Re: Scan QR code of paper wallet?

Any updates on how this worked for you if you've tried it yet? It'd be useful to find if you had any issues using it (or if you just waited for your webcam to arrive).

Hello I forgot to give a update. I first tried to use Electrum, but it couldn't handle BIP38. So I used Mycelium (Android) instead. I made all transfers with Myceliym including the transfer to the new addresses. The phone was connected to the internet the whole time, but I never reuse paper wallet addresses and the old are empty now.

The new addresses are generated with a air-gapped PC and the paper is folded so I don't accidental take any pictures of my private key, but it's easy enough to scan the public key.

I know it's not the most secure way but it got the job done, I mean now when my BTC is at my new addresses it should be aright now?

Thanks for the help Jackg!

jackg, thanks. Yes but from what I could understand, it's more important to have a long password than special characters. It's better to remember a long sentence (a uncommon sentence, just jibberish).

The difficulty will be incremental by every added character, it's easier to remember a long sentence, the password example I gave is a 88 char password. It will take a couple of quadragintillion years to crack.

From my understanding, the length of the password is crucial, when talking crack/brute force time.

Example :

"The dog took me for a walk two times today. But I couldn't see the bird behind the tree"

Thanks, but it's not working (error: The Blockchain.info API is down or not working correctly. So thats why all addresses show zero balance.). Any alternative?

Hello!

I want to track multiple watch addresses for my transactions, but I can't find a block explorer that support that.

What should I use?

Thanks!

@jackg - I have ordered a webcam for future paper wallets, so I can use that on my air-gapped machine.

Yes I'm considering using Electrum or Mycelium for android, for moving coins between paper wallets, just to make the process a bit easier.

I would say that Electrum seems a bit more secure than Mycelium, because Electrum uses SPV validation and Mycelium uses central validation.

I still need to trust the trusted list from Electrum nodes (SPV).

Re: Is bitaddress still considered safe?

Probably, if you downloaded it from a trusted source or you verified it yourself. I'm not aware of any vulnerability affecting it as of now.
Ok, thanks!

You can actually just use the same address for both Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash, they are generated the same way and they do have replay protection. If you want to move it, I would suggest for you to decrypt it using bitaddress and import it into Electrum. You might want to do it in an airgapped condition if you want the maximum security
Ah, can I use my android phone for this? Electrum seems to have a android app, do you recommend Electrum instead of Mycelium?

What do you mean? The Mycelium cold storage function should be fairly safe, and you can use it without problem though it is not the most secure as compared to an airgapped Electrum.
Well I thought it would be easier just to use a old phone to move the funds between paper wallets, but it's maybe secure enough? The process for signing offline transactions seems quite difficult, I'm afraid of doing something wrong, want a quite straight forward process.

I will still generate the new private addresses on a air-gapped machine, but the move is going to be pretty "hot" with a android phone and Mycelium or Electrum.

Is bitaddress still considered safe?
by
Frosten

Hello!

Three questions:

1. My old (2-3y) paper wallets are generated with bitaddress.org, is it still considered safe? I use it on a Air-Gapped PC with ubuntu live usb stick.

2. I'm going to move funds from paperwallets (pre segwith), so I have also Bitcoin cash. Going to move it to other paper wallets. How should I move it? I guess I also need a paperwallet for my Bitcoin Cash?

3. A reserve android phone with Mycelium app installed is very temping, I can scan the private QR code and scan the receive address of the new wallet and move it?

Thanks

copy private key and send it to your facebook messages
Copy paste on computer from facebook private keys.

Are you kidding me? I have no control over the data sent through facebook or messenger. Sending private keys through services you don't control is not a great idea.

I'm looking for a secure and open source qr-code reader for android, one that don't collect data, hopefully one that can send the information through a USB cable, don't really know how yet. Maybe I need to order a webcam...

Scan QR code of paper wallet?
by
Frosten
on 05/09/2017, 22:41:12 UTC
Hello!

a few questions. I don't have a webcam.

1. I'm planning to move my paper wallets to new wallets. I have a offline computer, can I some way use a old phone as a qr-scanner and import it, if the phone has no internet connection and is reset? Or do I need to type the private key manually for all the paper wallets?

Sometimes I want to scan the paper wallet to a offline air-gapped machine and import the BIP38 key and double check that it's encrypted with the correct key. But it's getting old pretty quick to manually enter the keys.

2. Would it be possible/safe to use The android Bitcoin wallet to import the old paper wallet and then move coins to a new paper wallet with my android wallet? It's encrypted BIP38.

I hope I make any sense! I appreciate any help.

I guess FUD about august 1 is finally taking effect. There will be more of this as august 1 draws near. The upside is we can buy cheaper coins during this panic dump. And for long time holders, just hold on.

So maybe I should be cold and wait to buy more? I don't have a infinite supply of FIAT Cheesy Maybe it will drop more the closer it gets to Aug 1.

It is not the new thing here. Bitcoin price is volatile it kept on changing up and down, I agree it is the time to buy more coins because price is low now. A big increase in the price of bitcoin is expected in the near future.

But wont investors be more nervous the closer it gets to Segwit? Wouldn't that theoretical have a bigger impact?

Just guessing, the hard fork take over last time had a big impact from what I can remember.

I think this is just normal of Bitcoin.  The other week bitcoin was at this price then it goes up and goes back to this price again.  This is what we called high volatility.  Wild fluctuation that attracted lots of day traders since they can book big profit from this price changes.  I am surprised that OP is still surprise about this kind of price changes in Bitcoin.  And about ETH it goes down because it should since ETH had form a bubble and seems this bubble burst.

Yeah, well I'm not very active any more. I try to read up on the market when I have money to invest. Everything I have in BTC is very long term.

I have two roads
1. Buy now
2. Wait and see if the Segwit will have any impact

Why, how would Segwit have any effect on the price, I mean in the downtrend ? Usually this is the inverse, as hype feeds the rises.

The old hard fork battle, which caused a major vote if I remember correctly caused a lot of drama and a big drop in price, but that was some time ago now, maybe 1-2 years ago.

If you think that the price of all the major coins are going down is a good thing so that you could accumulate more coins, good luck with that idea, i do expect this to be a regular procedure after any major rally, the market just corrected itself. You might see a rally in BTC in the coming months.

So your idea is that I should buy more coins on a high, not when it's low? That's not what I have been doing the last 4 years.

What do you mean by rally? Do you mean fluctuations in price? Why do you think it will be more tense?

When will Segwit be decided, are there a lot of drama because of it? I have been gone for a while Smiley.

Thanks
