree or no?)
-  Maintenance/Repairs and downtime
-  Location costs for storage of equipment
-  Labour costs for maintenance, monitoring which coins to mine, security etc
-  Mining difficulty increases

What sort of income statement financials have you put together?

Would you recommend custom designing my own rig or using off the shelf?

If custom, do you know who I could contact for this?

Any other good experience you have would be great to hear!

Thank you Smiley

Custom mining rigs and profitability of mining
by
Ericgw
on 02/10/2017, 22:57:13 UTC
Hello everyone,

I am new to mining and have noticed from various threads that it seems difficult to generate a profit unless there is a very specific advantage to the mining farm.  I am now doing research to figure out how best to make a custom rig to be ahead of the curve.  Anyone have good experience with this??

It seems that many people factor in the common expenses such as:
1.  Cost of machine
2.  Electricity

And that most people do not factor in other important expenses such as:
3.  Replacing machine in approx 12 months when newer technology and mining difficulty increases make it redundant
4.  Late arrival of equipment; if the 'newest best rig' doesn't arrive until after 6 months then only approx 6 months remain of profitability instead of 12
5.  Mining difficulty increases effect on profit over time, decreasing on-going
6.  Management of equipment and facility  (time is $$$)
7.  Security (time is $$$)
8.  Storage of equipment (if not running in your basement at home that is)

With the expenses 3-8 above factored in, mining profitably seems difficult.  It leads me to researching how to engineer a custom rig to give me an advantage.

Has anyone done something like this before??

If you're wanting to build your own miners for BTC, you're either gonna have to go to an existing manufacturer like Bitfury with at least $1M for an order of their ASICs, or come to an existing IC developer with about $10M (and around six months) to run you out your own custom design. Unfortunately the only "realistic" course - unless you have a whole lot of money you're willing to risk losing entirely - is to buy existing miners from someone else.

Interesting, ok great feedback thank you.

I'm not opposed to these options so long as profitability looks reasonably positive.  I would prefer though to star with a smaller operation to test things out first, which leads to the "buy existing miners" option, however each time I do profit/loss analysis I seem to come up negative due to the reasons I listed above for this topic.

Have you purchased some existing miners before and came out profitable despite the list of expense items I listed above?
Of course. We are not doing this just for kicks... Currently running 240THs on Kano and that is good for around 2BTC/month.

No matter what coin you are mining it all boils down to just 3 things:
1.Cost of your electricity.
2 & 3.Cost of what it takes to deal with the heat and noise.

As long as income exceeds cost of those 3 things - mine on.

Thank you for helping, I'm grateful to be chatting with people actually doing mining Smiley

Have you found that you were able to remain profitable regardless of mining difficulty increases?

How long have you found your rigs remain profitable before they are surpassed by superior technology?  6mths?  12mths?  More?  Less?

Have you factored in labour time requirements for this or has this not been physically included in the expenses section of COGS?

It's still technically possible, but not if you're building with off-the-shelf parts.

Ok thanks guys.

I'll post in the alt's section for non bitcoin related rigs.

Keeping on subject with bitcoin related rigs though, my interest is still present.  I'm trying to discern what size and scope of a farm is required in order to be profitable at this point in the game.  I'm doing research into geographic location for spacing/labour/electrical costs/taxation, recruiting a team to develop custom rigs and generally trying to peg down a realistic income statement draft and up front costs requirement budget.

Has anyone gone through this process either theoretically or with your own farm(s)??
