It means you'll feel discomfort sitting down for the next few days.

Also means your order is done but not shipped per:

I'd love to see the numbers behind going with a watercooling solution vs. air cooling.  I've yet to see a setup gain enough performance from the difference to make up for the cost (both initial hardware/setup and ongoing).

Here in the US I'd know to never keep over 100k in a bank account, I think FDIC has been raised to 200k now since the financial crisis.  But why... oh why would you keep such a large amount in a single account?  The insurance is simply the cost of opening a few new free accounts.

Re: The bASIC Refund Tracking Thread
by
MonsterZero
on 27/02/2013, 21:32:43 UTC
From CablePair in Oct '12:

"And yes as of right now I still have an open refund policy. If you change your mind on your pre-order just send me an email and I will process the refund right away - only 2 people have done this since I began taking pre-orders on 09/03 - and believe me my other customers will be happy to have your order out of the way  Also while we are on that topic it is likely the refund policy will change when we go into production because I am going to have to spend a LOT of money to have these boards made (the bASIC order count around 700 as of right now) and I still have to finish paying back the investor that fronted the money to have the chips made. When the time gets close to start production of the boards - I will give a weeks notice on the change of refund policy so anyone that wants to change their mind will have enough time to do it, however just like ModMiner Quad owners are happy as hell with them - I know you guys are going to love this little device. It was engineers in California who are at the very top of their profession. This is a really special product and you guys are going to love it."

How much you want to bet the "investor" took no loss on this business venture and was paid back his investment before customers were paid back their money.  If there was really an investor and they weren't stupid they probably had a contract written up and it said something like, "If Tom is an idiot and can't get this done I have recourse to get my money back from his hide."  Maybe he even put his house up.

Re: Avalon batch#2 Re-open 2/18

Do anyone have answers to these questions:

- If a unit is damaged in transit and as a result of that or something is DOA, can it be exchanged for a new unit ?
- What if a unit just stops working after a couple weeks or months, is there any kind of guarantee offered?
- Is there insurance for shipping ?

Even though it wouldn't be all that profitable once arriving, it would still be interesting to own one. I could not however find
answers to my questions on their webpage.

I do not believe any return/warranty has been stated with batch #2.  If anyone has one for batch #2 they should post it so it's saved for the future.  Buyer beware.  Might want to also check how much it will cost you to ship 15kg to China, cause if there's a problem you'll at least be out that.

Day 24 after shipping: 12 x 24 = 288 units should have shipped by now.

You are incorrect

................ and everything will be clear then.
This includes also, that the other customers will know when they get their units?
Currently you would have sent about 108 units!

Ah actually, this is probably something I should update, the original plan is to assemble one and send one, of course this isn't working out, we currently have sent a batch of 53 to a different route, as it currently stands, this 53 has the biggest chance to make it out of the country, then we can attempt again if the news make it back to us before Feb 2. which is the deadline for getting things out of the country before CNY.

Honestly, this is probably something we underestimated and I'd like to personally apologize for having similarity with BFL, it is so pathetic. Then again though, since we did originally promise to ship everything out before Feb ends I don't really see a problem with this.

As for new information, we are still dealing with the custom issues I've previously mentioned, but Jeff should receive his units within this week, and everything will be clear then.

You seriously believe that shipping one unit to one customer will make you earn 750k$ in preorders? During the weekend, maybe?

Dude,
It is up to us. He has nothing to believe in. We are the ones to decide if he will get 750K or zero. From what i see here the answer is yes he will sell 500 batch in 20 mins max if the site does not hang:) Let me refresh your memory first batch 300 units was sold for less than 20 minutes or so even though Avalon was about three mounts behind from shipping compared to BTCFPGA and BFL promises

Couldn't have said it better myself, I'm writing up the batch #2 pre-sale thread right now.

BitSyncom, I recall reading where you paid $400 to get Jeff's unit to him.

Can I pay for the same service?  I have $400 in BTC ready to send.

They are shipping 12 a day since Jan 22.. thats roughly 264 sent already.. im sure you will have it in your hands soon.

That's not what they said actually.

^^^^  I agree, I would rather them focus their efforts on shipping Batch #1 and Batch #2 by their deadlines period.  He stated "no news is good news" as we need to take it at face value that they are on schedule and have focused their resources on meeting these goals.

you're not concerned about the 53 units they said they shipped out by January 28th?  At least 16 days in the mail now and not a peep.

If Tom's smart he knows he needs to be refunding the wire transfers... government authorities are going to get involved in a financial fraud of this scale and he's going to get in trouble.  Wire transfers are more risky than CC transactions but neither are anywhere near btc transfers and he may very well not have the intention to or ability to return those funds.

When calculating please remember these are bitcoins transacted when the value was much different, if those were still held in bitcoin now the value will be substantially higher.  Impossible for us to know of course? (Edit: Unless this were to come out in a trial, the damages could be substantially higher)

That entire heatsink on each card is saturated at 50C!  Holy hell on a crutch!

Are those IR pics accurate?  That seems excessive... if it actually is 40 - 50C, what's going to happen to them in hot weather?

Maybe Jeff can heat up a room to 85F or so and let it run to see what happens.
Is 50C really a problem? I had the impression that even 80C isn't a problem? My GPU is at 62C right now not doing anything. (FOSS Linux Radeon driver has no power management Sad)

Are there components on the board that might not be able to withstand >50C temperatures?

Remember that the hotter the heatsinks get the more heat they dissipate. Both by radiation but also by warming up the exhaust air more. If Jeff's room is 20C now and he heated it up to 35C I don't think we would see an increase to more than 60C, with the fans running at the same speed.

I know some computer components can run extremely hot.. what I'd be more concerned with high temperatures over long time periods is the lifespan of the device.  Just how long can these keep running at those temps... 3 months... 6 months.. 3 years?... Hopefully we won't find this out anytime soon Smiley

Re: BFL: Chips have shipped, on their way to US
by
MonsterZero
on 11/02/2013, 21:15:53 UTC

So if i bought one today, I am waiting untill November? bull shit... they better drop that price by $300 if they think I am waiting 7 months for delivery of the products.

MFG costs should go down as time continues, or the Machines should have considerably more hashing power, or Power efficiency a year later.
If you start off with a tiny 65nm process that is extremely densely packed...

You can't expect that a 45nm or 32nm product to cost the same or less. It has to cost more. The only way to bring down the price is at the cost of profit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_shrink

Die shrinks are popular among semiconductor companies, such as Intel, AMD (including the former ATI), NVIDIA, and Samsung for enriching their product lines. Examples in the 2000s include the codenamed Cedar Mill Pentium 4 processors (from 90 nm CMOS to 65 nm CMOS) and Penryn Core 2 processors (from 65 nm CMOS to 45 nm CMOS), the codenamed Brisbane Athlon 64 X2 processors (from 90 nm SOI to 65 nm SOI), and various generations of GPUs from both ATI and NVIDIA. In January 2010, Intel released Clarkdale Core i5 and Core i7 processors fabricated with a 32 nm process, down from a previous 45 nm process used in older iterations of the Nehalem processor microarchitecture.
Die shrinks are beneficial to end-users as shrinking a die reduces the current used by each transistor switching on or off in semiconductor devices while maintaining the same clock frequency of a chip, making a product with less power consumption (and thus less heat production), increased clock rate headroom, and lower prices.
The lower prices are due to mass volume production of other parts. Keep in mind BFL and Avalon are selling entire units. NOT single chips like those you cited.

They (AMD, Intel etc) also sell hundreds of millions of units (chips) so the NRE costs are a tiny fraction of the total cost. Scale <--- makes the price come down.

With ASIC's that is not the case. It is one batch for a few hundred people and only a number of wafers. (Up to a [low] multiple of 10,000 chips.)

(Note: For example, BFL only did 6 wafers for around ~6000~ ASIC chips in their first batch)

The cases and the rest of the components do not come down in price unless they establish a long term contract for the same parts. (in other words, not a single run)

This is basic economics of scale. It should be extremely obvious.

Interesting change of subject.  You were speaking about nm scale production costs.
You said "You can't expect that a 45nm or 32nm product to cost the same or less. It has to cost more. "
Which is incorrect.  It should be extremely obvious.
