But I do think it's  fair question to wonder why anyone would spend tens of thousands of their own money, and 12 hour days to support something for free.

I just want to briefly address this comment.

As for money, the data center we are hosted at I've worked with for years.  They're very helpful.  Most of the hardware we have is donated, however I have been able to score some upgrades and additional items from donations and such and by sweet talking the data center owner. There are actually a few techs there who have their own mining hardware mining on Eligius from inside the same data center. (How's that for low latency?)  So, we have a good deal of support from various aspects of the community, and it is much appreciated.

When I contacted the data center this afternoon and was going over the issue they were all for getting it resolved and went to work seeing what they could come up with to help without breaking the bank.  Turns out we were able to get a very nice upgrade to the main database server for pennies on the dollar.

I put in my personal time and effort because I believe Eligius is successful, I believe it is the best mining pool, and I believe a legitimate and transparent no-fee pool needs to exist for miners to use to lower their variance without giving up huge amounts of their earnings to do so in pool fees.  I personally want such a service to exist, and I use Eligius myself with my own hardware.

Hopefully this helps.  Thank you everyone for your support.

-wk

WK,

What you are doing is fantastic, and I feel badly that your whole weekend is being consumed by this significant downtime and upgrade to the pool. This is Theron H. with the Life On Bitcoin team. When KnCMiner donated a Jupiter to our film project, they set us up on Eligius. This was in early October. Every time the pool has had difficulties, or the coins have gone to the offline wallet, you have always made good. The bitcoin world needs as many honest souls like yourself as it can get.

I just sent you a 0.03BTC tip for your dedication and hard work. Thank you for all you do.

yes... i paid 25 BTC for t-shirts and other stuff and I never got them Sad

even bought them sushi :/

I always had a bad feeling about them :/

lol no. they are good people. im sure the swag not getting mailed was an oversight.

Their facebook page is still updated frequently,  making posts the last few days.  Might want to send them a message on there if for some reason you didn't get your swag.

yeah, i lack facebook. oh well.

Goat,

I checked bitcointalk several times a week for the past few weeks, but I didn't see the updates to this thread until today. :/ Sorry, I forgot to check this thread.

I'm glad you still think we are good people.  Smiley

I'm sorry you still don't have your swag, but I put that ball in your court quite a while ago.

I sent you a PM to your bitcointalk.org profile clear back on November 2nd, 2013 with a bunch of questions for you about t-shirt size, t-shirt colors, shipping address, etc., but I didn't get a response from you. I just checked again, and there is no response in our inbox, so I didn't just miss it. I should have followed up with an additional PM. Get back to me, and we will get you taken care of, and include the size for your significant other, and what she wants, and we will send her a couple of shirts as well.

By the way all, the post-production is going really well. Here is our latest blog post about it.
http://lifeonbitcoin.com/post-production-status-report/

After that was published, Thursday night we went up to the Good Line's offices and we watched the rough cut. We are all really happy with how it is taking shape.

Thanks to all who have shown such interest and support!

Hi Lateblooming,

I'm just getting bitcointalk.org messages now.

I sent you an email response about 8 hours ago from your website query. I hope you got it. Sorry that receipt got missed. You should have it now. We really do appreciate it and the donation!

@Chaang Noi, thanks for helping him out!

I've been swamped. I manage the team, but it is in addition to my full-time job, and it has been very busy at my other work. Austin and Beccy have been traveling, and I'm responsible for these receipts.

Add Block 262301 to the ones which need to pay out. Eligius is acknowledging there are delays.

This is terrific news! Beccy and Austin have inspired me to take a similar journey only I'm going to use Goldcoins.

Love the videos and awesome vibes!  Smiley Cheesy Grin Cheesy Smiley

First, a quick aside: Who'll be the first to travel the globe only using alt coins/cryptocurrency? Maybe a slightly easier task, though I'm currently only a Bitcoin guy.

Excellent, excellent video presentation.

Seriously, this is top priority, and in no way this issue shouldn't have been fixed already. This is a disservice to everybody who has donated one satoshi or more toward this noble cause.

FIX IT!

Now, I want to supply that piece of barn to have it carried with them around the world to be signed.

Would they like to be on at least one radio show in Chicago when they pass through this way?

Okay, I just left a screaming message for the developer to GET THIS FIXED. I wish I knew how to do it myself. I'll report back in the morning. Yes, we want to be on a radio show! Which one and how?

Theron H.

Okay, Connor said he fixed this, so the website should be able to index properly. Do you have a contact for a radio show?

Thanks for your support!

Hmm..
Going to "live on money" for 90 days?

Forgive me for not wanting to to donate.

Raphael Fellmer and Daniel Suelo will not be impressed.

Austin and Beccy are already doing it. The project has been going now for more than 50 days. They have used only btc for their everyday expenses like rent, groceries, gasoline, exercise facilities, lessons, farmers markets, and other stuff since July 23rd. (They have to pay taxes, credit card bills, and student loan debt with US dollars and that was originally outlined in the rules.) They have used about 33 businesses, for their needs and wants, and with about 2/3rds of those businesses, they persuaded them to accept btc.

Thanks for tipping me off to Fellmer and Suelo. They both look like fascinating characters, and it looks like Suelo lives in Moab, Utah - not too far from us. Maybe we can connect. I'll have to see if I can find some video content for rent or online, and see how the stories are built.

I appreciate the feedback.

Cheers,
Theron H.

Reservations at 300,000 hotels available for bitcoin.
by

The Life On Bitcoin documentary project is pleased to announce a new sponsor in http://www.SimplyTravelOnline.com. Simply Travel performed the heavy lifting, and helped us with airline tickets and hotel reservations for the Crypto-Currency Conference coming up in Atlanta on October 5th.

Here is our blog post about this: http://lifeonbitcoin.com/300000-hotels-worldwide-available-for-reservation-with-bitcoin/

This is a soft beta launch, and they are still working on improving it, but this looks like it is going to be a great service with more than 10 plus years experience in the travel industry.

Let me know if there are any questions.

Thanks,

Hey guys, the evil meta tag is still there:

This meta tag needs to be removed. There is a setting in Wordpress which allows you to be indexed in the search engines, that should be enabled. If you use some funky theme plugin, sometimes there are option there too. As long as this issue persists you have zero exposure on any search engine. It's REALLY BAD for publicity.

Life on Bitcoin

I partnered with a few friends to work on a feature-length documentary following a newly married couple living solely off of bitcoin for their first 90 days of marriage. I created the website and developed some tracking tools to monitor the real-time progress of the crowdfunding campaign.

Wow! When I set up WP sites, one of the first things I do within 60 seconds is tick/untick the robot box. In fact, by default its configured for the search engines to spider the site. One has to manually/purposely tick the box so that that's no longer the case.

I messaged Connor Boyack about this meta-tag issue, and I know he has been swamped. I'll follow up with him again. Thanks for honey badgering us Smiley

I desire to ship to them a piece of barn wood, specially distressed so that a black felt tipped pen can write on it. The goal being that as they connect with fellow bitcoiners or others, they'll have the option of signing the board. Once the couple settle into their first home, they'll be able to hang the board from the ceiling in such a way to enable them to view the signatures and notes on the front, back, and even on the one inch sides.

The length of the board will be predicated on the maximum allowed dimensions that can be shipped. The width will be six to eight inches, having a one inch thickness. It will be distressed in some shade of antique white. Maybe having a package of multi colored markers on hand oppose to only a black one would be a better idea.

Consider it a memento of the trip for years to come.

That is beautiful and really cool. I'll talk to Austin and Beccy about it, and get back to you by PM with their address. Wow, that is so kind!

If you plan to take I-80, you'll travel through the state of Iowa. Without being too specific, I live in a city located along I-80 in the state of Iowa.  I'd love to meet you and help out if I can.  I may not be the only Iowan bitcoiner, but I have yet to meet another.  To my knowledge, there are no businesses that accept bitcoin in the state; however, I've managed to use Gyft to get most of what I need.  @LifeOnBitcoin, PM me if you would like my details.

I'll PM you. There is a high likelihood we will be using that route as we are going to Chicago. Can you try to get a local mom and pop restaurant to accept btc? We could do lunch with you on the way through to Chicago. Also, if you could talk to local gas stations, and get one on board, that would be awesome! I'll PM you later this evening.

Theron H.

I already have a couple of restaurants in mind that I think might be willing to accept btc, a gas station too I guess.  Do you typically encourage merchants to use a payments processor (Bitpay or Coinbase)? As a customer I think both are suitable, but I know Coinbase is currently offering no fee for the first $1M.

For processing, we normally encourage BitPay, because they have the most serious suite of tools, and they have reps in multiple states that can help with integration.

if we have to use intermediaries to survive we will, as that falls within our rules.

That's cheating and your rules are flawed. You've cheated from the very start of this "experiment" and to be honest, I expected it. Congratulations on proving nothing.

I frankly don't know what you are talking about, and normally I don't countenance these types of comments with a response. I'll make an exception for you. Our rules are public and clear. For the benefit of everyone else reading this thread, here is a list of 28 businesses which we published on our Facebook feed back on August 28th (the list has actually grown since then):

https://www.facebook.com/LifeOnBitcoin/posts/193516810826959

El Azteca
La Nay Ferme
Metropolitan Salon
Our landlord
Bitmit.net
Bitmunchies.com
Lolo's Fresh Food Market
Ridley's Market (and gas station) Midway
XOskins
Bitfash.com
Phillips 66 in West SLC via employee intermediary
Sweeto Burrito
Beli / Dawgs & More
Siegfried's Deli
Naturol Fuels (a juice place)
Lau Family Farm
Icecreamconeucopia
Harmony Homegrown
7/11 via the owner
Bitcoinstore.com
Station 22
Echo Theater
Firehouse BBQ
Frost Homestead
AT&T Store via local bitcoiner intermediary
Xtend Barre Dance Studio
Bees Brothers
McNeil Printers

A couple of notes.
1. We only used an intermediary at three of these businesses as specified above. This was a last resort. The rest of these businesses agreed to accept our bitcoins directly.
2. Furb, the intermediary at Phillips 66 will accept bitcoin when he is on shift from anyone. The intermediary at the 7/11 in Provo is the owner of the store.
3. For most of the businesses, we were their very first bitcoin purchase.

Additional note, not everyone of these businesses is ready to accept btc from the general public, but most of them are exploring it or have started accepting btc from the public.

I'll let the community be the judge as to the value of our project.

As always, if you have any questions or feedback, just let me know.
