Re: Just purchased a ModMiner QUAD...

sorry to resurrect an old thread, but i wanted to update everyone.  i never was able to get the MMQ working.  Tom continually came up with answers like "your power supply isn't good enough" etc. etc.  still didn't work after i purchased a new, powerful PSU.

then i started talking to another member here - Bitweasil - who surprised me with a very kind offer.  having familiarity with the MMQs and their issues, Bitweasil offered to trade me the broken MMQ (which he said seemed to have some bad hardware) for a functional 1.5y ZTEX which would supposedly get around the same hashrate.

due to Tom's comments, i was pretty convinced that i wouldn't be able to run the ZTEX either, because i thought i was just too stupid to get the MMQ working.  still, i went ahead and took Bitweasil up on his offer and, to my surprise, managed to get it up and mining WITHIN FIVE MINUTES of receiving it!  lol  i downloaded the necessary driver for it to work with bfgminer, and it worked immediately.

hopefully Bitweasil has been able to repair the MMQ so he can use it.  (i know nothing about soldering so i didn't want to try and at that point was already so frustrated that i wanted nothing more to do with the MMQ)

anyway, this is just to say THANK YOU to Bitweasil for his generosity, his helpfulness, and the ZTEX that worked immediately ... after spending months trying to get the MMQ to work and trying to get Tom to communicate with me, this was such a pleasant surprise that i wanted to be sure to post my thanks to Bitweasil.  Smiley

What MSantori has posted is pretty much in line with what my attorney has said as well.  Since I can't afford the MT licensing, I've had no choice but to dissolve my bitcoin-selling business, in spite of being fully registered with FinCEN.  Sad times.  Sad

All I know is that our attorney for my FinCEN-registered MSB advised me after the Bitcoin Conference to stop selling immediately, in spite of being registered with FinCEN and having a great compliance program.  What he took away from the conference, the other attorneys he spoke with, and some of the panels was that unless you have the resources/funding available to register with whichever states you want to trade in, you will run the risk of prosecution.

But that's just our attorney.  It is quite possible that TC's team has found some better way to continue selling bitcoins in accordance with even the state laws (meaning that they operate in a way that doesn't define them as money transmitters) ... so I'm not sure anyone here can pretend to know TC's situation, legally speaking.

What I can say is that TC is intelligent, dedicated, and has a good team to help him figure out how best to proceed.  Since my own btc company is now closing its doors, I can only hope that TC finds a way forward where the rest of us were not able to.

This is all to say to Viceroy that it's not really your place to judge here because none of us know all of the details here, and if anything, we should be supporting and encouraging those companies still operating because if we all have to shut down, that will be a sad day for many of us bitcoin enthusiasts!

I don't have a windows computer available to use .... and the last time that Tom SSH'ed in, he said everything was configured correctly for the MMQ so that it should just be a matter of plugging it in once I had the new power supply.  Didn't change a damn thing.

Update:

It has been over a month and a half since I initially placed my MMQ order.  Two replacement cards later and multiple peoples' attempts to get it working (including Tom, whose product this is) and it STILL will not work.  I've tried three different power supplies, five different operating systems, three forum members with FPGA and Linux experience have tried SSH'ing in to no avail, Tom himself hasn't been able to get it work ... and at this point, I just want this situation resolved.

Most recently, Tom SSH'ed in to a clean install and said he had everything set up to work plug and play style for it as soon as my new power supply came in.  Power supply is here, and there is still no progress made in getting it to work.

That's certainly true for a lot of larger operations.  Remember that the state MT regs were written with big businesses in mind.  Smaller operations with no employees, no office space, etc., - largely in virtue of their diminutive size - can comply with a more modest layout of costs and resources.

As to legal fees, well, that depends on how nicely you treat your lawyer  Kiss

Oh, and yes, excellent article!

hahaha.  good post!  it's also a view shared by our attorney.  Smiley

Is Tangible Cryptography a registered Money Service Business?

Thanks!

Was it expensive and/or difficult?  PM me if you'd like... Or if I'm being too nosy, just ignore me.

Thanks!

It's free to register with FinCEN as an MSB ...

Yep.  Sad

I wonder, would you be willing sometime to SSH in again and see if we can get it working or if it's the same issue?  I'd definitely pay you for your time.

Sure, we can give the reset procedure a shot that may be reasonable to try... I should have time tomorrow evening, roughly 20 hours from now  Smiley

I will drop you a note. Let me know if you have any developments in the meantime.

Also, what was the logic behind the new power supply? What were you using before, and what did you change to?

Well, what happened was people suggested the firmware might need resetting, so I did that but then had a problem getting it out of the firmware reset mode.  I eventually was able to, and then Tom SSH'ed in to a fresh install of Ubuntu where I had not even installed bfgminer or any of its dependencies.  Tom installed bfgminer, still couldn't get the system to recognize the FPGAs, and then asked what power supply I was using.

It was this one:
http://www.amazon.com/Coolerguys-100-240v-Molex-Power-Adapter/dp/B000MGG6SC/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1368337840&sr=8-7&keywords=molex

Apparently it wasn't powerful enough, so Tom advised that I find the cheapest PSU that I could and then connect the black and green wires to allow it to operate without a motherboard.

For that, I then bought this PSU:
http://www.amazon.com/Logisys-Corp-Bearing-Supply-PS550E12BK/dp/B004MU8VCS/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1368337927&sr=1-2&keywords=molex+psu

Received it yesterday, so I did some searching online and found good instructions.  Ended up using a paperclip to connect the black and green wires, which seems to have worked as the MMQ fans and everything are running from it now.

Tom said this would be all that was needed and then I'd just be able to get the MMQ to mine without issue.

I tried, but received exactly the same errors as before.  Undecided  No improvement.

I'll make myself available tomorrow evening to do this, so just let me know when you're available.  Smiley  Thank you again!

UPDATE: I bought a more powerful PSU to use since Tom said the issues were with my power supply .. received it yesterday and got it running with a motherboard.  The MMQ STILL does not work.  Undecided

Tom assured me that the new PSU would do the trick.  It hasn't.  It's been over a month since I ordered this thing and it's still not working.

Same errors?  Sad

I've had my MMQ for about a month, had to get two replacement fpgas from Tom because they arrived broken, have had Tom himself SSH in to my machine twice and other miners SSH to see if they could get it working .... and it's still not working.

Yeah, it's difficult to get ahold of Tom.  I bought an MMQ a month or so ago and still have not been able to get it working.

Are you emailing him at btcfpga@gmail.com ?

Well, Tom SSH'ed in tonight and let me know the problem is the molex power supply I'm using.  His advice was:

"just buy the cheapest desktop PSU you can find, you can probably get one
for $20

its very easy to modify to be stand alone and be able to turn on and off
without a motherboard just snip the black and green cable and connect them
wrap in some electrical tape if you got it, you guys got frys out there
right? you can buy one in store or buy one online, you dont need nothing
special the cheapest one you can find will work."

What is everyone else using to power their MMQs?
