I am DONE!! (for now, at least).  I started mining on an ATI 5450 at 15mhs.  I then added 3 more video cards and a couple of jalapeno preorders, then I added a handful of BE and red furies, for a total of 50 ghs.
Now I am watching my daily total fall to under .01 per day.  It is depressing. Smiley Sometimes I feel like I need to go back to playing warcraft.  At least then when you got ganked you had someone to blame.  But all in all, it's been very educational, and I am happy with the bitcoins I have earned.  Sometimes I look at the hashing power I have now, and think if I had it 2 years ago, I would be a millionaire, but now it;s just sad to see the scraps I resign myself to making.

All in all, I have broken about even (not counting any residual value of the miners themselves), maybe ahead 1/2 coin or so at best.  I think the learning was worth it, so I don;t feel cheated, just sad that there is no longer room for the little guys to be "productive"

I will probably get rid of my stuff before the summer, when the waste heat will be an added expense instead of a help to heat the house (I am in Michigan)

I can always come back in with more capable hardware at a later time, when the hash to $$$ ratio  and the difficulty rises are less steep

The problem with BFL pre-orders is that we know the cost, we know the hash rate, and we know the current difficulty.  Can anyone tell me when they will Really ship? (no), or what the difficulty will be at that time ?(no)

This is a very speculative investment, and the sad reality is that while it looks like the "deal of the century" at this time, when it ships it may not even be adequate.  When I finally got my jalapeno, it was not the "money printing" machine I thought it would be, and if would have waited and bought hardware at the time I physically received the jalapeno, it was equivalent to other solutions, not a"hell of a deal".

I happen to like BFL hardware, it's robust, looks clean and hi-tech (I know very subjective) and it seems to be bulletproof, but at the end of the day, we all buy the hardware to use it, so at the time I expect these to ship they will not be a stellar deal at all, and will probably have more cost effective competition available and in stock.

For SCRYPT Coins GPUs are better

ASiCs can only mine SHA256d Coins not SCRYPT Coins

Litecoin / Feathercoin / And Countless Others are all SCRYPT Coins and CAN NOT be mined with ASiCs

While up to fairly recently that was true, there are new ASICs coming on the market that would allow for mining scrypt, but they are slow and expensive. (approx. the cost of GPUs, though they do take less power to run.)  As with all emerging technology, I expect the price to drop and the power to increase very quickly, but still as a proof of concept they do exist and are currently being prototyped/tested/reviewed all over the place.

I am curious what they will do to the litecoin/bitcoin exchange rate once they are in full-scale deployment like the current sha256 ones.

Re: Using ASIC to mine BTC convert it to Litecoin, a better way to get Litecoin?
by

The bitcoin route would not be recommended because the scale of Asic deployment is only growing.  Adjustments are in the neighborhood of 20-30% every difficulty readjustment, and while this cannot go on forever, the amount of Asics "in the pipeline" dictates this will continue for at least some time to come.  This means (to me anyway) that GPU mining for lightcoin is the right answer for the long term.  One thing to consider is that you can probably reduce your entry cost (or increase your hashing capacity for the same investment if you find someone who mined bitcoins that is getting out of GPU mining.  You should be able to get GPUs for a lot less than new prices. I know I let my GPus go fairly inexpensively, because I didn't want to bother with litecoins, I just stuck with Asics (FOR BTC, not to exchange with anything)

I wouldn't rely on an exchange of currency, because whatever advantage one currency has over the other, market forces will equalize it soon enough, and you cannot generate a SIGNIFICANT amount quickly enough to take advantage of inequalities in time, especially if you are starting from scratch.

Short answer (ASIC for BTC, GPU mining for LTC.)

FYI, I got 5 of the SiPolar-esques in recently. I still have to try it, but all 20 ports at least boot up fine on my model (haven't plugged it into a PC quite yet).

Proof:

Mine got that far too, now try some mining, and watch the fun Sad   For me it was neither Bitminter, nor CGMiner that could make this work.  (I hadn't switched over to BFGMiner yet)  On one hand, I wish I got a bad one, because the spacing on this is perfect for the usb sticks, I would gladly get another 1 or two, but as of now, having been burned, I don;t see myself risking another $100 on it.

That reminds me, I should try it with bfgminer as well tonight when I get home.

Thanks for the review, Garfield. I've updated the table with a footnote and an accurate price per usable port.
I was actually considering hunting this hub down, when I saw on photos that it had to power connectors, which I thought would mean it could be powered from two adapters. Strange that only one of them is wired.

Just so there is no confusion, there seem to be two versions of this hub.  one with an aluminum enclosure
http://usb.brando.com/usb-20-port-hub_p03123c039d015.html  <- this is the one I actually bought, and that does not work with more than 12 miners.
(the one I purchased with 1 spot for a power adapter)
and there is another one that just has support plates, that has 2 AC adapter plugs available, but I do not have that one to determine if that one has the capability to run 20 miners at once.
similar to http://usb.brando.com/industrial-usb-16-port-hub_p01936c039d015.html but I have not been able to find a place to purchase it from that is reasonable.

Short evaluation- DO NOT BUY THIS HUB.

Long evaluation -  I bought this hub, thinking 90 watt, 20v, should be able to handle up to 30 usb eruptors, without a problem, but .....I just received mine and right off the bat, you could not run more than 12 miners in it, any more than that and the additional ones do get recognized, do not get assigned a com port number , but neither bitminer, nor CGminer, can run.  In addition, the hub is split into two 10 port hubs internally (It has two usb cables coming out of it (one for the left 10 and one for the right 10)).  I took it apart, and there seems to be a spot for a 2nd power adapter on the PCB, but there is no plug receptacle, I may put one in there, but there is some soldering involved and I am not the best at that.  Having one cable plugged into the PC from the hub results in the hub identifying one set of 10 USB eruptors running with no problem.  Plugging the USB cable in the 2nd usb port results in the other 10 being recognized, but when you plug in both, it looks like it recognizes everything (all 20) until you run CG Miner.  Then CGminer crashes and you cannot run.  it will work with up to 12 USB eruptors in it, in any configuration (6+6, 8+4, 10+2) but any more than that and cgminer crashes.  Now, to be clear, I am running CGminer with other hubs (two 7 port and one 10 port(and more than 12 USB eruptors, so I know its not a CGMiner configuration issue.), plus, bitminter doesn;t recognize more than 12 as functional either.

Save your money, this hub is not the answer for running 20 USB miners at once (even though I wanted it to be.)

No, unless it is a good brand such as a Seasonic or Corsair, or something of a similar build..  I fried a 500 Watt PS that was a cheap one, I forget the brand, and all I had was a Gigabyte 7950.
It worked fine while I mined for 1 month, then just burned out.  no OC or anything.

Be yourself.  Changing for anyone is pointless and very short term.  If you do what you like and someone likes you for it, you have the basis for a long term relationship.
Try to be more social, Go outside, get rid of the monitor tan, bike or play soccer or something that you like to do that results in you meeting people of the opposite gender.   Then you already have something in common to talk about.  but the most important rule is BE YOURSELF!.

Gotta love these self-contradictory motivational speeches, you just said changing for anyone is pointless and then tell them to immediately do change themselves by being more social etc. some people just don't do well in the usual social settings, I know I don't Tongue

READ, before attacking the comment!!  Smiley

Not self contradictory.   I said "Change for yourself", never change for a girl or for anyone else).  Obviously, your current habits/hobbies don't put you in a place conducive to meeting girls you like/want/care to be with.  So change THAT.
There may be a problem with your lifestyle in that you may not place yourself in enough situations to be able to find "the one" to be with.  What would you offer a girl?  Think about that.  Are you interesting?  Are you boring? Are you funny or really smart?   Everyone has some quality that makes them interesting to someone else.  Find yours and capitalize on it.

You are awesome just the way you are, you just have to find one more person that sees that. I struggled with similar issues when I was younger, beating myself up emotionally for not being "popular", being a geek and not having the clique of people around me, but all it takes is 1 person, and you won't find them sitting in front of a monitor all day.
