I guess the funds will be lost since I have created a new wallet.dat file over the old one.

I have tried the dumpwallet "filename" option, receiving the unencrypted file,
put it into electrum and it did not show my balance.
What did you import? Note: Don't post your private keys here!
Is it a private key starting with "5", "K" or "L", and 51 or 52 characters long?

Yes they start with a K or a L and also 51-52 long.

The wallet was encrypted but I did not have to type in my passphrase while executing dumpwallet. Maybe theres a clue?..

I imported the Keys directly into Electrum (standard wallet--> import private keys)

When I checked the backup of the wallet.dat file, I found out that I have somehow changed it in 2017, compromising the one of 2016.
An older wallet may or may not still contain funds, it depends on what else you did after making the backup.

I have made the backup in 2016 (of my encrypted wallet) and sent the funds to the receiving address.

Then, when I saw the funds are not arriving or at least not shown, I decided to click on the button: getting new "receiving address" or something similar.

After that I did manage to crash the Bitcoin Core wallet by ticking: running Port 8333 on every start of the Bitcoin Core wallet.

Well, as you might know from the post above, I did not manage to open my wallet from there, nor Port 8333 which left me a little confused and I decided to stop trying since , maybe you have guessed it, Im not the best with this kind of stuff.

From there on I was not able to access my wallet which could have helped to get at least my pub- and private key.

In 2017 I decided to make another backup, compromising the last one...

I have a question regarding the second command.

The:
dumpprivkey "YOU_ADDRESS"

where can I find the address I put there? Is it the public address of my wallet?
I do not own the public address anymore, I just have the wallet.dat + passphrase. Will it be enough to enter the "new" pub key to the dumpkey command?

You first need to find out which addresses inside of your wallet contain a balance.
You can check this by entering them in a block explorer (e.g. https://live.blockcypher.com/).

If you don't have a clue, you should either just let it sync or dump the whole wallet using this command:
Code:
dumpwallet "filename"

Then simply import all private keys into electrum.

Hi,

I have tried the dumpwallet "filename" option, receiving the unencrypted file,
put it into electrum and it did not show my balance.
When I checked the backup of the wallet.dat file, I found out that I have somehow changed it in 2017, compromising the one of 2016.

Is there a possibility I still can access my funds or are they lost?

Or was there a mistake in my action trying to dump the file into electrum maybe because the keys are encrypted or something? I did not have to type in the passphrase I entered in 2016.

Help is much appreciated, Im still optimistic to recover the funds  Roll Eyes

Sorry, its version 11.8 which I upgraded to the latest now.

The easiest probably would be if you  move your wallet.dat to another computer with core installed (into the data directory, usually located in C:\Users\USER\Appdata\Roaming\Bitcoin).
Then you will be able to dump the private keys using these commands:

Code:
walletpassphrase "YOUR_PASSWORD" 600
(to unlock your wallet for 600 seconds)

Code:
dumpprivkey "YOUR_ADDRESS"
(to dump the private key)

Note: Do not delete ANY wallet.dat files. Only rename them. This way you can't mess up and accidentally delete the wrong file.

Hello,

sorry I have not replied earlier.

I had to find a nice Computer to dump the key into.

Now I am able to use one, Im good to go Smiley

Since my knowledge is very much limited to the basics, I would like to ask for some more help.

I feel like holding them long term. Told myself not going to sell my BTC until 2030.
With altcoins it will be different because they are so volatile. Probably going to look everyday for news so I dont miss out on sth. Not decided yet which one to go for though. Probably sticking to BTC and invest a little in ETH short term.

If you don't deserve merit, you won't get any. That's what merit was created for: reward those who can do HQ posts, help users, contribute with the forum, etc...

Anyone can make constructive posts if they actually care about having real discussions instead of only focusing on ranking up, joining bounties or making the minimum amount of posts to get paid on a signature campaign.

I believe it comes with time. I am a newbie, too. Trying to learn more and more from the discussions and asking questions myself helped me understanding the whole network better. While learning you are already earning, no need to gain anything "countable". Also all the good things come to an end so try to go every step with confidence and knowingly that everything has an end...

Re: HOT COINS [Long Term]

None of us, has a crystal ball and we're not all-in on the tech, we are emotional individuals and we've been financially attacked.   Angry

If the majority of us were looking at the same chart and a general direction of the market, guess who will see that, and take advantage when opportunity awaits. It's the seasoned vets. They've been there, done that. The finance guys shorting the markets for a living. We could argue speculation, math and politics all day long, but, what's been done has been done. None of us have crystal balls. One instrument we access to is past history. We can see that they are real numbers. But they are in the past for everyone else to see.. I want to quote a few of Warren Buffett's quotes that came up in my mind when people were panicking.

"The investors of today does not profit from yesterday's growth." "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree along time ago."

"What we learn from history is that people don't learn from history." When investors get either too fearful or too greedy, they sometimes hide behind the notion that "This time it's different." Usually they regret it.

"If past history was all there, the richest people would be librarians."

You can teach risk management, but you can't teach balls. It's definitely going to be harder to grow your investments in this space. My personal advice would be to hold. I don't know where you got in or out, but eventually, you will learn from your mistakes and you will have that much more knowledge in the next run. I hope this helps

That is a nice thread you opened here. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Personally I think:
To accept that I love myself most helps me to find the balance in life.
And so in my investments. Since I know that Im an egoistic person I can go from there. Many mistakes I did in the past came from the thought: I do this investment for my family, I do this investment for my girlfriend...
at last its all in MY head.

So plant that seed of wisdom, knowledge, morality, compassion towards yourself.
so after a while a tree with a big trunk will grow and many people will benefit from the sweet fruits it will give.

Well any wise nation looking for means to grow it economy must embrace bitcoin and other digital currencies due to the fact that the blockchain has the capacity to transform any countries economy do to it advanced way of carrying out financial transactions. And any country who will not embrace this will defiantly leave to regret it.

Hopefully after some time every country will adapt because there will be too many people using BTC. Interesting what changes would come for the world. A more scientific approach, more individualistic and hopefully a world with less misery.

Erst keine Steuern zahlen aufs traden, dann ein Verbot.
Könnte zu Deutschland passen finde ich.

İt depens on what you mean by controlling. To control bitcoin you have to own it.
Other than that, governments can have lots of it if they want to but it looks like that is not happening openly.
We don't know who the whales are, or if they are working for some government really.Maybe they are already controlling it.

Every Shareholder is a owner and we all have equal rights. If someone has got more BTC, doesnt matter. The ideology is right and the timing is superb.

I want to find out why everybody wants to invest in altcoins, what I want to ask is, how much money did you get from altcoins so far?
I can't remember on how much I've earned with altcoins but it's more than enough to be happy with my regular salary for few months.

During the peak times, I managed to took some profits from other altcoin investments that really gave me another source to invest all the profits to bitcoin.

This..

I think in the long run there will be only few coins surviving. Bitcoin will most probably stay first.
Other altcoins rely on the BTC, so in terms of investing in long terms, BTC would be best.

I got into the bitcoin again last year after losing all my 4.5 bitcoins to ponzi schemes early last year. I bought in bitcoin again at $20k. Now bitcoin is $6k+.  I'm regretting my actions.  Huh

Hi Romeoetin

I have friends who bought at 20k, too.
Its not a shame. Money is unpredictable.. so is Bitcoin.
Just make sure to dont make the mistake again and grow from this situation.
My advise... listen to your feelings, if you feel overwhelmed with feelings, calm down and observe your breath Cheesy
And go on from there.
You will grow from this!

Re: The best time to invest in Ethereum has come again!

Yeah! it' a best time to invest in ETH and hold it, even next two months are best because price of all altcoin especially Bitcoin and ETH will goes down. The next two months are too panicful for all holders because market will go down as much as possible. But it will recover at end of this year and will definitely hit huge prices.

I dont see the market recover until the end of this year.
