So I guess my refund request wasn't part of that majority.

I also assume there's no way to find out whether or not my refund request was received properly.

I never got any email telling me it was rejected or accepted and  never got a refund(16 chips in batch 5).

This is the only time during this whole clusterfuck that I've been concerned.  Undecided

Edit: I woke up this morning and found that my refund had been processed over night. Thanks, SB.

I'm checking the forums daily in hope of good news, this chip business is really really upsetting.  How long before we won't make roi?  /sadface

Personally, I no longer expect to make roi. I hope I'm wrong, but at this rate...

This was a risky proposition from the start so hopefully nobody invested more than they can afford to lose.

I just registered and paid for my order through the website, but im a little confused on the shipping.  I wanted it shipped, but it seems like its labeled as hosted.  There wasnt another option for shipped. am i ok?

+1 same concern. Not going through with checkout until this is clarified.

If we choose the hosting option, what are the terms or requirements to get the miners back later? E.g., say I purchase a miner now and elect to have it hosted. What happens if I later want the miner delivered to me? Is there a min/max hosting period? Are there any costs other than the ongoing 8% + electricity costs?

I asked the same question a few pages back and steamboat's answer was that the miners are ours to do with as we wish. He will ship them wherever we want as long as we pay the shipping costs. I don't believe there are any further charges once mining has commenced.

I think there is a one time setup fee though. SB was trying to avoid it but for some reason couldn't.

I'm poking around looking for case/housing options for these miners.  What are the anticipated final dimensions of one fully assembled unit, please?  If the unit is stored in a case, would the bottom standoffs still be necessary? (i.e., do they serve some purpose other than providing spacing between stacked units?)

I believe the K16 is 10cm X 10cm but its height is variable(heatsink!).

Here's the Klondike discussion thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=190731
And here's the github: https://github.com/bkkcoins/klondike

If you're not stacking them then the standoffs will probably attach directly to the case. Think about the standoffs on a regular computer motherboard that attach it to its case; same idea. The bottom standoffs keep the uneven surface of the assembled PCB from just sitting there on the bottom of the case.

I'm thinking about just making a case out of plexi when the time comes. It'll be cheap and easy and it'll look neat.

I'm currently looking at running just a single K16. Has anyone given any thought to using a wall wart with a Molex connector (e.g. http://amzn.com/B002TJNDU4) and running it through a molex-->pcie adapter? Are there any reasons why that wouldn't work? I would love not to have a large, exposed power supply if I don't have to.

I've been toying with the idea of doing something like this. I want to use a wall wart to power my RPi and my single K16. It should be possible(and less noisy than an ATX PSU).

That wall wart you linked to puts out 12 V, which is fine for a K16(iirc), but the RPi needs 5 V. An LM7805 or similar would do the job.

Using that same wall wart to power a USB hub should also be possible, but I only have the one K16 so I'm not going to bother with a hub

Anyone interested in working on a cut paste diy manual that we can all edit?

What about a wiki?

Thanks a bunch for starting this thread, super helpful.

I might be interested depending on how much it would cost to get them assembled into a working PCB.

  • Klondike K16 mining unit: Utilizes 16 ASIC chips to produce 4.5gh/s per unit.
    • Assembly: Includes assembly of ASICs, PCB based on the Klondike K16 design, and necessary PCB components.

    • Full kit: Includes the assembly service and a DIY kit which includes: heat sink, standoffs, fan, screws, thermal paste, and USB cable.

    • Fully assembled unit: Includes assembly of one Klondike K16 ASIC board and all DIY kit parts fully assembled.
Do any of these assembly options require the buyer to solder any SMT components?
It looks like the Assembly does but the other options do not, correct?

I tried reflow soldering SMT components in college once. Never again.

Fully Assembled Unit:
The fully assembled unit, including all necessary hardware, is $133.5, to be paid in BTC.

Does this price reflect per 16 chip unit?  Or per any amount of chipped unit?

You have to have your own chips or have participated in one of the group buys on this thread. That price is only for assembly with YOUR chips.

I understand you have to buy the chips now and pay for shipping and assembly later.

My question is do I pay $133.5 for each 16 board chip?  I.E. If I buy 64 chips and want them all assembled will it cost me $133.5 X 4?

Thanks

If I understand correctly then Yes.

That $133.50 is the cost of parts(except the ASICs) and assembly of a single K16. You buy the chips now. Once all the orders are in, Steamboat will email those that need to pay for additional services(shipping, assembly, testing, hosting)

Joined the forums just so I could get in on this.

Ordered my 16 and I'll order 18 more next week when I get funded.

So pumped. Thanks a ton for organizing this, steamboat.

Here's why this rule is useless. I had my first five posts within 20 minutes or so. And it's easy with the 4 hour thing too... If you're using Firefox, download an extension called ReloadEvery and install it. Log in to your account on this forum and enable ReloadEvery to reload every 30 seconds or 1 minute. Make sure your computer won't go to sleep or shut down in the next 4 hours and go about your business. When you return in 4 hours you should be all set!
Good point. Maybe we should go with a payment system to use these forums?

There is a much deep reason for this rule. The meaning of which would fill volumes in explanation.

As a newb, I still don't know the reason. Can you enlighten me? Or at least post a link to a page that explains the reasoning behind this rule?

steamboat has a thread atm with chips and assembly of klondike 16 boards

Can you please post a link?

but you need to read if you want to learn

just like IEEE Cheesy

Speaking of the importance of reading for those that want to learn: In my OP, I already included the link to steamboat's thread. ;-)

Funny thing is, all those chips will probably be sold before I get out of newb jail.

I came here primarily because I want to get into mining. The grand plan right now is to get in on a group buy of ASIC mining units. Preferably something already assembled because, despite my recent aqcuisition of a degree in electrical engineering, I have no idea how I would go about getting a bunch of SMT mining chips assembled onto actual PCBs.

So my questions are really about group buys.

How I get involved is fairly obvious, if they're at all like this one, so I'm not too concerned about that. The instructions are clear enough so I probably wont get my dick caught in the fan.

Question: How do you find group buys to get involved in? It seems like a waste of time to read through every thread in the custom hardware subforum. Or is it?

If I had known that I needed to browse for four hours aside from posting five comments, I would've signed up sooner. I've been browsing for two to three hours now.. *smh* .. I doubt it's possible to get credited for that time. Anywho..

Welcome to the center of the Bitcoin Galaxy!  Grin

This is true, but sad. I've been using bitcoin for a while but I haven't registered here because I just can't stand using forums. I hate having to read every post in a thread when most of the posts are chaff that should just be downvoted to oblivion(sorry for the redditism).

Useless/unrelated posts in a thread appear in line with useful and contributory posts. Displaying "good" and "bad" posts in the same way like this encourages side discussions unrelated to the original topic wherein people try to correct or argue with the people that make the "bad" posts.

The result is hundreds(in some cases) of pages of comments that may or may not be pertinent to whatever it is you're looking for. Unfortunately, the only way to figure out which of those comments are pertinent and which are not is by reading through hundreds of pages of them!

I would prefer a layout that facilitated the inevitable spawning of side-discussions and allows the most useful/relevant comments in those side-discussions to be provided more visual weight.

It's a shame u don't understand why there are 5 post newb restrictions put in place.

Long story short, we all had to deal with them for a good reason.  If it were up to me the post count would go up.

+1

I'd personally make it twenty posts, and twenty-four hours.

Back on topic: Yes, most newbies have no idea why that's there, and if they could see, the answer is already in the Newbie section.

Same I think it is way too lenient. People still complain, it's hilarious. I remember just reading some stickies and asking some questions I was curious about. I still do that today actually lol.

I love it!! Grin

What they don't know is that the Newbie section might be one of the best boards, since there's not a lot of scammers or nonsense.

Are you sure? The front page of the newbie board currently has several "free bitcoin" threads going. Granted, some of them might be legit, but I have trouble believing that there are people that will come to the newbie board and just hand out money.

But what do I know? It's my first post here in newbie prison.
