When you close the lid to the laptop it is putting it in a power save mode. That is why you have the drop in performance.
If you are using the Catalyst control center to over clock you card try increasing the memory. That might fix your issue.

I'm running a 5700 with a 850 watt PSU I do have to spend it at Amazon(Gift Card) and I think I can spare the extra for the 6850. That is the one I was kinda looking at.

First I'd check power. make sure you are not exceeding your PSU. Also have you tried having your monitor plugged into each card, I believe it default to a different card or possible your on board graphics if you remove your primary card.

I had that problem with a card once, it turned out to be a faulty card. I was able to get around it for a little while by overclocking my processor. AMD Phenom Quad core. Using CrystalCPUID
I don't know why that worked but it did. There might be a version out for yours.
I replaced the card as soon as possible, if yours is under warranty I would look into that.

Are you over clocking your cards? If you are and they are set to high I know it can cause a crash, happened to me.

((Just a Re post of something I posted on the Newbie Forum. Hope someone finds this helpful.))
Hey I was searching around the internet a while back to fix a stuttering problem I was having playing games. I came across a nice program that fixed it by overclocking my processors.
I am using a ATI Radeon HD 5700 for mining, it was giving me around 128 MHash/s When I overclock my Phenom it went to 131MHash/s obviously nothing ground breaking but it is 3 MHash/s
I am currently at 145 MHash

Nothing wrong with a little friendly competition
On a side note I have about 150 I need to spend from amazon. Can anyone recommend a good card for mining. I have been doing a little research but I like quote from people that are actually using them.
Trying to join up with my measly 144 mhash but keeps throwing back a problem communicating error. I triple checked my information to make sure it was correct. Anyone else with this problem.
We shall be fighting on the leaderboard..
