promissing privacy coin/projects for me are:

Spectrecoin (XSPEC), they successfully integrated TOR and OBFS4 and will offer stealtstaking. They were the first, and only one to my knowledge, to successfully penetrate the great firewall of china. And all on a very low budget. They lack the funding for a full on marketing campaign atm so get it whil you can. It can surely get back to their all time high wigh would be an easy 4x to 5x on your investment now, but imo it can go much higher since it is still in development and has some awesome devs behind it.

I also have a small bag of LUXCORE (LUX) from before J. McAfee came on board. They are doing some interesting things with their webwallet. And you can love or hate McAfee he does have the knowhow both technical of business.

The little engines that CAN. These projects have some awesome devs behind them but lack the funding to have a big marketing campaign.

XTRABYTES (XBY) did not do an ICO but is a rescue project from a failed coin. It was abandonned by the original devs but got picked up by some community members who refused to let their investment go to waste. They managed to attract some very competent devs and are building a highly secure superfast codeagnostic platform that will solve the current issues of scalability and centralisation current platforms are struggling with. They are filing patents which should enter pending state any day now.

Spectrecoin (XSPEC) had an unsuccessful ICO but did not let that get to them, they continued developping on very low funding and managed to pump out some awesome tech. They are developping a privacy coin that has features you won't find with any other privacy coins, features that make them more interesting than the other privacy coins and not just fancy bells and whistles. They have successfully integrated TOR and OBFS4 support into their coin and are working on a wallet that allows stealth staking. They are also the first, and to my knowledge the only, privacy coin which successfully bypassed the great firewall of china.

Although I find they concept of 'coins under 1$' to be shortsighted I get the appeal of finding A hidden gem taht still under $1 so you can load up on it.
$ price is just a small fraction of what makes a coin an interesting invest. They biggest point of interest for me would be good tech, tech that's not just a copy or clone of some other coin that address an actual demand in the real world. Since I believe there is a big market for the right platform, my money would be on XTRABYTES (XBY) a highly secure superfast codeagnostic platform that will solve the problems of scalability a lot of other platforms are facing. Another big market for crypto currencies would be the privacy coins. Since BTC has become almost mainstream and can hardly be called a privacy coin, the demand for a truly anonymous coin is ongoing. Here is where I believe Spectrecoin (XSPEC) can make a huge difference, They have successfully implemented TOR and OBFS4 and offer stealthstaking, which is pretty unique.
Both still way under 1$ and both still in full development with the potential of making a lot of profit.

For me XTRABYTES (XBY) and Spectrecoin (XSPEC) have big potential for huge gains by 2020, both are still in full development and are not just clones of existing coins. XTRABYTES is developping a secure, superfast codeagnostic platform that will solve the know problems of scalability and centralisation thanks to their newly developped Posign consensus algorithm. Spectrecoin is is highly anonymous coin that offers THOR and OBFS4 support as well as stealthstaking, they are the only coin that has successfully bypassed the great firewall of China.
Both dev team are very active and competent and both have a real chance of making a difference in the blockchain market. Both coins are still flying under the radar because they are not spending huge amounts of money on marketing at the moment, they are both focussing on getting their tech right in stead of relying on hollow marketing promisses like a lot other coins out their. If you have the time and patience to let these team do their work you are in for some very nice returns on your investment.

From an investment POV you need to weigh the potential reward against the risk you are willing to take. Sure you can invest in top 10 coins and you will probably get a decent ROI after a while since the crypto market is still young. But I like to look for the projects that have a lot of promise that aren't on everyone's radar. Projects that might not have done well with their ico or didn't do an ico at all. If you can find such projects with an active dev team that means those devs are working their butts off to make their project successful. For me those projects are XTRABYTES (XBY), SPECTRECOIN (XSPEC) and Internext (INXT).
XTRABYTES is developping a secure, superfast codeagnostic platform, Spectrecoin is a highly secure, anonymous coin and Internext is working on a decentralised internet. Those coins/tokens are not just copies of other existing coins with some added bells and whistles, the are original projects that have a real change of finding large adoption. They are also coins that are highly undervalued at the moment and can give you a very nice ROI.

Waiting for my Jr. membership to arrive so I can add the signature to my profile. 2018 Will be the year for spectrecoin. Stealth staking is just around the corner, no other coin can do this for the moment.

You're forgetting ZERO, SUMO and last but not least Spectrecoin. Spectrecoin has an interesting roadmap ahead and don't forget. Default stealth adresses, default ring signatures, in-client TOR + OBFS4. Stealth-staking is still to come. So that's at least 2 unique feature (TOR + OBFS4 & stealthstaking) this coin has to offer over al the others.

I just happen to stumble onto this coin and it made me curious. Whey did a solid idea not break through when it first launched.Probably because the pool of investors was to small and FLT was left out. But with the current ocean of possible investors this coin still has a chance to come out on top. I hope the new team make the necessary efforts to advance this coin to the level it deserves.

To Devs, any help needed marketing this coin? I can help out with graphics if necessary.

How many will survive depends on how many will be able to actually accomplish what they set out to do. If it's just another payement system than it probably won't survive. If your not offering a specific service you will be replaced by a  (few) common currency (currencies).

My money is on:

XBY - Xtrabytes: evolving blockchain with proof of signature protocol, able to handle +10000 TPS. current marketcap: 94m$, price/coin: 0.21$
XSPEC - Spectrecoin: privacy coin with TOR & OBFS4. current marketcap: 45m$, price/coin: 2.10$

both have potential for x100: both markets are big enough to handle a x100 raise of their marketcap, both offer a unique feature/technology.

wildcard: COPPER - Coppercoin: opensource software project. current marketcap: 175k$, price/coin:0.0021$

but only the future will tell us, x100 is not achieved overnight, you have to be able to hodl and accept dips along the way.

His last 'coin of the day', TRON, did have a little pump but it seems it didn't got past 20% gain. Let's hope indeed the madness will stop. This undermines the cryptomarket's credibility and makes it look no better than wallstreet.
