Content Creators on YouTube, Twitch, and Wikipedia Can Now Accept Ripple (XRP)
Content creators on the internet will now be able to accept payments in XRP tokens directly from their users.

The tipping-for-content has become possible because of Coil, the brainchild of Stefan Thomas, the former CTO of Ripple Labs. The San Francisco company has launched the beta version of its browser extension app of the same name, which allows users to tip content creators directly via XRP tokens. While the concept is arguably borrowed from Changetip, a now-defunct bitcoin tipping app, Coil somewhat has established its advancement by posing itself as an alternative to today’s ad-supported web.

“For decades, people have discussed the potential of micropayments to support content creators that would move us away from the broken ad-supported web,” Thomas said. “Others have created subscription services that bundle content. But micropayments and subscriptions have always been built as closed systems, which fail to capture the huge variety of content on the web.”

Coil is actually the first when it comes to paying out websites using Web Monetization, an Interledger-powered standard that would enable browsers to pay websites. Towards that goal, Coil will be compatible with some of the biggest names in the web industry, including YouTube, Wikipedia, Twitch, Internet Archive, and Beat, for starters.

Bitcoin ATM CEO: Cryptocurrency Needs Regulation to Survive
In an exclusive interview with CCN, the CEO of the world’s largest Bitcoin ATM network took a hard stance against those who believe in a world where Bitcoin and its peers can survive unregulated.

Sheffield Clark, whose company — Coinsource — recently installed 17 new Bitcoin ATMs in Florida, stated that cryptocurrency is not a viable or realistic payment solution at this time, citing it as a major obstacle to be overcome for all in the space.

“With the time and cost that it takes to use Bitcoin to pay for everyday items as currently constructed, is not realistic for most people to use it in this way. It doesn’t make sense for them to. It is not easier or more cost efficient than traditional financial instruments at this time.”

Clark pointed out that BTC’s best use case at the moment is that of a speculative investment or means of trading and investing in other virtual currencies, something he says is evident from the use of the Coinsource Bitcoin ATM network, which is often used to exchange cash for bitcoin, which is in turn invested in altcoins for speculative purposes.

The CEO pointed out that the “primary Bitcoin ATM customer” comes from the one-third of the world’s population which are unbanked, leaving them with no choice other than cash or bitcoin. While the speculation is good for traders, Clark states that the volatile and speculative nature of the space makes life difficult for those turning to cryptocurrency out of necessity.

Newsflash: Ripple (XRP) ‘Flippens’ Ethereum, Becomes 2nd-Largest Cryptocurrency
A “Flippening” has once again arrived in the cryptocurrency markets, but — much to the chagrin of ethereum investors — it’s not the one that ETH holders have long anticipated.

Bolstered by a seemingly-parabolic rally not seen since January, ripple (XRP) has managed to unseat ethereum as the second-largest cryptocurrency by market cap.
According to CoinMarketCap, XRP currently has a total valuation of $23.9 billion, placing it more than $400 million ahead of ethereum. The ripple price has risen an astounding 64 percent in the past day, capping off a week-long rally of more than 113 percent.

There’s no clear trigger for the XRP price rally, other than San Francisco-based blockchain startup Ripple’s recent announcement that XRP-based commercial blockchain applications will go live “in the next month or so.”

Commenting on XRP’s recent rally, Matthew Newton, analyst at eToro, told CCN that “the stars seem to have aligned” for the coin.

“Despite being one the most polarizing cryptos of them all, eToro customers can’t get enough of XRP at the moment; it has more exposure than any other asset on our platform. As we’ve seen in the past, the price tends to move in short, sharp bursts, picking up a lot of momentum when the hype builds. It remains to be seen how much further it could go.”

New Core Patch Fixes Bitcoin Network Vulnerability to DDoS Attacks
The Bitcoin Core team yesterday released a patch for a DDoS vulnerability that could prove fatal to the Bitcoin network.

The patch note urged miners to shut down their older versions urgently and replace them with the new version, Bitcoin Core 0.16.3. The announcement, first reported on Hacked, revealed that all the recent Bitcoin Core versions could be vulnerable to Distributed Denial-of-Service attack. An attack of such kind typically involves multiple compromised systems to flood a single system (or network) – similar to zombies encircling an uninfected person and disabling his movements.

DDoS perpetrators could attack a Bitcoin network by either flooding the block with duplicate transactions, thus jamming the transaction confirmation of other people, or by flooding the nodes on Bitcoin’s peer-to-peer network, thus over-utilizing the bandwidth through malicious transaction relays. The recent DDoS vulnerability, termed as CVE-2018-17144, tried to attempt the latter – flooding full node operators with traffic. Hacked reports:

“The way the potential exploit could work was by allowing anyone who was capable of mining a sufficient number of proof of work blocks to crash Bitcoin Cores running software versions 0.14.0 to 0.16.2.”

It also means that the miners who occasionally run Bitcoin Core were not vulnerable to the attack. Still, developers recommended all the miners to go ahead with the latest update to stay safe. Also, the patch fixed some other minor bugs related to consensus, RPC, invalid flag errors, and documentation.

How the Recent $60 Million Crypto Hacking Attack Will Impact Japanese Market
Zaif, a major crypto exchange in Japan, was hacked this week, losing nearly $60 million in user funds in a high profile security breach.

Local publications including Japan Times reported that 6.7 billion yen was stolen by an unknown group of hackers, 2.2 billion yen in corporate funds and 4.5 billion yen in user funds were lost during the breach.

Tech Bureau, the company behind Zaif, told its customers that all of the investors affected by the hacking attack will be reimbursed in cryptocurrencies. Due to the scale of the attack, Zaif reached a deal with Tokyo-based financial markets research firm Fisco, which has given the company 5 billion yen in return for majority stake in the exchange.

“The firm originally said about ¥6.7 billion was hacked, but the actual amount has yet to be confirmed as the server that was attacked has not been rebooted for security reasons,” Japan Times reported.

What Impact Will it Have on Japan?
In April of last year, the Japanese Financial Services Agency (FSA) implemented strict policies to oversee cryptocurrency exchanges. As a part of a larger initiative, FSA created a national licensing program, requiring crypto trading platforms to file a license to operate within the country.

Recently, the FSA stated that it has decided to expand its crypto team handle a large amount of applications which are expected to be filed by the end of 2018. 160 companies are currently planning to file licenses to operate as regulated digital asset exchanges in the country.

Blockchain for 35 Million Users: Korea’s Biggest Insurance Firm SK Partners With ICON
ICON, South Korea’s most valuable blockchain project, has partnered with the country’s biggest telecommunications conglomerate SK, to possibly utilize blockchain technology and crypto in compensating users of its mileage system.

SK Planet, a subsidiary of SK that signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with ICON, operates the most widely utilized mileage system in the country that has nearly 35 million users, more than half of the country’s population.

In the months ahead, SK Planet is expected to collaborate with the ICON team to utilize its blockchain technology in supporting mobile services as well as its mileage system OK Cashbag.

Monumental Partnership
In July, Hani, a mainstream media outlet in South Korea, reported that OK Cashbag, the mileage system of SK, has initiated the process of developing a blockchain-based system to handle mileage payouts and various business models.

“OK Cashbag has approved the initiation of OKX Project, a blockchain technology-based project, and is currently in a phase of reviewing various business models and incentivization methods. But, SKPlanet will not engage in any initial coin offering (ICO) or fund raising pertaining to OKX Project,” Hani reported.

At the time, SK Planet did not provide any additional information on the technical intricacies of its blockchain project nor any partners the company intends to work with to streamline the process of integrating blockchain technology into its existing infrastructure.

The MoU signed between ICON and SK Planet has demonstrated the long-term strategy of SK to actively pursue its plans to integrate blockchain technology. Experts have suggested that the partnership between ICON and Line, one of the biggest messaging apps in Asia, encouraged SK to work with ICON to release its first blockchain product.

NYU Offers First Crypto Major in US, Sees Exponential Increase in Interest
New York University, a prestigious college found in 1831, has started to offer the first crypto major course in the US.

Adjunct professor Andrew Hinkes told CBS New York in an interview that the institution is helping students understand both the legal and the business implications of crypto and blockchain technology.

Hinkes said:

“We hope to establish a groundwork so that the students can understand what’s really happening under the hood, so that they can understand both the legal and the business implications, and prepare them to go out and tackle this new market.”

Throughout 2018, the demand for crypto-related courses at colleges has increased significantly, ever since prestigious institutions like Stanford and MIT started offering programs covering cryptocurrencies and blockchain technology.

As Mustafa Khan, a student at NYU who enrolled in the crypto major, it has become important for millennials to understand and study an emerging asset class that is rapidly integrating into the global finance sector.

David Yermack, finance department chair at NYU, stated that students who previously graduated at the college have come back to take crypto courses to obtain a better understanding of the rapidly growing market and the industry surrounding blockchain technology.

Texas Regulators Shut Down Three Cryptocurrency Scams
The Texas State Securities Board has issued an emergency action to halt the deceitful offerings of investments in three cryptocurrency related schemes.

The agency entered a cease and desist order against Coins Miner Investment Ltd, DigitalBank Ltd, as well as Ultimate Assets, who is charged for offering Texans misleading ROIs and promising to grow an initial investment of $1,000 into $10,000 in three weeks.

Coins Miner Charged for CyberFraud
According to the emergency order, Coins Miner was found to have used emails and manipulating online media to solicit funds from Texas residents by pretending to represent Coinbase, a San Francisco-based company that operates an online platform for buying, selling, and storing digital currency.

Ana Julia Lara, an affiliate of Coins Minter who crafted the fake email, is also accused of claiming to be a vice president of CoinTelegraph Media Group.

The organization is also accused of fabricating photographs to show its “state-of-the-art office,” as well as using stock photos to portray its employees. A video featuring stock footage of its servers, facilities, and financial professionals was also cited.

Proper Regulations Will Boost Confidence in Cryptocurrency Sector: Abu Dhabi Regulator
The regulatory chief of Abu Dhabi’s international financial center and free zone has called for tighter regulations for cryptocurrency trading and ICOs while recognizing the growing global industry.

Nearly a year after issuing its guidelines for cryptocurrencies and initial coin offerings (ICOs), effectively regulating the industry, the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA) is sharing its framework with its regulatory counterparts around the world.

“This space needs to be properly regulated, otherwise there is the risk of financial crime,” FSRA chief executive Richard Teng was quoted as saying by The National. “Every time a coin gets stolen or lost, it affects the confidence in this asset class.”

Notably, FSRA chief executive Richard Teng insists that “a lot has changed” over the past few months in a changing landscape that forgoes fears associated to cryptocurrencies to the recognition of a growing industry that requires guidelines to responsibly develop and encourage the sector.

He added:

“We are confident that our comprehensive regime – which we have shared with global regulators like the [U.S.] SEC, the UK Treasury, Financial Conduct Authority and Bank of England, and regulators in Singapore, Hong Kong and Japan – can address these risks and bring greater confidence into this asset class.”

The Abu Dhabi regulator’s comments come at a time when lawmakers in the U.K. urged the government to prioritize regulation of the cryptocurrency and ICO space in a Treasury Committee report published today.

"СЕТАМ" уже имеет существенный опыт по продаже земли. Совокупная стоимость земельных участков, проданных на OpenMarket, достигла 348,5 млн грн. Торги по продаже аренды земли происходят исключительно с использованием современной технологии Blockchain, которая исключает любые манипуляции и коррупционные риски", – отметил министр юстиции Украины Павел Петренко.

При этом генеральный директор ГП "СЕТАМ" Виктор Вишнев не исключает, что в случае открытия рынка земли в Украине OpenMarket может стать площадкой для рыночной продажи сельскохозяйственных площадей.

Ethereum Wallets are Enabling Transaction Scheduling, Killer Feature
MyCrypto, a non-custodial Ethereum and ERC20 token wallet created by the co-founder of MyEtherWallet, has integrated a feature that enables Ethereum users to schedule ETH transactions ahead of time.

Стартап Cofound.it, собравший на ICO в июне прошлого года $15 млн, принял решение о закрытии своего проекта и возврате средств инвесторам. Об этом на сайте стартапа написал его сооснователь Даниэль Закриссон.

Cofound.it намеревался создать альтернативную систему венчурного финансирования, основанную на краудфандинге, демократических ценностях и прозрачности. Однако, согласно заявлению Закриссона, развитие экосистемы пошло в прямо противоположном направлении.

«Вместо того чтобы ждать, пока рынок развернётся, мы решили прибегнуть к созидательному разрушению, свернуть Cofound.it и распределить активы среди держателей токенов», - говорится в блоге.

Cofound.it были твёрдо уверены в том, что глобальная экономика, дополненная экономикой цифровой, станет плацдармом для финансирования всевозможных перспективных идей, однако со временем они поняли, что краудфандинг медленно умирает, говорится в сообщении.

«В феврале стало понятно, что мы должны внести коррективы в наши предсказания. Концепция ICO-краудфандинга, основывающегося на сообществе мертва», - утверждает Закриссон. «Стало очевидно, что “сообщество” как центральный элемент концепции краудфандинга исчезло».

This Ethereum Wallet is Targeted by More Attackers than Fortune 500 Banks
Popular Ethereum wallet MyEtherWallet (MEW) has recorded more attempted attacks by hackers than Fortune 500 banks, according to reports from leading cybersecurity firm Segasec.

Segasec has been responsible for defending MEW from malicious attacks. Such attempted attacks don’t come as a surprise, knowing the amount of valuable Ethereum tokens accessed through the MEW platform. As a matter of fact, users are always confronted with a conspicuous message on the platform’s homepage advising them on how to keep their wallets safe.

An Exceptional Scenario
Beyond the basic security measures that are related to private keys and login tools, overall platform security is crucially essential. According to Segasec, since the beginning of its task of protecting the MEW platform, it has taken down 313 active attacks, with an average of 30 to 40 per week, and these numbers are growing daily.

The CEO and Co-Founder of Segasec, Elad Schulman, explains that such statistics as mentioned above place MEW among the top companies getting hit in the crypto world. He also notes that the platform has been targeted significantly more times than some of the big names in the enterprise industries, like large financial institutions.

Apparently, the need to delegate the responsibility to secure the MEW platform appears to be mainly as a result of these overwhelming attacks. Until the recruitment of Segasec, securing the MEW platform was being carried out by its founder, Kosala Hemachandra, and his team. The identification of phishing attacks and impersonating sites offered a hectic task that would often take the team a couple of days and endless permutations to achieve. This is primarilyy as a result of the volume of such attacks.
