Zcash currently is the 2nd most popular coin to mine after Eth (+-800k GPU's on Zcash vs 2.8mill on Eth).

Wallet upgrades should work fine, your wallet.dat file will still be intact in your old install folder.
Make sure you have a backup then do a clean install, then copy your wallet back and start it up.

If you still have issues send us your OS and debug.log details.

Well SegWit is being rolled out with a softfork (BIP9: https://github.com/bitcoin/bips/blob/master/bip-0009.mediawiki)
Which means there is a flag in the version (32 bits):

For scrypt you can simply change the version from 536899586 to 536870914 (In hex 0x20007002 -> 0x20000002), yup you create about 2% of the blocks ^^

You are signaling correctly, the difference is in the version 514 -> 536871424.

It's a combination of your Algo and BIP 9 signals(SegWit), if it's a big number starting with a 5 you are good
