Re: How much have you lost for bitcoin just because of stupid
by

I had been hodling my BTC since I bought in at $24 per back in 2013. No selling off, no weak hands. Buying in was just a very lucky move rather than any great insight.

However, six weeks ago at the beginning of November I was seduced by the talk and the prevailing sentiment of a coming "flippening" over on r/btc. Consequently, when the price of Bitcoin began to drop, I was foolish enough to believe that the r/btc guys might be correct -- that the future would be Bcash and that legacy Bitcoin was heading into a death spiral. I sold all my Bitcoin at $5,600, and bought Bcash at $2,400. Double whammied.

I have decimated my assets by a very considerable amount by listening to a bunch of shills and fools -- some of whom I now realize to have had a devious agenda. I am now preparing to sell this Bcash at $1440 and buying back into the real Bitcoin at $12,500. I cannot believe that I have been such a clown, and am feeling quite butthurt about my idiocy. I have destroyed my wealth by listening to fools.

I post this only as a cautionary tale to anyone else who might be duped and deluded by the counsel and "advice" over at that toxic dump that is r/btc.

Re: Is bitcoin dangerous ?
by

If you are talking about the volatility of the coin itself, then yes, it's dangerous. The reason is that it is way too easy for one side of the equation (buyers or sellers) to outweigh the other side. Once more people adopt cryptocurrency use into their daily activities, the price will stabilize more and more.
Recently, we've been seeing a very stable Bitcoin price until the last couple of weeks. The majority of people that postulate on Crypto are saying that large scale companies accepting Bitcoin are cashing out immediately rather than keeping the coin, which is causing the price to slowly go downwards.

More people will get in and put money into the system. As they do, the price will stabilize yet again.  You can watch the trends and it's really really interesting.

As an investor, now is a good time to get in because companies selling items for Bitcoin, especially when they are at a discount, will cause consumers to jump on board which will in turn raise the price again.

So now if one is considering buying bitcoins and saving for his/her children in the future is there any way to do that with bitcoins apart from having to write down your details somewhere. I'm asking because with that kind of stuff if no one knows your seeds or password no one can get the coins.

Re: Bitcoin gambling as investment?
by

Yes.

Gambling because:

Your correct point about the price being speculative. It’s not a stock where you can do analysis on the strength of the company and decide what you are comfortable paying for it.
A lot of the trading essentially requires you to have trust in an exchange that is built by others (some are reputable and trustworthy), but it’s not the same as investing in the stock market or any other financial instrument that is legal. This is high risk, it does feel a little like throwing your money in a basement dog fight or something where you have no idea who the bookies are and it’s your first time there and everyone around you looks sketchy.

Re: Am I late ?
by

It’s definitely not too late to purchase Bitcoin. Everybody thought they were too late at $100, $500, $1000, $5000, $10,000, and now almost $20,000.

Bitcoin is only owned by less than 5 million people worldwide and still has tremendous growth potential.

The futures trading is coming on December 18th and will help this market begin to mature and many expect it to cause a significant rise in price of Bitcoin.

Nobody knows the answer for sure but it’s worth researching and getting into with a small amount of money that you can afford to lose.

Additionally, there are over 1,000 “Altcoins” that are just starting to get more popular. For example we saw Cardano rise by over 600% just this week and this is only one of many.

These Altcoins will continue to rise as more and more people catch on and if you can get in now you will see very large gains on your investment.

Of course it’s important to always do your own research and only invest in companies/coins that you believe in and HODL them. (HODL means to Hold on for dear life)

I would highly recommend start watching youtube videos, reading reddit, and joining facebook groups to begin learning as much as possibly about crypto as there is a lot to learn and you could lose a lot of money without proper knowledge.

If you are interested in joining a facebook group that I just started for cryptocurrency investors you are more than welcome to join.

I am trying to create a community of like-minded people that are passionate about investing in crypto and will be made up of both new investors and long-term professionals.

Re: Bitcoin Could be hack?
by
Masonwilliam
on 24/01/2018, 12:52:33 UTC
issue of security has been a fundamental one for bitcoin since its development. On one hand, bitcoin itself is very difficult to hack, and that is largely due to the blockchain technology which supports it. As blockchain is constantly being reviewed by bitcoin users, hacks are unlikely. On the other hand, though, the fact that bitcoin itself is difficult to hack does not mean that it's necessarily a safe investment. There does exist potential for security risks at various stages of the trading process.

USE COINMARKETCAP
Coinmarketcap is a website you can use to check on all the current crypto currencies. It lists them out by current market cap and has information such as; circulating supply, total market cap, 24h change, info on where to buy the currency and much more. If you are new to crypto and simply want to invest then look at the top 10 or top 20 coins, research the project and make your own decision. If you are trading then you may want to dig a little deeper into each project

Re: Tax on Trading Altcoins with Bitcoins?
by
Masonwilliam
on 24/01/2018, 10:34:24 UTC
we are trading Bitcoin and other “convertible” digital currencies on an exchange such a Poloniex or Bitrex. With the guidance issued under IR-2014-36, the IRS has effectively classified the exchange of “convertible” virtual currencies as a trade of one property for another property. This exchange would be viewed as a barter of one fairly valued property for another fairly valued property and would be subject to barter rules.

As a general rule, any time property is either sold for USD or exchanged for another property in a barter transaction (such as Bitcoin for other convertible digital currency in this case), a tax event has occurred. It requires and individual to compute the quantity (USD value) and the nature (long term or short term) of the capital gain or loss at the point of sale or exchange of the property. If you are looking for more detailed insight on how to calculate capital gains and losses, please see my earlier post US Tax Considerations When Blogging for Magic Internet Money (Part II). However, certain types of property exchanges permit the capital gains tax to be deferred until a later period when one disposes the property through sale or exchange for a different property.

Re: Why China is always bad news for bitcoin?
by

on 24/01/2018, 06:32:39 UTC
Because virtual currency has no borders, cross-border payments through virtual currency can avoid foreign exchange controls, and there is a greater need to guard against such anonymous transactions for countries and economies where capital projects are not fully open.so china is always bad news for bitcoin

Re: Do Banks fear cryptocurrency
by
Masonwilliam
on 24/01/2018, 06:18:45 UTC
I talk to a whole lot of bankers everyday, and I've yet to really come across a Bank/Banker that fears Bitcoin.

Most of the bankers are oblivious about Bitcoin and how as they put it the whole Bitcoin economy works. Scanty knowledge is prevalent amongst bankers. Very few really understand how the Blockchain works and what it means for bankers.

Fear would be a wrong word. I think they don't view it as a threat so much (do remember, there is much more to banking than just what exists in the US), there are 220 countries and territories that have banks. Cumulative popular opinion is that bitcoin, at present is not a threat. It might be interesting, but not a threat, and nothing to fear.

I feel, complacency is the right word.
