Re: What are your favorite board games ?

Splendor is a simple game about using gems to buy the mines, traders and stores you need to set up a jewellery firm in the Renaissance.

It's simple, deep and beautiful and if I had to pick a modern game that might achieve the same level of popularity as the old staples like Monopoly and Cluedo, Splendor might be it.

I am going to take myself out to a nice dinner, have my way with myself several times, and possibly get drunk. Then again, that is a normal Saturday for me.

Re: Importance of meditation

So, one problem/question I always have with meditation... I read all those great posts describing how meditation made them better and happier people. That's exactly what I am hoping to get from meditation, becoming a better person and in general being happier with my life.

But in so many posts there's someone saying that you can't reach those goals when they are why you're mediating.. I'm not really getting that.. Isn't that the motivation why people meditate? For the benefits?

That depends on your standard of proof. Having said that, what do you think have been proven to exist, according to your standard.

Yes, I would start a religion to recognize me as a demi-god. As proof, well, after 200 years I think people would be listening. I would then use this power to bring world peace and the golden age of humanity.

Happiness is a state of mind. You can "train" your brain into being a happier person. The reverse is also true, damn emo kids.

Scientifically - to reproduce

Historically - to win glory

Religiously - to serve the creator

Philosophically - to answer this very question

I'm a brown man living in Japan. Originally raised in the US. I find the Japanese reputation of being racist kinda overblown, but I can see that there are some systematic issues and it becomes more evident while living here for a long time. I'm not sure if it's a bit different in Tokyo as well, because I don't have any issues making friends with Japanese people here, even with a huge language barrier. Osaka people are always trying to talk to me.

Personally, Japan's had the most tolerable racism out of all the countries I've lived in. I'm just kinda an animal at the zoo here, whereas in the US there's a shit ton of stereotypes from terrorist to socially inept nerd and in Europe I've had to deal with "Are you a Muslim? I'm watching you."

Re: Your Thoughts on Cryptocurrency

One thing i've noticed when bitcoin comes up conversations is that most people have no idea how it works and why its revolutionary. I mentioned that the increase in usage caused slow transactions and high fees, and I got a reply of "they just need to upgrade there servers though". Words cannot explain the facepalm that crushed my face.

Transaction speed needs to improve, that's a given. Luckily the bitcoin protocol can always be improved, but if devs are unable to tackle the scaling problem it will be the end to bitcoin imo. A global, immutable, currency with automated accounting is absolutely a big deal, but for it to actually work and improve the world it will need to be able to support 1,000x more transactions than it currently does.

The dream is going far enough North and seeing aurora borealis... though I technically can stay in Europe for that.

Dealing with being uncomfortable in the short-term to achieve what I want in the long-term. I'm usually a comfort-seeker, so simply changing my mindset has been a huge improvement.

Re: do you have dreams to pursue?

Yes. Started an ad agency at 23 with two friends, no funding, worked from our three respective living rooms for 6 months until we landed a video project that paid enough for us to rent a 270 square foot office (340 if you include the broom closet).

Six years later, we're at 14 total employees, we've generated almost 4 million dollars in total revenue (1.5 this year), we've never laid anyone off, we've never missed payroll, and I back-packed through Europe for a month last year.

It was extremely difficult and trying. Definitely felt like quitting at some points. Maintaining your relationships with one another is the hardest part. Communication is the key. Communicate as often as possible, and as clearly as possible. It's helps set expectations and reduce disappointment.

Yes. Almost every day. Its fun, my friends and I do it. I smoke with my girlfriend. The sex is amazing while high. I started in high school and still smoke. And no, I'm not some stoner drop out. I live with my gf and have a dog and a job and am going to school. I just like getting high in my free time.

Re: How to study well English grammar?
by
Gintas0873
on 12/07/2018, 17:52:15 UTC
This might not be helpful to you, but I'm finding that the same method works for learning non-native languages as well:

When I had to learn grammar rules, I just went with what sounded right and it was always correct. The rules were rarely applicable in real life, and most people don't even use or learn them. Therefore, it was more helpful to just read books and passively learn the "rules" than to try to do rote learning or to actively learn proper/formal grammar.

Re: What's your idea of heaven?
by
Gintas0873
on 12/07/2018, 17:49:48 UTC
The one the TV Show supernatural posed was pretty genius, it was a combination or "reliving your greatest hits" as in the best moments of your life to essentially a lucid dream.

Everyone's heaven was instanced, and separated from other people (so the friend you might be reliving a memory with, probably wasn't there) HOWEVER a few people like soul mates would have a combined instance, and a few people figured out how to move around instances, one character even claiming he managed to meet Einstein and even in death, he was still a busy guy.

Although the stuck in a loop side of things borders on the terrifying for me, having an instance where I could virtually do anything would be incredibly interesting, however I guess after a while it could get pointless.

My personal idea of heaven is something similar. God knows I've got a lot of questions to ask in if I could find out the answers for myself in my own personal sandbox, that's even better than being told the answer.

Re: What are your best memories?

When I was about 10 years old (1972), I had just gotten into the Beatles. So I was in my bedroom waiting to record (with a tape player) any Beatles song that might be played on my new transistor radio. The windows in my bedroom were open and I remember it smelled like lilacs outside. Then out of the blue "Here There and Everywhere" by the Beatles came on only to be followed by the sounds of the ice cream truck coming down my street. Listening to my Beatles - the smell of lilacs - and knowing that I was about to get ice cream was like that perfect childhood trifecta.

Re: Are You a Cell Phone Addict?
by

I keep trying to do this, I have a non-smartphone that I use for calls (I want a landline but can't since I'm in student accommodation at uni) but the thing that keeps dragging me back to getting my iPhone out again is my friends get annoyed that I can't respond to them quickly... I haven't used social media like Facebook, Instagram etc. in a year so that's not a problem, it's things like iMessage. A small example is my mum sends me a photo of my dogs every morning and little bitstrips things but when I turned iMessage off she was sad that she couldn't send them. I know I'm doing this for me and other people shouldn't stop me but, it kind of does.
