Re: US Elections 2020 - very self such moderated

So aside from this being dangerous I think it's important to talk about the implications of banning the current sitting President, soon to be ex-President.

These are private platforms, and legally-speaking they should be able to do what they want. If the government says that they have to allow X, or must ban Y, then you're giving the government a dangerous level of control over speech. If section 230 is repealed, then you're giving these companies a huge incentive to delete anything even remotely controversial, since they could be held liable otherwise. In either case, you're discouraging competition to the huge companies because you're creating a situation of regulatory capture: big companies are better-able to handle burdensome legal regimes. For example, a few years ago Congress carved out an exception in section 230 for certain sex crimes. As a result, Craigslist had to shut down their dating sections because they didn't have the resources to moderate them strictly enough. Later, Facebook created a dating service, since they have much more resources, and they can deal with the 230 carve-out. Regulations lead to centralization at the top.

If you don't like how these companies do business, then use a different site. There are ways that this is bad/uncomfortable, but the alternative ways of possibly handling it are much worse.

As for the decision to ban this stuff itself: I can see how honest, well-meaning actors at these companies might justify their recent actions. Many of the people who participated in the capitol riot thought that they were doing the right thing, and maybe didn't even realize how much danger they were putting themselves in, but yet a few of them are dead and many of them are going to prison for a long time. People at these companies might reason that too many people are just too susceptible to being manipulated, and at least the top platforms should try to protect them from themselves. The most persistent believers will go elsewhere, and they should have the freedom to do so, but by having the most popular platforms cultivate their communities more, they might actually succeed in reducing the future growth of some of these crazy thought-bubbles.

There is a big risk, however, that this just creates more division. These people can go to Parler, and if Parler is gone from Google Play then they can create their separate app store. It leads down a road of basically splitting the Internet in two, and then we're going to have two almost completely separate cultures of people living amongst each other, which is a dangerous situation. Also, I think you're right in that a big part of their motivation is in appeasing the incoming administration, and these companies do have a history of being very biased. The recent decision by Twitter was clearly them just jumping onto a bandwagon, not a principled decision. IMO they'd be better-off trying to completely redesign the structure of their sites with the goals of 1) making manipulation more difficult and 2) not even giving themselves the opportunity to let their bias affect moderation. It's a difficult problem, though.

Speaking of censorship - any comment on this? https://medium.com/@johnblocke/a-brief-and-incomplete-history-of-censorship-in-r-bitcoin-c85a290fe43

Hey guys and thanks everyone for your opinion, it's great to see a discussion here Smiley

I'd like to address a point here which I think was misunderstood by a couple people:

Safe project is not on my list because of its use case, I don't see how this will be demanding because of its decentralized google like search engine? there are many coins that beat these Project like Tezos and chainlink, anyways we all have our reasons for choosing a coin over the other

While I can understand why some people here have been making an analogy between S4FE and Google because of their similarities, the two are fundamentally different.
What Google does is, you want to gain knowledge about something specific (the weather, how to do one-armed pushups, symptoms of having the coronavirus...) and it tries to give you the best possible answer.
On the other side the way I understood how S4FE works is, say you lost your bag at the airport. Now when somebody else finds it, they can use the app to scan the bag or look up the serial number and will be able to safely verify who the actual owner of that back is and how to get in contact with them to return it.

So while S4FE definitely has some search-engine like functionality built-in, I really don't think they are trying to compete with Google here. Of course feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong.

It seems like this has huge potential and is one of the few projects with an actually legit use case. I especially like the coin's long long track-record and that all-time-high of $2.42, just invested some gambling money and excited to see where it goes Wink definitely keeping my watch out for this coin.

Re: IEO can be a safer investment option than ICO
by
ICOchamps
on 30/03/2019, 16:26:59 UTC
I can understand why you think that IEOs are safer than ICOs (for reputable exchanges only), since to be listed on Binance for example you have to pass some sort of verification test.
But from an investment standpoint, I think that's where it ends. The only advantage is that you have somebody else that did the work for you already (some due diligence), which you should do for any investment - no matter if it's an IEO or ICO - anyway (make sure that the team is legit etc.).
Another advantage might be the hype that they are experiencing currently - which leads to the big pump&dumps that have already been mentioned in previous posts. But that is nothing I would think of as positive actually.

Yes, do read it. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission is not saying that this ICO is with a 100% chance a scam, but they are alerting potential investors of a couple of red flags. For instance, the advertised "guaranteed profit" that I mentioned earlier. You simply can't state things like this...
So, yeah, Read. It makes you smart.

You might wanna read it again. The SEC absolutely 120% guarantees that this ICO is not a scam. It is a pretty good reading comprehension test though.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I didn't know what bogus means Cheesy damn. Seems like Theymos is a pretty cool guy after all (who frickin' teamed up with the government?! or more probably he just thought it was a cool idea Cheesy)

I think Theymos sold his/her account or somehow compromised. Site is sketchy AF, team members seems just random photos. Theymos is not the type of person to promote ICOs.

I think it's way more probable that he's just being paid an insane amount he couldn't refuse anymore.. even though I indeed also think that Theymos actually is not the type of person to promote ICOs here on the official forum, especially with that kind of influence he has.
And, even more especially, with terms like "guaranteed profit". You can never guarantee profit. never.
Sorry, but this is making the Bitcointalk Forum a lot more "untrustworthy" in some way. As the official forum, investment opportunities shouldn't be advertised by it's Admins - maybe in their signatures, and marked as unpersonal advertisements - but for sure not sticked to the top with a statement like "guaranteed profit" or something like that...

Edit:

No. Read it.

Yes... it smell like a scam... better you stay away from this ICO

No. Reading makes you smart.

What? Its been endorsed by bitcointalk but it is scam? Even Bitcointalk cannot garauntee now any projects. We should really be careful. Are there other projects endorsed by bitcointalk? This thread was made since MAY so I was thinking if it had endorsed other projects.

No. Reading gets you laid.

what happen to the bounty payment?
a simple answer would be nice

Bounty was not paid to all participants because the team is outrightly very greedy to keep tokens to themselves and even those paid were given stipends, all these without explanations. Also they have very poor communication between the team and community, in my opinion this is a scam project.

This does indeed look like a scam. And, even if it is not a planned scam, I wouldn't want to have invested into such a team that obviously is really unprofessional.

Re: Transaction fees are a tax on BTC
by
ICOchamps
on 26/03/2018, 18:17:51 UTC
Taxes, like death, are inevitable.  When they go up, people complain.  Txn fees are a form of tax on BTC that goes to the miners.  No-one wants to pay them but they have to.

I think the big difference here is that you absolutely have the choice if you pay these "taxes" or not. I don't only mean that you decide whether to send a transaction - you also decide whether you even want to hold bitcoin or something completely different!
Of course, you can also leave your state - but that is a lot, lot more complicated than just not using one cryptocurrency. So I see this a bit different, even though you have a bit of a point there

People say litecoin will become $1700 by the end of this year...

If it isn't what other coin would you recommend me to invest in?

BitConnect? IOTA?

the two coins look promising...

The fact you even thought of "investing" into BitConnect shows you have absolutely not done any research. Before asking for consultation here, you should always try to make yourself an own opinion. What if some fool adviced you to buy his next cool shitcoin? Always do research.

Of course it is. Just as Cash is used for criminal activites. I guess bitcoin indeed has a cool feature for criminal activities, the pseudonym. But in my opinion privacy is as much important to financial activities as it is to a democracy.

Well, a millionaire.. if you don't invest a minimum of 100k$, I think that's rather unrealistic, but you never know. Of course it also depends on which coin you buy. Bitcoin for example is well-known and the chances for it to go up 1000%+ again are rather lower than for more unknown coins.

Robots will replace a lot of human jobs. It's just a matter of time, and I don't think you really can stop it - or that it even should be stopped. I do think it will have a good impact on our society: people will have to educate themselves more, as work that is mostly mechanically, and not based on creativity/social intelligence can be replaced the easiest.
