I want to add that I really have found thousands of cool things and people through /., and they are still a 'goto' news resource for me. But I don't often have the patience to wade into their comments anymore. That being said, one can often find real gems there if you do.

Also, sometimes it's fun to bait the trolls...

As have I on both items.

When you have a bunch of Mod points then reading the trolls can be fun.  Grin

Don't sell your stuff, move to a cheaper state ! Electricity in florida is about .05 KWH, you can stay in the midwest to, some states are .03-.05KWH

Don't forget to include the cost of HVAC to get rid of all that heat!

I see where there are some very large data centres opening up in places like Iceland for that region.

Random thought there is a HUGE hydro electric project in N. Quebec - I wonder how it would work for a co-location site? You could even sell the "waste heat" to help heat buildings.

Just the same it really does depend on the ratio of Difficulty Factor to BTC "value" in the currency where you pay the bills - at US$0.01/BTC and today's Difficulty Factor I doubt if there is any combination which would work.

Re: Cracking the passwords: Don't blame the MtGox, USERS ARE STUPID

Can someone please enlighten me of the dangers of keeping passdwords in word.doc files on the harddisk, and is it safer to keep them on usb flashdrives, even if they are regularly connected to the computer?

It's not that I can't remember a complicated password; however IF one were to forget it at some critical point of time...under duress

Well lets see, it seems that UNIX went through this same debate 30+ years ago - the conclusion was (pay attention now): "IF IT IS ON YOUR HARD DRIVE IT CAN BE STOLEN!"

Of course you can keep a password list on your desktop (or posted in the cafeteria see http://thedailywtf.com/ ), but that really is the same as wearing a "kick me" sign on your butt and whining when you get kicked!

That is why ALL passwords on EVERY system today (even Win 7  Cheesy ) are encrypted!

USB drives are ONLY safer if you keep them in your pocket until they are needed.

HINT: carefully read Symantec's superb STUXNET analysis - then ask the Iranian government about "secure" USB drives. NO I will not give you citations - do your own homework!

I am currently cracking the leaked password file just for fun and because I am curious.
Guess what?

1) Hundreds of accounts with their usernames as passwords.
2) Hundreds of accounts with the password "123456"
3) Hundreds of accounts with the password "testtest"
4) Hundreds of accounts with the password "bitcoin"

Are you guys STUPID?

There seem to be a lot of rules for a libertarian/anarchist sort of forum.
I guess that could be a result of the type of people who it would attract?
It seems like the kind of rule that came about to stop a specific type of abuse.

I just had a funny thought of the Trade Hill guys sitting around in diapers today, so that they don't have to take the time to go to the bathroom.

YOU may think it funny, but actually WEARING (and USING) the diapers is no fun at all!

My sympathies to the "worker bees" at any of the trading sites - I know from personal experience that diapers are the very least of the pain (humiliation, whatever, Huh) that you are enduring right now!

I have been there and can only offer sympathy - OTH diapers are WAY better than an IED that takes some vital body part!  Cry

If anyone really has something to say other than a personal attack/rant I will be happy to respond!

Until then i consider the so called "libertarians" to be about as rational and the "National Socialists" of 70 years ago.

As of right now I am satisfied that Bitcoin appears as a curiosity, much as email once was... Bitcoin, and this community, seem to be moving forward quite swimmingly IMO.

In general I agree, but don't forget the 100K+ "curiosities" that are now totally forgotten!

At one time AOL "was" the Internet - AOL is still around but who cares?

'I' shall personally seek to make sense of BTC market fundamentals and work to maintain the stability of the system. This includes making sure my own systems are secure and stable. Long term planning for my own operations is an important part of this. As I learn things that I find helpful I shall attempt to share them.

I agree "secure systems" that really do lock out the thieves are fundamental. Problem is that this is neither simple nor straightforward.

"mediums for exchange" (fancy word for "money") ALL depend on a huge mass of "people who count" (those who have HUGE amounts of money) BELIEVING that the system really works.

MAKE NO MISTAKE; THIS IS "THE TIME OF TESTING
" (KGV Xian Bible) for Bitcoin. If Bitcoin fails these attacks then it is dead, if it survives then it gets to try the "next level"!

Re: Please - stop guessing BitCoin prices

Well I have no idea what BTC will be "worth" - tomorrow or next year!

I just recall what Warren Buffett says: "Consider the Market to be a madman who offers to buy everything you have or sell you all you will buy at some totally random price! You only get into trouble when you think that this madman actually knows something."

BTC is a "medium for exchange" and no different in concept from things like the Yap "stone money".

It does have a certain utility value, but NOTHING that carries significant wealth can avoid some very determined and very smart attacks.

To me the real question is how well will the BTC mechanisms stand up to real and well funded (>US$100M) attacks.

The Iranians thought their nuclear program was secure until STUXNET (see the Synaptic report)!

Is BTC even THAT secure?

WHO KNOWS until the attacks actually happen and either succeed or fail.

Like Libertarianism itself Bitcoin is going through a transition from elegant theory to brutal reality.
Similar view on Bitcoin as well. Simple idea - no middle-men meddling in your monetary exchanges. When it comes to that, Bitcoin works great "in reality".

We are seeing just how well the Bitcoin world works as the more competent hackers and thieves (i.e. beyond script kiddies) decide to play.

This is essentially what banking and currency were until about 200-300 years ago the current set of crazy banking rules developed because thieves at every level forced the regulations.

My family lived in Arizona when it was still a territory and have some real horror stories about banks that simply disappeared with everyone's savings.

At least now the crooks have to get creative (Worldcom, Enron)

I suspect that if ever Bitcoin becomes widespread it will in fact look very much like any other bank/exchange (PayPal, Western Union, etc.)

Seems to me a lot of your costs are over and above the actual mining hardware.  Even if you return the mining hardware you'll be out a bunch.

Me, I've shut down my miners.  Yeah, I'm small scale -- 561 Mhash/sec, cost me $209.  Not mining at this difficulty until I know if BTC will be > $4 or under .01 once the smoke from the MtGox fireball settles.  =)

I was at an earlier stage in my mining - about ready to order some hardware.

My plans too are on hold until I see just how this all plays out.

My concern is that we may have provided a whole new generation of script kiddies with superb password cracking machines!

This may yet be the main legacy of BitCoin.

I'm a slashdot guy and I don't hate bitcoin. I don't love it either though.
I do however find the rampant libertarianism that comes with bitcoin somewhat annoying.

I too am a Slashdotter who is pretty neutral about BitCoin!

Like Libertarianism itself Bitcoin is going through a transition from elegant theory to brutal reality.

To put that another way: "In theory there is no difference between theory and practice, in practice there is!"

The Goddess of Libertarianism and "Objectivism" (Ayn Rand) was happy to collect her (gasp) government Social Security checks for many years. Her great prophet Alan Greenspan was the (government) person who Nationalized the US banking system in 2008.

Likewise the great and noble idea of a totally abstract form of money is starting to attract some serious crooks of various types. Up until a month ago all we saw were amateurs, now there is enough money (however you define it) to attract some serious thieves - not just script kiddies and small time con artists.

Sorry folks "I calls them as I sees them".

Difficulty is based on how meany nodes are on the network, correct? Growth will slow when miners realize it is unprofitable to mine, at the same time the value of the Bitcoin will go up thanks to increased scarcity.

It seems to me that the Bitcoin was not designed for stability. Oh well, just means you can make a ton of money real fast... but also lose it.

"Never assume malice when it can be explained by incompetence" Heinlein

I doubt if it was "designed" to do any such thing - such are the hazards of exploring unknown territory!

HUGE profits and HUGE losses!
