I'm not really up on the qrk team as it stands ....

Who have we got here

I know about

max - creator and still involved?
vic -
cryptovation -

who else is there? I never use slack so would like to have a list of the most active quarkers here so I know who is who

we have a new developer, his name is Speca, a professional coder currently working on updating Quark to the latest bitcoin core.

I am also onboard working with Cryotovation and Speca.
Concerning Max, Cryptovation and I along with many others feel he has had more than his chance to do the right thing by quark, but instead has failed it. We are putting together a team now, so will keep you updated. Quark needs a fresh start away from its past and creator the mysterious unknown Max. The quark community deserves a new team that is transparent, honest and dedicated to the project.

I kind of agree on max although he has done some things of late he is far too slack to be considered the lead coder on the project. Else we will be at 100 sats for years.

Although having said that he obviously can code and could still help if he wanted. Up to him really - come on start helping and contributing on the thread or i guess ...not.

Can speca tell me is it not possible to fork something like PIVx? which is kind of the thing we are going for? or do we have to design and code all of this from scratch ourselves and is this something he can do?

It is possible to fork pivx and it is still an option for the community. This is basically what cryptovation put forward to the community and so organized to be done by Alex and team. It ended up very different, Max should explain.

Developers were paid to do a PoS upgrade, I recommended using Peercoin as a base, someone decided instead to use a buggy PivX masternode/PoS implementation as a base. The masternode code was far from working, PoS was tested by the community and me, major bugs were reported. No fixes were done by the developers, so it was wasted effort at the end of the day.

Max it would have been very helpful if you had of been more engaged and communicative during our engaging Alex and team. My question to you Max why did you not communicate with Alex and team about using Peercoin as a base and why was it that I only heard about this after Alex and team had already worked with PIVx??

FUD. In my very first message to alex i specified we would like it to be based of Peercoin implementation.

Max can you explain why pivX is doing so well if it is all buggy?

I am trying to understand why we are not forking pivx since it has the features we want?

Also good you are active to respond to things on this thread.

All we all want hopefully is the best for quarks future. I hope you and speca can work together and that the entire team can get along.

Will you be able to dedicate more time to quark also can you please buy up a huge chunk of quark now it is worthless so you can have enough financial motivation to get full on with developing or helping developing quark.

My opinion of you is what i said. QRk was a fair launch without any premine so you never got enough financial incentive to work much on this project is that a fair assessment or not?

Also are you open to working with other coders on this project and having a team rather than a one person does everything type situation?

Just want to have open discussion about this because I am still buying up quark at this time.

Lastly can you quickly explain why just forking straight off of pivx latest build is not the best move here?

What was the talking about  quantum resistant and how realistic is this coming to fruition in the near future.

I don't know for sure but i sense there is 2 directions that is threating to pull quarks manpower in half. Be good to resolve this even if by community decision so that we can unite and work in one direction.

Porting over a bunch of complicated features at once is a sure fire way to break lots of things. Trying to implement two big projects like Masternodes and PoS at once is not very prudent. A phased approach where each feature is added and thoroughly reviewed and tested is the way to go. PivX is on a different code base from Quark, this complicates matters. PivX also has an old modified PoS implementation that's different from Peercoin.

I have always been open to work with other developers, but personally I only have time for code review and testing at this stage.

Yes, I am still around, in fact I did a code base upgrade six months ago. Despite all the talk, I'm not seeing any working code contributions from anyone else.

I have upgraded the wallets (v0.10.4.2 64 bit).
I have just noticed that I have found a block from the pop out window. However, the available and pending balance are still 0!
Any reason?

I haven't seen this myself. Make sure the blockchain is downloaded before starting mining. Maybe you can post an extract from your debug.log when this happens again.

The blockchain is up-to-date.
Extract from debug.log attached.

Looks like you were mining on an invalid chain. Sometimes when the wallet says its synchronized it still needs a few minutes to get in sync. I'll see if I can find the source of this issue.

Thanks for all the input and offers of support.

Many ideas have been floated here, most of them good. We will have to prioritize what is most important for Quark at this stage.

My feeling is that some kind of POS/POW hybrid would improve the security of the network and should be the first priority.

I would like to focus my time on investigation the technical issues with the different POS implementations before going ahead.

I also support some other ideas bought up here like on-chain governance and master nodes, but this could be next steps.

There are many ways to contribute so please post your ideas here or in slack.

That is a complete fabrication. I have never asked to get paid to work on Quark.

BlockNet sounds like an interesting idea.

I would however like to see more concrete specifications and implementations before I can comment on whether it can be incorporated into Quark.

Quark 0.9.2 Test4 available

This release adds Quark mining and the mining UI settings to the Quark 0.9.2 core.

The built-in miner has been tested and the wallet has also been tested with the sgminer GPU miner.

If no major issues are found in this release then this should be the final 0.9.2 test release before this branch is merged into the main Quark branch.

Thanks for all the feedback received from testers.

Note: Remember to backup your Quark wallet and data directories before updating.

I looked at some code of x11, x13, x15 coins, and I can say this code is often based on bitcoin 0.6.x or similar. It is very hard for me to compile on Windows.

Latest official version of Quark is based on bitcoin 0.8.3.x and can be compiled very easy compiled on Windows. Same for Litecoin 0.8.x.

Newest next version of Quark will be based on bitcoin v0.9.x.x and already now you can compile for Windows at the easiest way.

I am very close to conclude that many x11, x13, x15 coins are improved with many fancy things, but they are based on very old bitcoin code v0.6.x no matter how they artificially risen version number. It means it will be very hard to maintain it or developed it on the right way.

I am fresh in researching this.

Can someone confirm me if I am right?   For Windows only.

Thanks for recognising this.

The Bitcoin 0.9.x code base is much cleaner and easier to work with as a developer than for example 0.6.x.

A lot of changes has gone into "the insides" for Bitcoin 0.9.x and this is not always apparent to end users.

This is why my current priority is to upgrade the code base to Bitcoin 0.9.x. Few people seem to recognise that this is a big undertaking, especially with a coin like Quark that has many deviations from the Bitcoin code base.

The current code is here: http://github.com/MaxGuevara/quark092

It is close to being ready for merging into the main Quark code base.

Probably due to bugs in boost_1_56_0 i can't compile Quark v0.8.3 wallet nor Bitcoin v0.9.2.1 wallet with that version of boost.

from:
  boost_1_56_0/interprocess/errors.hpp:37:0
  boost_1_56_0/interprocess/exceptions.hpp:20,
  boost_1_56_0/interprocess/file_lock.hpp:20,
  init.cpp:36,

problem is here:
  boost_1_56_0/interprocess/detail/win32_api.hpp:1614:20
  boost_1_56_0/interprocess/detail/win32_api.hpp:1541:31

  return FunctionAdresses[id] ;

Is there some configuration solution?

The latest windows versions were built with boost 1.55. There might be something in 1.56 that broke compatibility.

Awesome thanks Max!

Can you explain more on this new feature? Does my CPU mine automatically when i open the wallet? I can see that my CPU is using 25% now the wallet is open, pretty cool. I didn't select how many threads though, how many threads is 25% CPU usage?

By default it uses 1 thread, so you probably have 4 cores on your machine.

This thread runs at a low priority, so it shouldn't affect other processes on your machine.

Under Settings (the drop down menu) you select how much CPU to use on mining. If you have 4 cores and select 4 threads, it will attempt to use all your CPU power.

Updated Windows wallet available - 0.8.3r18

huge change in the orphan rate since the new wallet app was released.

fork?

We're investigating - at this time, thanks a to a quick email from Max, there is NO FORK detected. I'll let him further confirm though.

Vic

No fork detected on this side. I checked several nodes running both the old and new version of the wallet/daemon and they are all in sync.

Quark has both hard-coded checkpoints and broadcast check-points to mitigate forks in the block-chain.

If anyone would like to double-check that they are on the correct chain:

Code:
getblockhash 716590
