Re: Minimum requirements for a mining rig

The only thing I'd be worried about there is the PSU, because often cheaper ones are rated a bit too high. Still, that sounds like it should work.

No need for PSU concerns here. I bought a new power supply for my miner (a single 5870) only to discover that under full load and overclocked my entire computer consumes a paltry 207w of power.
A 550w PSU will be more than enough.

I'm having trouble getting decent speeds out of Jgarzik's miner on Ubuntu 10.10 (Phenom II X4 920). I'm only getting 125 kh/s per thread (4 threads), which drops to 50 kh/s with 4way enabled.

The same computer does 10+ mh/s using ufasoft's Win SSE2 miner.
Can someone please enlighten me as to how I can get the same performance under Linux.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if someone uses my worker's username they just generate bitcoins for me. So what is the purpose of the password?

I switched from SDK 2.2 to 2.1 with 10.11 and the difference with my 5870 is small. It went from 312 MH/s to 315.

how to make 0.4 Ufasoft only use the CPU?

type "-g no"

On my 5870 I am only getting 90 MH/s as opposed to 312 with poclbm.

EDIT: It seem that if you are CPU mining and you don't disable GPU mining it works much slower.

Just tried a clean install, 2.1, 10.11 drivers, and latest poclbm, didn't work. Updated to 2.2 and it did.

Same here. Though I tried updating Catalyst before Stream SDK and it still didn't work.

Went from 3 MH/s to 10 on an AMD Phenom x4. But it only seems to work when I use 127.0.0.1. When I try to send it over a lan to a local server @192.168.0.5 it doesn't work. Also, why do I have connect to port 8332 on 127.0.0.1, doesn't Bitcoin use 8333?

Thanks for the great work!

Turns out if the DPI is set over 100 = instant BSOD. Once I reduced it to 100 Catalyst and Stream SDK installed fine. After it's installed, if I set it over 100 Windows will only boot in safe mode. And 100 is too small for me.  Embarrassed

This is really aggravating... I got 2 BSOD's while installing Catalyst and it finally worked the third time. Now I'm trying to install Stream SDK another couple of BSOD's and now my computer doesn't boot. I get the "starting windows" with the balloons, then the fan on the video card spins up and the screen goes black.  Huh

Looks like I'm going to have to install either Win7 x86 or Ubuntu 64-bit.  Embarrassed

Can someone please upload Stream SDK 2.2 somewhere like hotfile or rapidshare. The link on AMD's website to it is broken.

windows 7 32bit one here: http://www.downloadatoz.com/software-development_directory/ati-stream-sdk/downloading.html

I appreciate the effort but I'm using Windows 7 x64 which they don't seem to have. I sent a post to AMD to ask them to fix the link.

EDIT: Here's a link to the 64-bit version: http://www.downloadplex.com/Windows/Development/Other/ati-stream-sdk_276909.html

Do you have ATI Stream 2.2 SDK?
by
Lardie
on 09/03/2011, 00:25:31 UTC
ATI decided to rename Stream SDK to AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP), the problem is they changed their website and broke the link to the old version such as of Stream like 2.2 and 2.1. If anyone has them please upload them somewhere like hotfile, rapidshare etc.

Here is the site: http://developer.amd.com/gpu/AMDAPPSDK/downloads/Pages/default.aspx (The link at the bottom to the old Stream SDK is broken)

Thanks for all the comments. One final question before I buy; are there any difference between a card that has OpenGL 3.1 to one that has OpenGL 3.2 as far as mining is concerned?

Hey,

work on the ISO lost the battle with my 3.5yr old for my attention this weekend!

I will have time tonight and tomorrow to integrate the ATI stuff, and should have a 5870 arriving on tuesday to test it and improve things myself.

Andy

Will there be anyway to install it directly to a hard drive?

Go for the MSI cards, they have dual cooling fans which helps to keep your card cool when its gonna be on 24/7. MSI has good warranty too.

I assume you mean Gigabyte. Thanks for the advice.

The XFX 5870 doesnt have voltage control due to XFX being cheap and removing components form the VRM.

EDIT: If you are planning to buy hardware now for mining you most likely didnt understand how bitcoins work.

Reading the reviews, it seems the Gigabyte cards don't have voltage control either, and I'm buying the card primarily for gaming.

Comparing three 5870 cards
by

Hi people

I'm new to Bitcoin and video cards so please go easy on me if this question is silly.

I'm looking to buy an ATI 5870 and found that Newegg had 3 for  $200 after rebate. http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=ATI+5870

I was wondering if there were any important differences between them, or between XFX and Gigabyte. More specifically my questions are:

Is there an advantage to the cards with two fans over the card with one? Does the extra fan make them run cooler?
Secondly, two of the cards have 850mhz core clocks and one has a core clock that runs at 870mhz. Will the 870mhz card mine quicker, or can it be overclocked more?

Cheers!
