I'd like to thank yours in advance for all responses and perspectives, and I've reached a conclusion.

Quantum computers are a problem for the future, but currently, they're not yet a real problem. Most quantum computers are built to perform extremely specific tasks and are extremely expensive, which, at least for now, discourages any attempted attack. Of course, we'll eventually have to upgrade the network, and that will be a major challenge, but it's not a problem for today.

Quantum Computing and Satoshi's Bitcoins

Hello everyone,

I know this topic has probably appeared here more times than we would like to count, and I apologize if I am opening another repeated thread, but it is a question that intrigues me and I would like to hear the opinion of the more experienced community.

With the advances in quantum computing and the potential risk that algorithms like ECDSA could eventually be broken, what do you think should be done about old addresses, especially Satoshi's?

Most of his Bitcoins are still in P2PK addresses, that is, vulnerable if someone manages to derive the private key from the public key.

The big question is:
When (or if) this becomes feasible, will the community consider any movement as valid? Or will there be a consensus that, in these cases, it is better to update the protocol and invalidate this type of "quantum theft"?

Or even: would it be better to simply let history take its course, even if that means seeing these BTC being moved?

On the other hand, I think Satoshi was smart, because he left a kind of "canary on top of a bomb" to warn us about the security of the network.

I would like to know your honest opinion and what you think will happen.

Thank you in advance, and again, I apologize if I revived again this discussion.

Anything about address migration for countering quantum computer? Are we waiting 2030?
No. For that you need to follow the BIP repository and the developer mailing list. Quantum resistance research is still in progress and it is unlikely that an implementation will be available or merged very soon.

Excuse my ignorance, what is the BIP about quantum research? And how can I stay up to date on this topic?

I really love Nostr (and even more so because it was developed by a fellow countryman, the so-called fiatjaf). It's really cool to see that it has reached Bitcoin Talk

A Bitcoin Talk community could even be created on Nostr. It would be really cool to see the opinions of people on Bitcoin Talk in a relaxed way

More Bitcointalkers should use Nostr. It can be like a second group channel instead of the forum's unofficial Discord.

Also endorsing Hivetalk (https://www.hivetalk.org) (the videoconf/screenshare webapp)

and check out https://www.nostrapps.com !

Good stuff a-plenty in there too. Use a decent extension for signing your events like nos2x and a whole new internet opens up  Grin

That's very cool. Personally, this caught my attention: https://nostrapps.com/plebeian-market but it seems that this service is still under development.
