Anyone remember that picture/meme of a crowd of friedcat fans holding up adoring signs and stuff? Can't find it. Good piece of history. Anyone have it? Thanks!

I miss Nagle, almost as much as I miss ElectricMucus. The trolls of today have nothing on them. ...

Ah, I remember ElectricMucus.

I haven't been very active here in the past couple years....how's kwukduck doing? Ardent bear since 2011, IIRC.

Bitcoin now looks like a mature technology. The software has settled down, there's been a modest level of merchant adoption, the transaction rate hasn't increased all that much over the last six months, and the legal status has become clear. The mining side is running into power consumption cost as a limit. Bitcoin isn't a new thing any more.

With Bitcoin out of its startup phase, what happens now?  It's starting to look like a niche product, positioned somewhat like gift cards. There are a number of pseudo-currencies like that - airline frequent flyer miles, all those "reward point" schemes, and the big array of prepaid cards available at retail outlets. They're just little convenience things; they have no significant impact on the financial system. It looks like that's where Bitcoin is settling.

John, you've been consistently wrong analyzing bitcoin's ecosystem and long-term prospects for years. Aggressively wrong, in fact:

Is now good?

Or maybe now. Another +1000%. Where'd Nagle go?

ASIC resistance has always been a bit of a joke. I remember chuckling over the hype back in 2014 or 2015.  Cheesy

Yup. This has been obvious since the beginning.

I registered here a couple weeks after that conversation. Vaguely remember checking out the forums a month or two prior on the old domain.

Good times. I miss the early(er) days.

LOL @ bitcoin is not a speculation vehicle.

95%+ of bitcoins are held by speculators.  You guys should go buy gold with the rest of your money so that you can lose another 90% of your value over the next three years.

How does it feel getting slowly wiped out guys?  Good?  I wouldn't know.

Bump.

Are you currently putting all your money into bitcoin?  If you say this, you show you believe it by your actions.  I am putting all my money into bitcoin - I see a possibility of $50-$100+ per coin this year.  Just think, once the "bankers" and hedge funds find out about this, we are going to the moon.  Once my bitcoins are $1,000+ I will be able to pay off my growing college loans and maybe get an apartment, and my first car Smiley

What a dream? see this guy was talking just like a year ago and now see his dream turned to reality. Smiley
even faster than 1 year. I bought bitcoin when dump before fork last month about $ 2500 and I still hold it if I sell it now I can earn about $800- $1000 for 1 month. this is my lucky moment I plan to sell it this week if bitcoin does not show a price increase.

Yeah, right...  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes  Come to this thread and talk about selling and getting some kind of mediocre short-term profits,  Roll Eyes Roll Eyes when I believe part of the lesson of this thread, should be, to hodl and accumulate BTC rather than thinking about cashing out for some mediocre amount of fiat profits.. ...

Accordingly, if you hodl and accumulate BTC, then it becomes much more likely that you can become part of "the new wealthy elite, gentlemen", and don't you want that?Huh   What is a better investment?  Where you going to put it, if not BTC?

$10k-$40k is probably the target, and will probably be stable for a while. That's a marketcap of about $200B - $750B, roughly akin to the world's biggest companies.

But I think >$10k is unlikely until after 2020. That said, back in 2011/12, I thought $1000 was many years away, so what do I know.

Incredible that kwuk still has the stamina to post here after all these years. Being a 2010 bitcoiner, and having sold out orders of magnitude ago, must be a terrible feeling.

OP is long gone now... I wonder what was his actual nickname. For some reason his account was deleted. I remember hearing the story about it a long time ago and it was interesting... pretty much an story of going from rach to riches then disappearing.  I think he did the right thing, considering that back in the day the community was very small and it would have been easier to track his money. If he was a very early adoptor he must have tons of money by now, a millionaire for sure. I dont have that problem since im poor, but if I was rich I would have done the same.

You can still see his real name in the quotes on the first page:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=12156.msg169765#msg169765

It was Atlas, he was quite a character... those were the days ;-)

Yup. I miss 2011/12, despite all the scams and crazy looks I'd get from respectable people when I mentioned bitcoin to them. Smiley

still ain't too pretty though. and if you'd paid a big premium then you'd feel a little sore. i wonder if casascius coins are gonna make a comeback. they seem a little quiet right now.

Yeah, they may be ugly, but as collectibles they have a bunch going for them:
1) They are hugely recognizable, thanks to being on the cover a hundreds of Bitcoin related articles over the years.
2) They are directly associated with Bitcoin's rise/history given the 2011 issue date and #1 above.
3) Mintage, of both types, was quite low.
4) Given that the stored value is high, a large percentage were redeemed.

I believe there are various now-desirable government-issue coins and so forth that were considered ugly in their day, and as such, did not become sought-after collectibles quickly, but when they did, they were especially scarce and valuable. We'll see.

As to the broader question of Casascius collectibility, it'll be interesting. If/when goldbugs really start to "see the light" and flood into Bitcoin, I can see Casascius coins getting a huge premium bump. Those guys love coins, and no other coin will ever be as quintessentially bitcoin as a Casascius issue.
