As long as I get a block a day, I'll mine using 2 cores of my i5. (I mean, mine solo.)

Solo mining is definitely still viable. I hit over 20 blocks yesterday on an i7-3820 and 6 blocks on an E7600 Duo Processor.
Just to clarify, the proper command to start the external miner for solo mining should be

If Windows 7 is the culprit we will recompile the client on Windows 7 to alleviate any possible issues. (We usually use win8.1 or win10)
Although many people who have had issues are on Windows 7, I do not fully believe Windows 7 is the problem. I started a wallet and I'm solo mining through the wallet on Windows 7 without problems.
The only problem I faced was the default nodes were not allowing for connections. However, after adding the nodes others have posted into the config file, I have had good success. On both my Windows 8 and Window 7 wallets, I currently have 7 active connections, which is plenty to allow the wallet to fully operate.
I did notice however, when setting up the wallet on Windows 7, for the first hour or so I only had 1 active connection. I have let the wallet run throughout the evening and now have 7 connections. It is as if it just takes some time establish connections. It is sort of strange.

That works for Ubuntu 14.04. Wallets aren't portable because of libdb version.
Being a partial Linux noob...what is the actual command to run the qt once you have the dependencies and gitclone installed?
I've got the wallet successfully running on Windows 8 (currently 5 active connections, was 8 this morning), Windows 7 (currently 7 active connection), and I'm trying to set one up on linux just for fun.
