Re: If you're hoping for economic disaster to raise price, then you're not a "bull"

1. Depending on how it plays out,  it's not guaranteed that the price will rise. It might collapse instead.

I am fairly certain it is going to rise in the currency collapse scenario.

Restricting it to this one use case of capital flight is pretty narrow minded and an insult to bitcoin. A real bull would want bitcoin to succeed in its own merits.

Yeah, yeah. I do want it to succeed on its own merits, and I also want my dollar collapse.

3. The price would be much higher if bitcoin went mainstream in a thriving economy with government approval, rather than a negative environment with no spending and only storage. Things would be growing,  and money would circulate hundreds of times faster.

I see government collapse as an extremely positive scenario for the economy, longer term. This is based on my experience surviving the collapse of the USSR.
Economies don't thrive with government approval, they thrive despite of the government.

4. In the case of hyperinflation, the prices of goods is rising in tandem with the bitcoin rise and your actual wealth in terms of what goods you can buy isn't rising as much,  if there is even a supply at all.  Meanwhile your neighbors are suffering and starving.  Heck,  you might just starve too.

This would be very unfortunate, yes. However, it is also inevitable, and the sooner it happens, the less suffering it is going to inflict on the people.

5. You want to live in a negative and harsh world,  where everyone is unhappy and there isn't even anything fun to spend your coins on... If you can even find places to spend them because they're probably illegal. Nobodies quality of life is going up,  not even yours.  For any advantage due to your bitcoin wealth,  there is an equal and opposite disadvantage.

Nope, I have no intention of staying in a collapsing country. I'll find a place where it's going to be relatively calm.

6. If people get wind of your wealth,  they will hate you and your life is in danger.

True, so I won't be showing off too much, and would find a hobby which benefits my local community.

7. You literally want billions of people to suffer just so you can make a profit.  You're just like the capitalist pigs and the government and are against all the values that bitcoin stands for.  You are despicable.

"Capitalist pig" is a compliment. It means I am non-violent, and one with nature.
No, I do not want any people to suffer, but that is irrelevant. The people are going to suffer regardless, and the sooner this government Ponzi collapses, the sooner they switch to Bitcoin, the less they are going to suffer.

Politicians are making scary statements, scary economic data is being released, the dollar index is going down, gold and Bitcoin are going up. For how long this would continue, not sure. If it ends up with some kind of crash in the US, both gold and Bitcoin might rise significantly, in dollar terms. If the crisis at the emerging markets deepens instead, the dollar may go up again, gold and Bitcoin may go down.

At what price point do you hope to cash out at least 50% of your btc?

At no point.

I'll start slowly cashing out within 40% of my stash, when / if 40% of my stash is enough to comfortably retire.

Why aren't the Greeks and Russians buying?

Can't say anything for Greeks, but Russians are buying USD, because RUB is being inflated much faster than USD, so the majority of the people don't notice any USD inflation.

It would be even more fair not to shut down the Silk Road, and not to steal the customers' bitcoins.
They're going to come up with some justification to pocket the money.

The investors need an ETF anyway. For the common folks, there is Coinbase, there is also nothing wrong with buying on Bitstamp, or Bitfinex, or Kraken, or whatever. Just don't hold too much money on any exchange.

I think this might be the case, because taxes. Some people might sell whatever they have at a loss, near the end of the year, in order to reduce the capital gains tax, then re-buy it in the new year.

But I'm not a lawyer, maybe I don't understand things.

wasn't bitcoin banned in russia, i don't think they will ever move something in to it

There is a culture of not giving a shit about law in Russia, so they might, especially in case things go really bad, and Putin bans USD bank accounts.

This month's bear trap left many bears very frustrated... Some are so ashamed they avoid admitting their prediction failures here on this forum... They are going to post doom and gloom predictions, instead...

Setting up shop in essentially the same town as DPR got busted?

My thoughts exactly. It's like, the most dangerous place in the world for setting up this kind of business. The cost of living in CA is also outrageous, does not make too much sense to stay there if you are earning the income online.

Re: What do you think is the fundamental worth of bitcoin currently?
by
MonadTran
on 08/09/2014, 20:16:33 UTC
I believe the "fundamental" value of Bitcoin is technically 0, because there is nothing in principle that would prevent every single market participant from switching to Litecoin, or some other crypto.

Having said that, I still believe Bitcoin is currently undervalued.

it would seem awfully risky to put so much of a retirement fund in to such a volatile instrument.

It also depends on what size your retirement fund is. If it's $10,000, well, unless you invest most of it in a risky asset with high returns (like Bitcoin), you can be pretty damn sure you'll have to work yourself all the way into the grave. If you do invest in Bitcoin, there is still a good chance there would be no retirement for you, but at least there is some hope.

The real thing. Good find. Selling SR forfeited coins.

Then let the price drop as low as possible. The less money they get in exchange for their stolen coins, the better.

Let's just hope everyone finally starts buying.

Let's rather do something, or say something. I mentioned Bitcoin a couple of times to my co-workers, bought a Bitcoin T-shirt, now one of them owns one bitcoin. It's kind of not much, and it took some time to get the guy interested, but it's still something.

You know what, I actually figured out I don't care if people are bulls or bears. As long as they are on this forum, they are involved with Bitcoin, in one way or the other. The number of posts on bitcointalk.org seems to grow. More people are joining. If some bears sold their coins, but are still on this forum, guess what they are going to do with their USD? The most pessimistic scenario I can imagine is the price of bitcoin going down, and no bears on the forum. That might mean people are selling and leaving. I don't see this happening. Forum bears are fine. I love you, forum bears. There, I said it.

Re: US economy expected to crash, time to buy bitcoin
by

Economic collapse worse than the great depression as many predict. Sure, the most valuable assets will be food, fuel, ammo, and crypto.  Roll Eyes
not crypto

ammo yes, lots of ammo

if u don't have guns ur in trouble

In a true zombie apocalypse scenario I would go for vodka and fuel. As someone who's seen the collapse of the USSR, vodka is the way to go. Maybe whiskey, to account for local traditions Smiley Guns are only required for those who already have lots of whiskey and fuel, to protect those - or if you are planning to go on the offensive.
