Why was 21 million picked as the number of bitcoins to be created?

7 x 3 = 21 mil
That is some really bad math.
You're nearly 21 million off.

Is it the most safe and profitable to invest bitcoin is just to trading it? buy low sell high?

I have invested in HYIPS , cloudmining, ponzis games, and all of them turn to be scams

when i asked about mining, most of the member here told me it is not worth it anymore

so what the best way to invest or earning BTC right now?
You'll see HODL written a lot on here,
It simply means buy and hold.
It's the best advice for the majority of us that don't know that much.
Later on if you learn enough you can try earning, but make sure you know what you're doing first.

If everyone gets told to forget about mining, who will do the mining until 2114? coz the current miners will be all dead by then  Huh

Whoever comes after I guess the current miners, it will likely me more like a business soon enough.
So people will go to work at the mines, work as maintenance and get paid a wage, while there will be heads of the company on top reaping the benefits and deciding what changes to make to the company direction.

Is it 2114 or 2140?

I liked the "Vires In Numeris" one from the Casascius coins.
Clever and original. Showing some thought was put into it.
The "In Satoshi We Trust" one in particular is pretty funny,
Assuming that the person who proposed an uncontrolled currency can somehow control it to better society.

Re: First Attempt To Spend My Bitcoins Failed
by
JohnFromWIT
on 20/08/2014, 17:18:11 UTC
There's only one place near me where I can spend my hard earned Bitcoins in a public store. So after only recently finally sorting out my paper and online wallets, I thought that today I would attempt to spend some mBTC in public for the first time. After entering the bustling convenience store I loudly proclaimed with pride to merchant, "Can I pay by Bitcoin here?" After initially expecting a most enthusiast reply to my question, imagine my startled surprise when he replied "Um yes...", "...but I don't have the machine here". He then looks around at the other customers listening and shuffles on his feet. I then say, "okay then I'll take my business elsewhere" before I promptly left leaving my goods behind.

You didnt pay fiat!  Smiley

If merchants aren't prepared to adequately provide the means for customers to pay with Bitcoin then this monetary revolution will never take off. I'll be taking my Bitcoins and business elsewhere.

You should return tomorrow and try again. Its actually a bad sign if they accept BTC but so few people ask for it. If I were the manager Id ask myself if it was a bad idea to offer it since there is obviously no demand. If they fail again tomorrow, announce that you will return the next day, so they can prepare for you Wink

A lot has happened in the last year.  He may have been as enthusiastic about bitcoin as yourself at one time, might still be.  Definitely go back and apologize for being an ass and talk to him about his experiences with accepting bitcoin.  There is an opportunity to make a bitcoin friend here.  We'd be interested in hearing a merchants perspective, as well as seeing this thread turned into a successful bitcoin transaction.

Haha, plus one this.
Peak hour is probably not the best time to spring this on an unsuspecting employee who probably has no experience with it.
The manager must have been enthusiastic about bitcoin to announce loudly that he'll accept it in store, a big favour to bitcoin, as it is still a financial risk.
They should be thanked and encouraged to improve the service, not made to regret their decision.

Re: Even us *legendary* members were *newbies* once
by
JohnFromWIT

So we've all noticed the new "legendary member" status - just a post to say to all "newbies" that even us "legendary members" were also newbies once and also understand that as accounts are *sold* here don't think that just because a forum member appears to be "legendary" doesn't mean they couldn't actually be a scammer.

Before you *trust* any forum member you'd be best to check that member's posting history and also their reputation (and no - my account is not for sale).

Sincere and simple message.
Glad to hear it and will hold onto the warning.

I have a related question.
I'm assuming that most legendary players, not just here, but people regarded as great assets to bitcoin as a whole,
that these people all came to bitcoin with transferable knowledge & experience of computer science, cryptography, market economics or one of many other useful subjects of knowledge.
Am I wrong in this? Is there anyone you regard as a bitcoin gem that came into it with zero useful knowledge?

meaby the people that should addopt bitcoin in this phase are the ones that know something about pc or are kind of geeks.
I liked the idea of "celebrities". How about, those that are really famouse on youtube that has millions of suscriptors. They could help a lot if they make a mention in one of their videos.
imagine piediepie with his 29 million suscribers.... ,)

That's a good idea, they all like to wear tshirts sent into them from fans.

Send some to celebrities, all celebrities.
If celebrities painted themselves with their own faeces, it would be a world pastime by next week.

Re: How to attack Bitcoin mining?
by
JohnFromWIT
on 18/08/2014, 19:42:40 UTC
Do you even have the slightest idea about how important Bitcoin Mining!!! and you want to attack it!!! Why!!!

I don't want to attack it! Half my alt-coin investment is in Bitcoin! However if someone says it may be possible to attack Bitcoin with 3/4% of the hashing power, I'd like to understand why it's wrong.

To me it seemed like, (To keep the numbers simple)...

----
- If there were a $1 Billion in new coins made a year then a pool with 30% hash power could expect to earn $300 million in revenue.

- However Bitcoin margins are tight. How tight? I don't know but I doubt they're making more than $15-30 million profit.

- If 3% secret hash power (or 10% of the pool) was not submitting winning hashes, it would take $30 million of revenue from them, making them unprofitable.

- As you're part of their pool though you would still receive a 97% payout,  $27 million. So you may be at a loss too but only a $1 million or two and for that you get to make the main mining pool unprofitable.

- Hashers would leave the main unprofitable pool for the one a bad intentioned person controls, which could then easily accumulate 51% hashing power.
----

Oh and withholding shares can be be detected with some smart heuristics.

That sounds like it may be an answer, why this can't work thanks!

First post didn't make sense to me, this post makes way more sense as to what you're saying.
Interesting idea, scorchingsun says you could find those withholding finds, but would this be efficient?

Unfortunately, a recent backup of the database was not made prior to the incident, and since the website was quite active even a 2 day old backup is useless.

One would think a two day old backup would be more satisfying and bear less disappointment and loss to advertisers and publishers than going offline. Perhaps it would also receive more understanding for the situation than simply going offline.

If you read the full thread, you would know the backup is more than 20 days old.

Never thought about a situation where machines are paying people for work.
That opens up all kind of questions.
