Sorry hang on one sec. I've worked in retail for more than 20 years, and this happens every day. Whose details is it you think are recorded?? The person owning the card's details go through the system, yes, and that can be verified, but the person with the stolen card details could be anyone. They only have to have the card number (and PIN with retail purchases). Do you seriously think that thieves are going to let themselves be traced??? Yes, the stupid ones get caught, but I can tell you 50 examples from where I worked alone where they got away with it.

First, they show their face.

If you plan to make a living out of this you need to shop a lot, eventually you get caught.

Plus you need the real card, if you use cloned ones, the people behind the counter would get suspicious, online there's no such problem.

If you do this once or twice in different locations far from where you live it's fine but you simply cannot scale without getting caught.

Tripe.

A few things you need to know....

1) Retail workers don't even SEE the damn face. It's a blob. They put the card in the machine, they are authorised, they leave. Don't count on a retail worker to describe someone. They see hundreds of people per day, and it kinda blends. Don't count on cameras either, because either (a) the shop hasnt any (more common than you think) or (b) the local cops don't know the person, which means it ends up in "haven't a clue" pergatory.

2) Suspicion from retail workers? LOL, give me a break. Are you aware that retail workers are among the most jaded members of the service industry? Even if they DO somehow spot a clone....what next? They call the cops, AFTER the card has been OKed, and....well, see point 1.

3) For online purchases....do you KNOW how easy it is to set up delivery addresses? Seriously? Any idiot can google in 2 mins flat how to NOT get caught buying items online with a stolen card. Again, I reiterate, the ones who get caught are the morons.

Credit card companies build the chance of fraud into their transaction/exchange cost. And the public accept that. So why not a card->BTC->card company which operates the same way??

Makes no sense this isn't already a thing. And on the other hand, makes alot of sense that Btc isn't a mainstream yet.

Yep it is. And they would STILL work for the scenario above. I'm sorry but what you have just typed is not a justification. The fact remains that Bitcoin is just too difficult to buy. And for that reason, us newbie consumers will never fully embrace it.

If you shop physical goods with stolen credit cards you are not anonymous, people get caught doing this all the time.

It's probably your card issuer/bank (rather than Virwox) that's blocking the card, give them a call and they will reset it. In the meantime you can use Paypal on Virwox if you want, but the fees are a little more.

I called the bank this morning and explained. Reset my 2FA password again to something myself and the missus both agreed on, and they've advised that any payments would be OK now provided the password was entered correctly.

This is a Virwox thing. Let me grab a screenshot and I'll update here.

As I said, emails are unanswered.

Payza seem to require proof of identity, so it's not exactly fast or convenient. Now personally I have no issue proving my identity to anyone. But!!!!

Can I ask the obvious question here...

If I can walk into a shop with my debit card and buy a 52" plasma TV for 1000 euros, and this WORKS FOR BUSINESSES, why can I not just buy Btc the same way???

If I am spending money, I want my purchase NOW, not after they have reviewed my fucking birth cert.

Am I the only person with this issue??? I can't be.

It's quite easy to obtain stolen credit cards, if there was no requirement for identity it was the perfect system for laundering stolen credit cards, buying bitcoin with them, mixing the coins and it's done, the exchange would be bankrupt in a second...

Yep it is. And they would STILL work for the scenario above. I'm sorry but what you have just typed is not a justification. The fact remains that Bitcoin is just too difficult to buy. And for that reason, us newbie consumers will never fully embrace it.

circle maybe?

and credit cards are not like paypal, that you can chargeback at any moment. I don't think they are that insecure to trade BTC

1) Circle doesn't work for EU cards. I know I know, there's only a few of us, but we want Bitcoin too please.

2) Have any of you ever TRIED a chargeback on a debit or credit card?? It's FAR from simple. When my card got cloned (and abused) a few years ago, it took me MONTHS to get my money back. You think this shit happens overnight?Huh

I don't think there is any major service like that since credit card fraud is a major problem. This could also lead to lots of business losing money and the price facing a major fall as of the dumping since the coins would be bought at virtually nothing.

What a load of shit.

Until someone comes up with a practical and safe solution to this problem, Bitcoin will NEVER hit the mainstream. Never.

I didn't read anything in this thread,. but I'm absolutely certain it's all kosher.

Vod (who's Vod btw?), you ruined my life, and spoiled my marriage. My sex life is fucked and it's your fault.

My kids hate me, and they say (in their horribly contracted text-spaak) that you put them up to it.

I thought I could get some relief by going fishing, but now I can't catch anything. You bastard, you even spoke to the fish...wtf.

My health was perfect until I read about you, and now I have night sweats and I can't get it up. (see marriage). My hair also seems to be growing the wrong places. You abused your mod powers to PUT IT ON MY BACK YOU BASTARD.

I made toast this morning and it burnt. NOT (and I must stress this!) because I forgot I had toast on and went for a lengthy dump with the Crosaire (google it). But because you neg-repped my toaster. I mean, the fucking thing was 9 euros from tesco, so I guess I can't expect top-line security. Still....why did you hack my toaster?

Absolute bastard.

Hasn't this imbecile posted many such threads under several usernames? Giveaways include:

- The word (or I guess sentiment in this case) "stolled" instead of "stolen"
- Using mis-translations (on purpose) like the old english word "hath"
- Mixing that with the letter "Z" for plurals.
- Punctuation keys missing on his (her?) keyboard
- A general....what word can I use here....cretinicity?...about the content

I refer you to:

If this is a different idiot, then my bad. But I dunno how I feel about it if so, as humanity is clearly even further down the U-bend than I thought :/

[Wrongboard?] Can anyone help me with Virwox?
by
Istaria
on 27/03/2015, 20:49:36 UTC
Hi everyone,

Firstly, sorry if this is the wrong board. I'm not quite sure where to post this.

I've bought Bitcoin a few times from Virwox (yes the fees hurt) with my Debit card, and I had planned to buy a little more tonight. For context, I am the cardholder in a 1-income 3 person family, where we have one debit card that we share (myself and the missus).

The bank that we use has a form of 2FA on internet purchases which redirects us to a password page where you need to enter (for example) 2nd 4th and 9th letter of the password to validate the transaction.

So my missus (I do still love you darling, but you pissed me off with this) placed her first order through Tesco Ireland online shopping to be delivered, and NATURALLY couldn't remember the password we picked, so she changed it. I, later that evening, attempted to buy some BTC and got the password wrong 3 times. Being honest, I'd had a few beers. So I only persisted to the third try because I figured I was sausage-fingered because beer.

Now I am apparently locked out of Virwox (or their merchant people) and cannot use my card now to buy myself a bit of bit.

Anyone know how I can sort this out? Numerous emails to Virwox and Virwox world services go unanswered. I'm getting annoyed.

Ist.

PS: Mods, please feel free to move this to the correct place. I didn;t really know where to put it. Thanks Smiley

Newbie question about trust?
by
Istaria
on 23/03/2015, 20:57:28 UTC
Hi all,

I'm in the habit of coming to the boards a few times a day and just clicking on the "Show unread posts since last visit" link at the top. One thread (or related ones) keeps coming up:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1000546.0;topicseen

This is obviously none of my personal business and I'm not specifically referring to the thread or situation per se. But the question I have is about "default trust" - what does that mean?

Thanks,

Istaria
