Ever since Nouriel Roubini appeared before the United States Senate Committee On Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, to discuss cryptocurrencies – he has certainly been causing quite the commotion with regards to the cryptocurrency community.

This is not surprising, considering the famed economist shared several controversial statements about bitcoin and cryptocurrency in general, such as stating that “only criminals and terrorists use crypto”, and that “utility tokens take us back to the stone age”.  He has also taken specific aim at Vitalik Buterin on Twitter earlier this month, likening the Ethereum founder to a “dictator for life”.

Buterin responded sarcastically that he “officially predicts a financial crisis between now and 2021”.  This is clearly a reference to the fact that many credit Roubini with predicting the global financial crisis of 2008, for which he received the nickname “Dr. Doom”.

Repercussions are being felt in the ethereum development ecosystem after an initial test of the platform's forthcoming software upgrade, Constantinople, failed to deliver expected results.

A system-wide change initially earmarked to go live in 2018, the code release, meant to introduce five improvements and alter the economics of the $20 billion blockchain, may now be delayed following a failure of Saturday's activation on the test network Ropsten, developers told CoinDesk on Monday.

After a meeting of ethereum's open-source developer team last Friday, in which it was suggested that Constantinople could be implemented as early as November, Saturday's failed activation revealed unexpected issues in the code. Namely, a bug was discovered by security lead for the Ethereum Foundation Martin Holst Swende, one which caused two different iterations of the same software upgrade to run on testnet.

A report published by the Financial Stability Board (FSB) on Wednesday, claimed that cryptocurrencies do not pose a risk to global financial stability at the present time while suggesting crypto markets need to be monitored.

The report, which focuses on an assessment of the likely implications of crypto-assets for financial stability is a follow-up on an initial assessment carried out in the FSB Chair’s March 2018 letter to G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors. It also serves as a follow-up to a review of work by standard-setting bodies on crypto-assets published by the FSB in July.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) announced Thursday that it has begun proceedings to decide whether to approve a proposed bitcoin exchange-traded fund (ETF).

The SEC published an "order instituting proceedings to determine whether to approve or disapprove a proposed rule change" filed by Cboe BZX Exchange, Inc. If approved, Cboe would have the green light to list a bitcoin ETF pitched earlier this year by money management firm VanEck and crypto startup SolidX.

As part of that process, the SEC wants more input from the public – to date, according to the agency, more than 1,400 comments have been submitted.

Two of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization are now trading at their lowest level in a year.

Ethereum, the world's second largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, fell to its lowest price since 2017 on Wednesday, a development shared by Cardano, the world's ninth largest by market capitalization.

At 16:00 UTC, during the middle of Wednesday's trading period, the cryptocurrency ether dropped to $211 for the first time since July 30, 2017, while Cardano dropped to levels not seen since last year according to CoinDesk price data.

The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) announced Wednesday that it plans to host an international conference on blockchain technology next month.

Specifically, the conference will examine blockchain's impact on government activities, and will feature OECD Secretary-General Angel Gurría, the prime ministers of Serbia, Bermuda and the Republic of Mauritius and the State Secretary of Slovenia when it is held at the OECD headquarters in Paris on September 4 and 5. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has reportedly established a new internal unit dedicated to researching and regulating new emerging technologies, specifically cryptocurrency, blockchain and artificial intelligence (AI).

The creator of the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency has weighed in on the burgeoning hard fork dispute within the Bitcoin Cash community.
