I imagine so since it would create a windtunnel-like effect but it would be nice to make sure.

Im seeing an increase of about 50mh/s on average going from Lion to Mountain Lion with a stock 5870

Went from 245 (pitiful for a 5870) to 302mh/s

Still not fantastic, but nice on stock for OSX.

Just a heads up I guess.

Never had a PSU or anything else go out in my 5 rigs and I've been at it since early 2011.

Only casualty was a fan bearing on a 5830.

Though, I do use a battery backup on each machine, with a line conditioner, and load switcher to industrial outlets.

I also use ferrite chokes on all my power cables.



But maybe I am paranoid.

I believe Guiminer (so of course its base as well) has that feature.

You use the -s flag.

Example -s0.1 should make it wait for .1 seconds between hashes. It can dramatically reduce temperatures, but also hashing power.


I think Phoenix has a similar feature.

Not sure what happened, but I have had a few abnormal crashes after 12.1, even after using drivers weep etc. strange.


It seems to be pretty stable now though, I left the miner off for a couple days.

No need to roll back the whole driver. Run the uninstaller for Opencl only, then extract your old driver and install just the old file.

Only downside  (of it is one) is that further uninstalls and updates may fail to remove the old cl SDK unless you keep the original installation file.

Use guiminer (or backend) with -s 0.02

This creates a pause and effectively reduces speed and temps.

Previously I had a 5830 running at 272 Mhs with Phoenix 1.7 Phatk2 128worksize on Cat 11.11

Now getting 250 Mhs with the same settings.

Well this does open up the compiler to be optimized for bitcoin-based applications, though I doubt much gain is to be had.

Similar to how some modify their C compilers I'm betting someone will do the same for us.


Though I do not think it is actually 'open' to everyone yet, just that they are planning on releasing it.

A few quick pointers for newbies running Windows.

Now to really do farming with Bitcoin you should setup custom linux distros to boot from flash drives preferably, of which there are many guides around the forums, but it is understandable to want a dual purpose machine now that the price has settled and for that most of you will want a windows box.


Advice #1:
Get some Malware protection. Spybot won't cut it.


Since we are in this for the money (most of us) I suggest Microsoft Security Essentials, it is free and works well in conjunction with Malwarebytes.

You can either use Malwarebytes on a scheduled scan, or preferably buy a license for the realtime protection. Newegg often bundles OEM disks with motherboards and other components, so knock it out there if you can since the costs will be much cheaper.

Use Blocklists.

Grab a copy of Peerblock 1.1 (or whatever newer version at the time of reading)

Peerblock is an excellent tool for local IP address banning, you can import custom blocklists from iblocklist.com

I suggest:
primary threats
fakers
web-exploit
atma
zeuz
and the default spyware filters.

This can also be useful for gamers and P2P hounds.


Alternatively or in conjunction you can use the HOSTS file native to windows for blocking known bad IP's.

Block Javascript when browsing.

The forum hack awhile ago should be proof of this, people will and are using Javascript Miners to generate bitcoins off of your browsing.


To help protect yourself I suggest installing NoScript if you use Firefox, or using Chrome's built in javascript exceptions.

In Chrome goto Options -> Under The Hood -> Content settings

Turn off plugins and javascript for sites you suspect may be trying to steal your logins or mine coins. At the very least block them for this forum.

Use a virtual machine for your wallet.

If you are adverse to linux and have a copy of Windows 7 Professional, you can install a free version of Windows XP as a Virtual machine called "XP Mode'  http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

Setup this machine with the wallet application and then never use it to do anything other than access your wallet.

There is no reason to clean out the entire driver, just install the OpenCL Package by itself, it is open cl, not the driver that makes the difference.

Only about 2 minutes of downtime and I get 3Mh/s more on Phoenix with the Phakt kernel.

In the guru3d download it is under: Setup -> Packages -> Apps -> OpenCL

I am running 11.8 Win7 x64 on a R5830. I installed the regular version of OpenCL from 11.9RC not OpenCL64.


(In the last 5 min: 24 Accepted; 0 Rejected so looking pretty stable to me at first glance.)

AMD just hasn't made a driver that can do this, why? Because there isn't a gamer market for linux I am betting they didn't see the cost effectiveness of programming one for a market that is unlikely to use their product for anything other than academic/trasncoding in the first place.

Like I said before, just use RadeonBiosEditor under windows to set the values, THEN you can put it in a linux machine and have everything preclocked/tweaked requiring with no extra drivers or tweaking at all.
