Nice feel good article...

Quote
There are many who argue that Bitcoin cannot be a store-of-value based on its whipsaw volatility but valuable insight can be drawn from gold’s price action during the 2008 financial crisis.

Gold certainly doesn’t look like a safe haven after a 24% plunge in less than 2 months, even more worrisome is the fact that the S&P 500 remained flat during that period. Therefore, is it really fair to analyze any correlation over such a short period? Does that sharp movement in price invalidate gold’s resilience during market uncertainties?

The fact is that Bitcoin has zero correlation with other asset classes.
Said in laymen terms: Honey Badger doesn't give a fuck.
I won't comment again my own theory about "mining capitulation" induced dump in bitcoin, only to be reinforced by general asset classes crash. So Bitcoin capitulation started for reasons all inside the bitcoin "ecosystem" only to be later reinforced by general market crash.

Bitcoin going down because other asset classes crash (Equity, Debt and Gold) going down could lead you to think that bitcoin is still used as a gambling tools by many.
Trading bitcoin has low correlation to other asset classes and high volatility, this is a wonderful instrument for scalping (beware: this doesn't mean in any way it is a profitable strategy to scalp on bitcoin).
So, despite the digital gold is the best narrative I can think of while dealing with bitcoin, this proved to still be a narrative, not supported by data and market evidences.

Actually, if you want to have a ray of light, you can think that bitcoin is not the one you observe on the exchanges.
As beautifully pointed out by @Plutosky on the Italian board, bitcoins used for trading are only a minuscule part of the whole bitcoin used out there.

If bitcoin would have been a pure gambling tool, given the enormous swings during the last days we would have seen a great surge in  bitcoin transactions and a subsequent rise in transaction fees. Ok, we observed a rise in both metrics, but nothing comparable to what would have happened if we had observed a "rush" to the exchanges to trade bitcoins. We observed a few weak hands running to convert into Fiat, a few buying) but the vast majority of hodlers kept on...hodling.

If we look at LN statistics we see that the allocated bitcoins in LN are almost unchanged. Sign that no one thought their precious coins were at risk committed to a LN channel.

https://i.imgur.com/dLGzujP.jpg

Number of allocated BTC coins actually slightly increased over the market dump: sign that the LN user didn't think their coins were at risk being committed to a channel instead of rushing to a fiat exchange.

So, don't infer anything about bitcoin only looking at the price: the price is one of the many aspects of bitcoin, but there is much more to deal with than price.

Hey, could you please share the source where that graph comes from? Thanks.

Has anyone else received "edit" privilege so far?

Looks like Taras stopped checking here a year or so ago... Should be caught up now.

If your account isn't added, check that you spelled it correctly OR read my reply below...

P.S. IRC requests are much preferred...

I would like to kindly ask to get editing rights to the English language and German language Bitcoin Wiki.

The German Bitcoin Wiki currently only contains a bit over 30 pages and is very outdated. A lot of broken links, etc.
Would be very happy to help clean it up, to translate content from the English version and to expand wherever I can.

Username: caloon
Don't know how to do German wiki side stuff. Reach out on IRC.

Please activate my account.
Username: Kraken

thank you!

Please demonstrate you represent Kraken.

Hi. Please approve my account "Linux" for editing. Right now i want to fix broken links in https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/P2Pool
Username: media
Can you two make a reasonable username?

barry88 and emily17

Thanks!
Why are there two???

Hey there!

Would like to request edit priveleges for the LivenPay wiki page - have created the account in that name.

We're a payment platform launching our network currency (LVN) on the Ethereum blockchain - would be great to create an up to date wiki on us
What does this have to do with Bitcoin?

Hi,

my login username to the wiki is Skelpy

We would like to add our blockchain to https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Skelpy

Thanks!

Scamcoins are not allowed on the wiki.

yes because of LN. Grin

EDIT: LN is off-chain and you cannot measure numbers. within a channel payments are not visible.

Hey, Gyrsur - you seem LN conversant. Maybe you can help me with something I've been puzzling over. 1ML (https://1ml.com/statistics) publishes something they call 'Updated Channels (24h)'. Are you aware of a definition of this term?

It means that some of the channel parameters have changed over the past 24 hours. Most of the time it is the capacity that changes - for example it could increase.

I'd like to run a LN node. Initial funding will come from some small profits I made in the current wave of volatility. I have the latest bitcoin client (Core  0.17.1) running on Linux. Which LN client do you think is the best choice at the moment?

Depends on what do you want to achieve. If you just need to make some payments via lightning every now and then, just go for a lightning wallet. If you want to run a node, provide liquidity to the network, process payments on a large scale - I would agree with BobLawblaw and suggest LND. Based on experience we had with it for more than a half year it proved to be more robust and stable implementation in comparison to c-lightning and ACINQ/eclair.

A few updates:

- pagination for big lists (especially on the history of node)
- night mode
- graphs for total amount of nodes and nodes state change: https://lightblock.me/lightning-network-stats/graphs/nodes-total The nodes state change graph shows how many nodes were changing their state from active to inactive and vice versa
- new sorting: you can now check the most uptime and downtime nodes
Please note that we have started to log the changes of node state in December, so we don't know how long the older nodes have been online/offline before that, so you will notice some discrepancy for older nodes. We have not found a turnaround how to calculate that yet.

The input is the signed transaction ID...
It's essentially the way you send bitcoin by getting someone to send you coins as an output and you going on to send coins as an input.

Ah, I know generally what the input is =) Just wondering how it is applicable here. Does buwaytress  want to see groupings by input for the channel funding transactions? Not sure...

Glad you found that useful. I now see your open issue on Blockchair GH... good news is that it seems to be a recognised bug and you'll have made the fix possible! I haven't had the opportunity to truly use all the explorers out there but Blockchair's pretty much the best deal to me for native SW support... which makes me wonder if those others I mentioned would have caught up.

Lightning analysis will be even more interesting I think, though there's already some explorers like 1ML and LightBlock - admittedly with very basic analytics atm, don't seem to see groupings by input available.

Hi,

May ask what do you imply by "input"? Do you mean capacity?

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Bitrefill.com

First off, your site is very neat, navigable, and has everything I need from a Lightning explorer. I tested this with the Bitrefill Lightning node, and the information seems nearly correct except for the issue that things aren't being analyzed in real time, which is a minor drawback compared to everything else on the site. I typically don't use Geolocation for nodes, but it's something neat to look at. Good touch!

Second, what sources do you use to calculate the fiat pricing of coins? You don't have anything like a FAQ on the site that explains this, and this is something typically listed on most block explorers. It's always interesting to me and also somewhat important that sites use a reputable source to base prices off of.

Yes, I plan to setup a FAQ page.

Currently we use Coindesk price index in order to calculate the FIAT value.

No, currently it is not real time. In future we plan to implement a socket which will let you analyze in real time. The lightning network itself is being updated continuously,  it is live.

The private node is the one which has chosen not to broadcast its IP outside. Actually, we will make a few tweaks to explicitly show whether the node is public or not, and show the closed channels as well.

Upd. Nodes GEO stats has been added: https://lightblock.me/lightning-network-stats/countries-chart

Thanks for your response! Yeah, the value of the information would be much, much higher just be enabling real-time (or at least minutes of delay) information.

Really would like info on closed channels - duration they were open and amount (I don't suppose they'll show volume as well?)

GEO chart = awesome! Just strange I didn't find any private nodes listed. As suspected, not much Chinese support for Lightning (those 5 could even be from Hong Kong and Taiwan otherwise), equal to the nodes from Singapore in fact. A few other surprises... and almost half in N America alone. Five dropped out too.

We have already started to indicate whether the channel is active or closed (it can have some minor glitches though, working on it). We have also added the "channel age".
