I heard something that all the new platform coins, or new wallet (stratis code base) are currently with the dev team? Are you guys not using third party escrow anymore? You're currently holding more than double what the previous guy did in the previous chain in addition to all the coins that have been reserved for the on going swap?

That's a million coins for the swap and about 200k for dev fund and bounties?

The problem with private planes are not the planes themselves, but you need to always fly with a full tank of gas all the time.

Wow! I can't believe it. It seems that you are only posting just for fun. I've never seen a member like you before — a member which doesn't attracted by the opportunity offered by signature campaigns. Now I believe that it's really possible to go here with only pure intentions of learning

It takes awhile to rank up, maybe at that point the incentive might be good enough or not, it really depends on how you value your time and if you are already gainfully employed or earning coin elsewhere. So yeah, for now this is fun and it is also fun to watch others gain activity, merits and rank. It's like compound interest. It goes up slowly over the weeks, months, years.

That is so awesome. 10 years ago today. Can you imagine what the next 10 years will be. I certainly can't, but as someone else said "Past performance is no guarantee of the future, but they tend to rhyme."

For long term storage and HODL, just buy bitcoin, don't buy anything else. If you do any short term trading or are relatively active and know the risks, you can try the other altcoins, but normally you'd get BTC first.

The old SwC was a good poker site that accepted bitcoin. I'm not so sure about the new one, but should be handled by a good team since they took over the brand.

If you're just looking to play for free, there are a bunch of apps that do have a good reputation like pokerstars and fresh deck poker.

If you haven't changed your password here in Bitcointalk since around May 2015, you should change it. Make sure it is random and secure and longer than 12 characters.

Can't wait for this. This would be another factor that will drive LN adoption higher as there are plenty already using this particular wallet.

If you are in Europe, I think it is safe to say that you can get an account on Bitstamp. They are one of the oldest exchanges on the planet and sometimes used as a reference point. They mostly trade bitcoin and fiat, something like only a dozen trade pairs, but that's really all you need to get started.

At least with an exchange, you don't have the problem of dealing with potential scammers. You do however, most likely, need to provide KYC info to them.

If the receiver uses an Android phone, I would recommend either the Bitcoin Wallet for Android, or Electrum Wallet for Android, both of which can be found on the Google Play Store.

They allow you to control your own private keys or seed word list, they both support segregated witness, and both are "light" wallets, the Bitcoin one uses SPV or Simple Payment Verification.

Additionally, you can use the same seed for your mobile device as well as on a desktop or laptop, if you use Electrum.

Re: Storing Bitcoin In Bitcoin Core wallet
by
MichaelX
on 04/10/2019, 14:14:55 UTC
Whats your opinions on storing bitcoins in the Bitcoin core wallet on a home PC with a strong password and regular malware scans?

Is the home PC being used for anything else?

If it's only purpose is for the Bitcoin Core wallet running, then I would say that is fine.

If it is used for anything else, connected to any other devices (except your network of course) like printers, running any games, running any browsers, running anything else other than the base operating system, then I would do some deep thinking on the attack surface.

It's possible you have maybe Bitcoin Core, and maybe another wallet like Armory or even Electrum running on that home PC.

But if you do any sort of browsing, no matter what kind of browser, even if it's the Tor Browser or just plain Firefox, and you do other stuff on it like search the internet or watch youtube videos or anything, then again, do some thinking on how you could possibly be attacked.

I understand cold storage. I understand air-gapped computers. I understand hardware wallets.

But if you have a cheap PC (and I do not mean a single board one, maybe a laptop with SSD) and all it has is just the OS and Bitcoin Core, I don't really see how your coins can get stolen unless you do something else entirely foolish and careless.

However, I also understand, that ties up an entire device for only one purpose. It's not practical. But I dare say, it's good practice if you intend on storing 4 or more figures worth of bitcoin.

More than 1 BTC but want an online wallet? Do your home PC, freshly formatted, get all updates (or disable all future updates), install Bitcoin Core, and that's all you use it for. Your coins are worth more than the hardware.

Pair that with a hardware wallet, so you basically you just run a full node at home, and it's probably the best of both worlds.

Samsung S10 and Note 10 are not on the list. That's good if you're on the latest phone. And it says Chrome or Chromium.

Another reason for you to download a different browser and use that by default, like Firefox for Android, or Firefox Focus. I'm not sure what renderer the Samsung Internet web browser uses.

I think there are some ATMs that print either private keys or QR codes of private keys ... maybe I'd try those once, but as others have said would not recommend them.

You can make your own paper wallets and fund them yourself. Besides, those other options would cost you more, or the rates they use would be much higher than you would like otherwise.

If your purpose is to give to friends, make nice paper wallets.

If your purpose is for your own personal cold storage, make your own paper wallet or make your own offline wallet using any of the recommended wallets; I personally use Bitcoin Core QT and Electrum. You can write down and back up the seeds or extended private keys.

You can pre-generate a few dozen addresses.

I would also test the first one or two with a little bit of some coin. Send to it. Redeem or sweep. Take note of how wallets work and if change addresses are used. When you are comfortable with the process, then you make brand new wallets.

In the past, there are simple wallet generators, some even do vanity type addresses (you can just do the first 1 or 2 letters to get the equivalent of any other address.) and I saw some other paper wallet generators that allow you to use dice or random files (take pictures) or any number of physical objects as sources of entropy.

I'd get the most modern implementation and use native segwit too. Legacy segwit is there for compatibility reasons, it wouldn't hurt to use them, but future fees could cost slightly more when sweeping or importing them. Not that much hopefully.

There is no reason to use legacy or uncompressed addresses anymore.

This is a modern form of a social engineering attack.

They fool you into downloading and running the trojan by posing as some authority or someone you know or trust.

The prudent thing to do is open a new browser window and type in some of the words that appear, to search for them, and see if you come up with anything.

If you really need some sort of functionality, it is better you look for it yourself. A good data wiper would be something known like Eraser, or to wipe the drive would be DBAN.

I don't use Chrome.
I don't use Google except for a personal Gmail account that has no other purpose.

I wouldn't want to save any passwords with Google, what if they are the ones that get hacked?

My personal tip, use a brand new email for every new website you need to create an account with, if they require an email address. You can easily make one even using gmail and any old android phone.

For passwords, well, everyone has a wallet right? My passwords look like bitcoin addresses or private keys. Use a password manager or even some notepad on your desktop.

I wouldn't worry about rank too much. My account is even older, but due to not posting, well, and just plain lurking and reading, nothing is happening.

As long as you post something worthwhile and meaningful, and do it from time to time (like once a week or something like that) then the rank and merits will come.

Wallets for phone include Bitcoin Wallet for Android and Electrum for Android.

For OTP generators, there is the official Google Authenticator, but I think that's bloatware and I use the FreeOTP one made by RedHat, it's also on the Play Store.

I don't know if there are equivalent apps for iphone / ios.

I also have my fiat banking apps on my phone, but it's really more to look at my balance when I use my accounts or cards. (debit cards, credit cards.)

I'm not sure he likes being called "thermos" but is probably used to it.

I registered a long time ago, but never really posted, just lurked all these years. But I figure I should contribute a little bit even if it's every few months or so.

After a while, people will start to see the ever revolving door of the perpetual scam that is "This is the next Bitcoin! Trust me!"
You severely underestimate the ... sensibilities of people. Even if only 1% of the world will fall prey, that's still 75 million of them out there.

If a million of them get smart every year, we are looking at 20 block reward halvings before the population of unsensible people are depleted.
