I personally dislike hardware wallets because I believe that in order to use bitcoin, you should not "pay" anything (ie. purchase a wallet device) but I can see their appeal.

This is why I personally believe that the best way is to use paper wallets.

Cons:
-- You have to find a good keypair generator that allow a strong entropy
-- You see the private key at some point
-- Weak support

Seeing the private keys is not a con. Remember this is your money that you are giving away (not selling) for it to be categorized as con. In fact you should keep a backup of that mnemonic (the keys you gave away) for the future. In case they lost the paper wallet so that those coins are not lost forever.

Oooof man, we don't have the same definition of "giving away money".
If you give away some sats, keeping a backup of the seedphrase is a bad practice. My 2 sats of course.

I gave some hundreds thousand satoshis to two of my brothers a few years ago. I explained the big picture without telling the details but I asked them to hold for a few years. Now, they are shocked seeing the value of the Bitcoin  in their wallet which was increased so high than the first time I gave them.

That makes them realize that Bitcoin can be more valuable in the future. I see they now add more satoshis to their wallet after Bitcoin hit $80k and with other coins. That is their choice but they are asking me if they don't understand. So the best way is you help them install a Bitcoin wallet, best is electrum on their phone, send some satoshis to them and say that they must keep it for a long time and let it be.

YEAH MAN! That's the idea. Orange pill them softly and let them realize to power of Bitcoin against inflation!  Cheesy

Why not surprise your loved ones with the gift of Bitcoin 🎁?
The idea is not bad, but not all your loved ones will totally appreciate receiving bitcoins from you this season because they don't know the value, and now is not the time to gift people bitcoin who will never appreciate it because bitcoin is becoming more important by the day—what you should be seeking ways to get more, not what you should be reducing what you have. For your action of gifting Bitcoin to be appreciated and not undervalued, you have to make sure that your loved ones really understand the value of what you're giving them so that they not just cherish it but also commit to keeping it secure and safe.

The question now is, do your loved ones know what bitcoin is and the value it has? If they don't, that is the first role you need to play.

The concept is that they receive a physical gift (a tangible item) with a special surprise inside. While some people may opt to give cash as a gift, which is perfectly fine, I personally prefer giving Bitcoin to my loved ones.
And I’m sure for those of us here in the forum, our families are already on board with the idea of Bitcoin, right?

This unique idea might raise a few questions, since Bitcoin isn’t a physical asset:

How can you gift Bitcoin as easily as handing over cash?
This is impossible. Because how can you convey something that does not exist in principle (physically)?

Of course it's possible. Just load the private key on a physical device and you have some physical Bitcoin, like the Casascius or Lealana ones.  Grin

How can you gift Bitcoin as easily as handing over cash?

I get in some of your answers and they are helpful, but we may also have to consider the coin in question, bitcoin may not be treated exactly the same way as physical fiat or cash, because its entirely digital, therefore we may only adopt any means that can help the targeted recipient find it interesting to receive bitcoin as Christmas gift in physical, maybe we can dive into the Casascius bitcoin and the like which are physical bitcoin and other requests like that of the use of paper wallet for gifting bitcoin and solving of puzzles to get reward in bitcoin on users bitcoin address and many more.

How can you share Bitcoin with someone who may not be familiar with this technology?

We may first need to share them with the idea of bitcoin and they have to understand what  bitcoin is and how they can make use of it, this will make them not to receive bitcoin and then later lose it for not been aware of some certain things about handling it, when we gift them, we should be ready to teach them, or we teach before we gift them bitcoin.

I really like the idea of a puzzle—solving it to access the funds sounds both fun and engaging. A seed phrase puzzle could be a unique twist!
However, it raises an important question about trust. If I know the seed phrase, how can the recipient fully trust me? After all, Bitcoin is built on the principle of trustlessness, right?
I still love the concept, though. It’s creative and intriguing, and I’m definitely going to explore it further!

Very easy mate if you want to give someone Bitcoin you ask them for their Bitcoin wallet address or if it's a surprise you find a way to get their wallet address and send them the Bitcoin and if there aren't yet into Bitcoin you talk to them about it help them to understand what Bitcoin is all about, help them set up a wallet address and then you can gift them Bitcoin. Gifting Bitcoin should not be complicated.

If you’re trying to introduce someone to Bitcoin, chances are they don’t have a wallet yet. Don’t immediately ask them to download one. The moment they see they need to back up a seed phrase—or risk losing their funds—they’re likely to close the app. Speaking from experience here.
I’m looking for something reliable, user-friendly even for beginners, and reasonably priced.

Hi everyone,

The festive season is here! 🎄
Why not surprise your loved ones with the gift of Bitcoin 🎁?

This unique idea might raise a few questions, since Bitcoin isn’t a physical asset:

How can you gift Bitcoin as easily as handing over cash?
How can you ensure the gift doesn’t rely on a trusted third party (no seed phrases, no PIN codes...)?
How can you share Bitcoin with someone who may not be familiar with this technology?

Here are a few simple solutions:

- the good old paper wallet - require you to have an offline computer, a paper wallet generator (preferably not corrupted  Grin) and a printer

Pros:
-- Free
-- Easy to do

Cons:
-- You have to find a good keypair generator that allow a strong entropy
-- You see the private key at some point
-- Weak support

- the original Opendime

Pros:
-- Easy to setup
-- Reliable - I'd like it to be 100% open source

Cons:
-- Must be destroyed to reveal the private key - so the gift does'nt exist anymore...
-- The support is a bit geeky
-- No mobile option - can only be used on a computer

- the evolved Satscard

Pros:
-- Easy to setup
-- Reliable - I'd like it to be 100% open source
-- The card form factor is a plus!

Cons:
-- Can only be used 10 times

- the new disruptive Satodime

Pros:
-- Easy to setup
-- 100% open source, that's a very good point
-- The card form factor is a plus!
-- Can be re-used forever
-- Mobile and desktop support

Cons:
-- Look like it supports shitcoins

What do you think about this topic? How will you give the gift of Bitcoin this Christmas?

Any thoughts on this product?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nwMteSphmro

I like the fact that it's based on a smartcard cuz' this is long lasting.
Less electronics is also a good point when it comes to take your secrets for the long run.

When it comes to inheritance, planning ahead is crucial. Life is unpredictable, and no one knows when they might pass away. If someone owns a large amount of Bitcoin and doesn't inform their family, they might be left unaware of the assets.

To avoid this, it's good to share information about your Bitcoin holdings with someone you trust. This could be a family member, such as a spouse or child. However, choose wisely, as this is a serious decision.Only share necessary information, and do so in person, rather than online. By planning ahead and sharing this information with a trusted individual, you can ensure your Bitcoin holdings are managed according to your wishes.

Indeed, the best remains the anticipation. No need to have huge amount of Bitcoin as we can't predict the price for the upcoming years.

But I disagree about informing people around you about your Bitcoin holdings; no need to tell them. You just have to teach them what Bitcoin is and how great it is... Optionally teach them how to use a S/HW wallet and the best practice regarding the seedphrases.
But don't tell them how much Bitcoin you have - bad practice imho.

#Bitcoin and inheritance: how to solve the dilemma?
by
LiskPro.com
on 04/12/2024, 08:17:16 UTC
Hi,

I was wondering how to solve the inheritance problem regarding my BTCcorn' stash:

- How can I pass on my wallet to my children without compromising security?
- How can I do this without trusting a third party?
- How can I be sure that the solution in place will outlast me?
- How can I do this without spending too much money - because I prefer grain BTCcorn'.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to explore with you a few solutions, their pros and cons:

- Metal plate:
Pros:
-- Long lasting
-- Fireproof
-- Weather proof

Cons:
-- Written in plaintext
-- Cannot be easily duplicated
-- Costly

- Paper:
Pros:
-- Easy to setup
-- Free

Cons:
-- Risky because you can make multiple typing errors
-- Not long lasting
-- Weak support

- Encrypted USB stick:
Pros:
-- Easy to setup
-- Long lasting and robust

Cons:
-- Costly, especially if you want to make multiple backup
-- Will it still work in 20yrs?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This video gives some tips but I can't find the best solution... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvRZ0PjZuH0

I also came across this one about a smart card called Seedkeeper: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-5Z9WN3r9o
What do you think of it?

Do you have any other solution in mind that we can discuss to update this thread?  Smiley

Hello,

I would like to submit my BitcoinTalk 10th anniversary contribution.
This is a very specific design of our Bitcoin hardware wallet!

Will you spot the Bitcoin history?

- The Times - Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks.

- A Pizza - For Laszlo's famous 10k BTC pizzas.

- The SilkRoad camel walking on the war field.

- Wikileaks logo for beeing among the first to use and accept Bitcoin.

- A famous quote reagarding the hack of a famous smart contract.

Thanks to this forum, we have access to the full Bitcoin and cryptosphere history!
We have tried to make a quick overview of BitcoinTalk to celebrate its 10th anniversary!

So I would like to thank you all for this great community and great history! Happy birthday!

------------------------------------------

If we win this contest, we will produce this limited edition card and offer it to the BitcoinTalk forum community.

A few words about Satochip:
We have built an open-source hardware wallet that runs on a smartcard.
So far, we support Bitcoin (with Electrum), Bitcoin Cash (with Electron Cash) and Litecoin (with Electrum Litecoin).
The Satochip hardware wallet has full BIP32 support and also supports the import of regular (non-BIP32 keys) such as vanity keys.
Even more, private keys cannot be exported outside of the secure chip.

Please, if this topic is in the wrong channel, let me know ...

The Concrete Jungle Foundation
Needs you!

In response to local demand, the Freedom Skatepark Project aims to support at-risk youth and the existing skateboarding community in Jamaica by:
- Constructing the Kingston's first public skatepark, free of charge to the community
- Supporting at-risk youth through CJF's skateboarding-based youth programme, Edu-Skate*
- Providing complementary skateboarding and safety equipment on-site

*The Edu-Skate Programme is a skateboarding-based youth intervention that uses skateboarding as a tool for personal development and life-skills, and works to promote community leadership and engagement. It is the central aspect of the Freedom Skatepark Project.

Based on our previous projects in Peru and Angola, our expected reach is the following:
- 280 children per year
- almost 3k children impacted by 2029 !

Quote
"Life skills training can prevent violence against children by enhancing their communication, conflict management and problem solving sills, and assisting them to build positive peer-to-peer relationships."

You can help by donating some Bitcoin to support this great initiative. Take some time to spend some BTC dust... It will be good for your karma, good for the project and helpful for all those kids !
