Feel free to ask questions/comments Tongue

Have you worked out the very ~ lifetime ROI on this?

I ask this question as I am currently under the impression you will only get back a fraction of its costs (and would like to be convinced otherwise as I have cancelled a dedicated machine I had on order)

My previous calculations weren't correct. I hadn't realized the extent that the difficulty increase would cut into profits. I am canceling my order now Sad
But to answer your question, at 2 Ghash/s at $17

MonthBTCUSD
130.6$520.2
210.04$170.68
33.29$55.93
Total42.93$746.81

And with the $91.59/month in electricity costs, I'd be left with about $472.04. So finally after 3 months I'd still be -$1965.57.
This would be only marginally worse if I resold all of the hardware for 40% of their original value, $948.33. Then I'd be -$1017.24

I decided to look at it with a mining pool and this is what I found.

Current Round
Total Pool Ghash/s    1906.47
My Ghash/s              2
Pool Shares             201,669
My Share of Shares   211.6

Estimated Growth      45%
USD Rate                 $17

MonthPool $My Share
1$520,216.10$545.83
2$170,639.54$179.04
3$55,972.67$58.73
Total$746,828.31$783.60

Given this minuscule $36.79 increase, I'd still be -$980.45

Having seen these numbers, at this point in the mining game you'd be better off starting a mining pool to compete with the big ones. This particular pool, if charging a 2% use fee, would generate +$14,936.57 in 3 months!!!!

Now that's where the real money is at.

To make these calculations I used this calculator: http://striketeam.ath.cx/btccalc/btccalc.php
And I used the numbers from this mining pool: http://mining.bitcoin.cz/stats/

Check em' out!!!! They're both pretty cool Smiley

I have just purchased my first dedicated miner and now I'm am getting things setup so I can start mining as soon as possible. What I am not sure about is if I should use the latest version of Ubuntu (11.04), or an earlier version (such as 10.1). Any ideas? And I'm guessing Windows will just be slower, am I right?

I am about to purchase 3 Radeon HD 5970's, but I am unsure which manufacturer to go with. I found some really cheap refurb's from Visiontek, but I am concerned that maybe they aren't the best choice. Any recommendations?

Here is the link to that video card: http://www.unityelectronics.com/products/6428/Visiontek_Radeon_HD_5970_GFX_x16_PCI_E_PCI_Express_2GB_GDDR5_BBA_2560x1600_Video_Card_Dual_DVI_Mini_DVI_400579_Refurbished

I would go Sapphire, but only because theyre a good company and you can OC them pretty good.

Thanks Smiley Seems like almost everyone is out of stock Sad
I might be stuck with the Visiontek refurbs unless I can find someone with the card in stock that isn't $200 more per card Sad

Re: Are the CPU, Memory and Power Supply on this rig good enough for 3 x HD 5970?
by
NISMOkwim

As a sidenote:  Avoid Apevia power supplies across the board regardless.  They're well known for exploding and killing off everything connected to them.
If you want to be damn sure of getting a good power supply, Corsair doesn't make a single bad unit, and the top level Antec units are very good as well.
Other than those two companies, it's a good idea to google both the PSU manufacturer and the model itself and find a review, ideally a review at jonnyguru.com as they do a very, very good job of testing there.
Failing that, find someone else who did actual load tests, not just a plug it into some parts and check voltage output "load test".

If you're thinking about overclocking the 5970s you'll need over 300w per card, I would get a 1200w minimum.  Keep in mind that a fully loaded 1200w power supply will be drawing 1300w or more from the wall, you'll probably want a dedicated circuit for that computer as most house circuits are only capable of 1500-1800w.

Thanks for the heads up on Apevia. I really like the Corsair models as well... I'll stick with those I think.

As for wattage, if I wasn't overclocking, do you think a 1200Watt would be safe? And can you recommend a place to pickup a dedicated circuit?

id say you could stuff 4 cards in that board, but you will need some dummy vga plugs (google them) and if you would be putting 4 in there i would seriously consider going open case

I am considering doing the 4 then. 2 separate systems with 2 5970's each, is also a possible idea now. By open case, do you mean leaving doors off, fan full blast, or literally an open case design?

I just finished setting up 2 systems with 2 5970 each.
It ended up being cheaper than getting a mobo for 4 cards!
So I end up having a resilient mining set up with cheaper cpu's and stable performance.
I didn't overclock the cards much, just 825 mhz GPU / 1200mhz RAM.
Good luck

Etienne: Do you mind if ask what all is in your setup? I was looking at 3 systems running 3 x 5770's a piece, but at that point it seems easier to just bump up a card to the 5970 lol

Power supply won't be enough you need at least 1KW and a 1.2KW is recommendable. :/

Each card pulls a max of 300 watts for a total of 900 and you are still missing CPU, HDDs/SDDs, Optical Drives, USB Devices, Memory, and cooling(fans).

fabianhjr: Thanks man!!!! I've been looking for that sort of an answer haha If I was running the dual setup with only 2 cards each, do you think at 850? or even 750 would work?

its a good idea to knock 10-15% off the Mh numbers on that wiki page.  most are from extreme overclocks.

i have 4 mildly overclocked 6870  cards and all i can get out of them is 270 or so.

i am running the cards at 940 (stock is 900) core and the memory is not adjustable as far as i can tell, i can set it to 300 but at 100% load it shoots up to 1050 or something.

if i push my cards to 980 they crash, these are very well ventilated cards in an open 2 level case made from aluminum with with about 3" between the cards on the bottom level and 3" between the cards on the top level pulling cool air in one window and exhausting hot air out another window.  i have never been able to get them even close to 300Mh

Wow, so did you build your case, or is it from the shelf?

You said you're running 4 cards? Do you think that the MSI motherboard I've picked out can handle 4 5970's?

Are the CPU, Memory and Power Supply on this rig good enough for 3 x HD 5970?
by

AMD's website it calls for at least 1GB RAM to run the Radeon HD 5970, but since I am going to be running 3 of them, won't I need more than 1GB RAM? Will I need a better CPU?
Also, AMD calls for at least a 650Watt power supply, and calls for a 850Watt power supply if you plan to use ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode.

Here's the System Requirements from their website: (http://tinyurl.com/27vndvz)

  • PCI Express® based PC is required with one X16 lane graphics slot available on the motherboard
  • 650 Watt or greater power supply one 75W 6-pin and one 150W 8-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended (850 Watt with two 75W 6-pin and two 150W 8-pin connectors for ATI CrossFireX™ technology in dual mode)
  • Certified power supplies are recommended.  Refer to http://support.amd.com/us/certified/power-supplies/Pages/listing.aspx for a list of certified products
  • Minimum 1GB of system memory
  • Installation software requires CD-ROM drive
  • DVD playback requires DVD drive
  • Blu-ray™ playback requires Blu-ray drive
  • For an ATI CrossFireX™ system, a second ATI Radeon™ HD 5970 graphics card, an ATI CrossFireX Ready motherboard and one ATI CrossFireX Bridge Interconnect cable per graphics card (included) are required

Here is what I have in the setup currently:

ChassisAPEX PC-389-C Black Steel ATX Mid Tower$19.99http://tinyurl.com/n9x9ku
Power SupplyAPEVIA 650W ATX12V - Crossfire Ready$54.99http://tinyurl.com/3vq6r5k
MotherboardMSI 890FXA-GD70$175http://tinyurl.com/6y78afz
CPUAMD Sempron 130$29.99http://tinyurl.com/694lzzz

Graphics card    3 * Radeon HD 5970$1,800 ($600 × 3)    http://tinyurl.com/62hxqpl

TotalApproximate Mhashes 2011.1754$2,102 + s/h/t$1.082437 per Mhash

I'm concerned that the RAM/CPU aren't enough to handle 3 of the Radeon HD 5970's. And that they might need a bigger power supply. What do you guys think?

GPU is really the only thing that effects Mh/s, just go off that chart. Also take note that many values are from overclocking (clock speeds are shown on the chart).

fascistmuffin: I was looking at that chart earlier. Can I just add up the Mhash speeds? (ie speed x 3)

Really nice setup Smiley

You don't even need 30 GB, max you need is 7 GB,
You don't need that good of a CPU.
2 GB RAM? I'd probably only get 512 mb or 768.
You don't need 850 wawtts.
You don't need a badass case.

nofear1999: Are you sure about the SSD? I thought that might be the case also, but I wasn't quite sure. What would you recommend for SSD, CPU, and case? I am concerned about cooling, but i figure if all else fails I could always just put it all in an open from and point giant fans at it hahaha
Also, on AMD's website it calls for at least 1GB RAM to run the Radeon HD 5970. But since I am going to be running 3 of them, won't I need more than 1GB RAM? And a better CPU?

this made me lol, but I would agree. If i was building for mining, and mining only, I wouldn't spend on the extra.

iambean: Thanks for the second lol Is there anything on the PC that will bog down the GPU? Like if I have too slow of a CPU, couldn't that cause a kink in the system?

What do you guys all think of these modifications?

I am building my first miner and am looking at a few designs, a system with 3 x 6990, a system with 3 x 5970 and 3 systems with 3 x 5770.
I am having a hard time calculating the Mhash for this second system though.
Here are the parts.

Given this setup, what should I expect for Mhash?

Also feel free to make suggestions for dropping my $$$/Mhash, while still keeping the overall Mhash around 2000
