I've setup an offline wallet at home in a VM with no networkcards. I have a few bitcoins in that VM and when I'm at home I transfer an unsigned transaction to the VM, have it signed, and use that transaction. This is usually good for small transactions when buying pizza or stuff. A few weeks ago, the bitcoin price changed and while I was on the road, I actually had want to sell a few bitcoins, but this was impossible since my coins were very very safe at home.

So i'm wondering how you all use this in a practical way. I usually kept for like 100 US dollar bitcoin in an online wallet for small payments. But if there is a big price change, I would like to be able to respond faster and not rely on my very safe offline VM. And I of course don't want to store too much money in an online account.

Any tips?

Daar ben ik nu ook heel erg over aan t denken. Alles is op dit moment verliesgevend en dan gok ik liever nog op iets moois in 2015 / 2016 / 2017 dan nu met veel verlies uitstappen. Zelfs als bitcoin totaal zou verdwijnen.

Zit beetje met een dilemma. Ik ben ingestapt in bitcoins toen de koers nog lekker omhoog schoot (dec2013) en heb nu een paar BTC. Maar de daling afgelopen jaar hakt er natuurlijk flink in. Pas bij een koers van 670 euro speel ik "quitte". Nu zou ik toch ook graag zo nu en dan een klein bedrag met BTC betalen, gewoon om het doen. Maar eigenlijk ben ik dan beetje dief van mijn eigen portemonnaie.

Hoe gaan jullie er mee om? Toch maar kleine bedragen uitgeven? Of nu nog weer bijkopen, maar dat vind ik ook wel tricky gezien het feit dat de koers altijd NOG lager kan :-)

While trying to sign a transaction on my offline system, I couldn't figure out why the damn thing didn't get signed. Turned out a wrong password. Would be great if Electrum would mention this after entering :-)

Sorry, verkeerd gebruik van de terminologie :-)
Ik had ook mijn hele wallet in de backup, maar daar ging dus iets fout. Door uit de niet gesyncte wallet de private key op te vissen en die in een nieuwe bitcoin client te gooien, kon ik gelukkig weer de bitcoins zien.

Na veel zoeken ben ik erachter gekomen dat de fout tussen keyboard en stoel zat. Ik heb een TrueCrypt container waar mijn wallet in staat. En op mijn laptop leek die gewoon up to date. Gisteravond een pc erbij gepakt die ik al even niet meer gebruikt heb en voila, daar stond een versie op van 25 feb. Mijn 2BTC is dus weer terug.

Dit akkefietje heeft mij iig wel weer wat meer geleerd over het gebruik van Bitcoins, want ik dacht dat ik 1 private key had vanwaar uit al die andere public keys voor transacties worden gegenereerd. Die heb ik netjes geprint en opgeslagen. Maar nu heb ik dus geleerd dat elke transactie weer een private key maakt die ik ook moet bewaren.

Your post helped my recovery my lost BTC too. By looking in the debug logs I discovered on what date I made the transaction and on what computer. I could now retrieve a functional backup. Thanks!

I must admit I today discovered it was my own fault. I'm using TrueCrypt to store my wallet in. And that TrueCrypt container is placed in a dropbox-like synced folder. Somehow changes hadn't been correctly synced and I was able to restore a copy of the container from the date I bought the BTC. And there was my private key. I cried a little :-) But my 2 BTC are back.

Well, I'm also considering moving away from MultiBit. But I'm wondering, are all my transactions I ever made, connected to my private keys? So if I import my private keys into a different app, I will still get my old transactions back?

Have a similar issue here. Although it might also be MY fault by not saving things or so. Just don't know how to recreate the transaction. Watching along with you on this thread ;-)

Ik gebruik op OSX de app MultiBit. Daar heb ik een aantal coins in mijn wallet zitten. Tevens houd ik in Excel bij wat ik koop en merkte opeens een verschil op. Een transactie van februari staat niet in multibit. Ook bij de "requests" staat ie niet.

Als ik in mijn mail zoek, heb ik wel een mail van Bitonic met daarin een link naar de transactie en als ik daarop klik zie ik dat die transactie gewoon goed gegaan is. Maar waarom staat ie dan niet in MultiBit? Want ik ga er eigenlijk vanuit dat ik altijd via MultiBit mijn Requests doe. Ik vermoed dat er wellicht bij mij iets fout is gegaan met het opslaan, omdat MultiBit ook nog eens in een TrueCrypt beveiligd volume staat.

Dus als ik er even vanuit ga dat MultiBit voor mij WEL de request key heeft gegenereerd en de transactie gelukt is en ik ook nog het ontvangstadres heb en het bitcoin transactie id, dan mag ik er toch wel vanuit gaan dat mijn bitcoins in ieder geval nog niet echt kwijt zijn toch?

Maar hoe krijg ik ze nu alsnog in MultiBit om alles bij elkaar te hebben?

En is MultiBit nog steeds 1 vd beste Apps voor OSX?

My English is pretty good, but I can't seem to find a good explanation for "I needed the fiat". I see more references to "fiat" here in the forums and I can about guess what is meant, but not 100% sure.

So who can explain to me what "fiat" means.
(And I'm not talking about the carbrand ;-) )
