Gun control violates people's natural freedom of trade, as well as inhibiting people's capacity to obtain a cheap and reliable means of self-defense. It's anti-everybody. It makes us all less safe. I see no reason to single out women in particular.

The similarity between a USD and a college diploma is the fact that both are backed by debt, and the belief they have any value at all.

That belongs on a T-shirt!

Libertarians say it best? Cheesy?
Shh! You're not supposed to say the L word. They are watching, and we all know it's extremely illegal to be... Concerned about natural rights and the proper treatment of our fellow human beings.

But I seek the Great Bitcoin, and possibly the Greatest Bitcoin the Most Holy.

The one that is the sum of two prime numbers, each of which is the sum of two cubes.

O Greatest of Mysteries!

What is your value?

<<< Yes I just made this up and yes it's a joke and yes you can take it seriously and hey, dude, like, the chase is on now, and let the rumor fly, that it may be found, and great treasure awaits>>>
Pythagoras didn't want his followers repeating transcendental numbers in public. He held numbers in extremely high regard. He believed they ruled the world.

Re: "Police state?" off-topic question: (How does non-police state handle scammers)
by
JimmiesForBitcoins

A non-police state is like a non-feline cat.  There can never be such a thing.

Roger Ver once told me (at a dinner here in South Korea) that he believed police should be removed from the state and instead private security could be hired. Any thoughts on that?

My personal belief is that then the richest people would be in an uncheckable position of power.
I was just talking to someone the other day who's father is a police officer. They made the same objection.

My response to that was... Isn't that already the world we live in? The only difference is that competing private security firms would have financial incentive to uphold their company's brand. A ton of smaller clients is worth a lot more than a hand full of rich ones. Their competition is always lurking around the corner to gobble up the available market share should they slip up.

Public security has no such motivation because they're incapable of losing business. Their revenues are maintained by force with threats of violence and harm in the first place. "Pay us or we will confiscate your wealth and imprison you. Defend yourself against us and we will terminate you with extreme prejudice."

So if there is no state is there any laws? Or just private contracts?

I wonder is statelessness preferable to having a state. If you aren't specially powerfull or have influence...
Stateless societies have existed before, and they will definitely exist again in the future. (The internet is a stateless society, for example.) There are two kinds of law. Legislative and judicial. Reputable judicial judgments are the basis of common law. We understand the concept of precedent.

We each, as individuals, take it upon ourselves in varying degrees to enforce what we know is right and justify that which we know is wrong. That is what is common among us, and it forms the basis of a common sort of law. Just as each individual molecule of air produces friction against something penetrating our atmosphere, so too do humans create friction against those would would aggress against ourselves and those around us. Enough friction and you'll burst into flames.

Now, I am the last person on earth to suggest that humans are able to accurately determine right from wrong. Human beings are radically warped creatures with a twisted sense of judgment. But we do have a general sense of it, and we can generally come to an agreement on most things, including how we operate and interact with one another. We don't need (and usually we don't want) some external regulatory body to determine that for us. Gray areas are gray areas, and we can always work those out later.

I don't know.  I started a new threat to address the question.  Please see this.

Energy is technically a commodity. It has a practical use outside of just as a medium of trade. We need it for stuff. Lots and lots of stuff. So although energy supply will increase, energy demand will also exponentially increase. Perhaps even outpacing supply. New technologies, ever multiplying population of humanity, etc. The only kink in that idea is if someone manages to find a way to harness the theoretical Zero Point energy. Then other means of exchange will rise in popularity.

I think the internet will revolutionize not only college level education, but all education. It's going to make the term "market place for ideas" a whole lot more literal. It would help A LOT if the government would get the hell out of the way though.

You mean this:  https://www.khanacademy.org/

That's one example, but we can go so much further. The fun has only yet begun. The net as we know it is only in its infancy.

this entire civilisation is a bubble

I don't think it's in dire need of more degrees Rassah, western countries in general have that many degrees and courses that they don't know what to do with them all, I've been thinking back to the classes I sat in with schools and it amazes me how they managed to make the subjects so fucking boring. I look at stuff they taught back then that I've decided to partly look at again when I don't have anything else to do and what they taught was absolute garbage.

Seriously, how do you make digging for shiny and expensive gemstones and finding out where they live boring? How? In geography etc. all I got was a stupid textbook that ranted on about sand and climate change etc.

I believe it's primarily the result of too many people being dependent upon corporations for their employment, rather than working for themselves as contractors or starting their own business. Working for yourself seems like a pipe dream, and if you want to impress the big companies, everyone feels like they need a PhD in theoretical physics. Plus it's become the "norm" to get a degree. First question out of most people's mouths when I meet them is, "so what are you studying for?" So now the only way to set yourself apart is to become a rocket scientist or a doctor. Or a rocket doctor. Because rockets need doctors too.

Ron Paul is correct it is not money.  Bitcoin is no different than a pokemon card.  But unlike a pokemon card they are each identical (there is no Charizard).  The only reason bitcoin has value is people give it value.  If it drops to $1 a certain type of person will buy more.  If people use it in a transaction, many will keep a couple coins for later purchases.  These coins are collectibles, as are pokemon cards.

Bitcoin as a collectible give it value.  Once it has any value, it can be traded as a currency.  Everyday bitcoin usually strengthens as a collectible.
Except that the term "currency" is synonymous with "money". "Money" is any medium of exchange. In this case, Bitcoin exists for the sole purpose of fulfilling that very role. It exists only to facilitate trade. Unlike physical commodities, it is good for nothing else. You will never see Lil' Wayne with a grill full of Bitcoins unless he has his public key printed in gold on his grill so he can accept donations.

If a community started accepting Pokemon cards in exchange for goods and services, Pokemon cards would be money. Anything can be money, if people are willing to accept it as such. That's why little green pieces of cotton paper with serial codes written on them are money.

Google is shit.

Google is the company, Google VC is a separate company that has a lot of capital and this could be a game changer for Ripple.

To me it just looks like simple ignorance. I don't suspect malice.

Dude is old, probably not very computer savvy, and I doubt he even has much time to wipe his own behind with as busy as he is. Much less spend a chunk of the remainder of his time left looking into some new-fangled cryptogizmo on a computer that he hardly knows how to send emails on. Temporal preference; gold is his weapon of choice. He's familiar with it and he knows how it works. He stands to gain little (supposedly) from paying attention to Bitcoin.

Sueing a monopolist for making something cheap  Roll Eyes
Price inflation is when things get more expensive, not less expensive. Unnatural monopolies (which arise as a result of government, in contrast to natural monopolies) result in higher prices and poor service, never lower prices.

wolongong says the lawsuit is complaining a monopolist, the US, made its product, the dollar cheaper. wolongong is correct and it's a funny reason to sue a monopolist.
Ah, they're thinking about it the other way. I'm not used to thinking of the dollar in that way. The dollar getting cheaper to me means the quality of the dollar's maintenance is suffering, though I know that's not technically the case. I view it as poor service, rather than cheaper product. I'll admit that I skimmed the OP though.

Point taken.

as much as I find the situation funny, I actually have a deep seeded hatred for reddit and wish to have no affiliation with Imgur's community. It is a useful site for image sharing, but thats about as far as I wish to take it.
Justifiable. Imgur's community is by and large extremely... Pro-Obama, if that says anything. I don't personally know much about Reddit.

STORY TIME, tell us why you hate Reddit. I need to know now.
