Re: Shared Ideas of Ways to Manage Heat From Mining in a Home or Warehouse
by
NateDoggETH
on 30/04/2018, 16:38:36 UTC
So here is what I currently have going on ...

31 GPU's ranging from 1070ti's to 1080ti's ... Six of them are XFX Vega 56 blower cards.  According to fan specs, we're doing 3100ish cfm on intake and exhaust in a room that is 1680 cubic feet.  There is another window in that room that I could put another intake fan in, not sure about that yet.  If I do that, I assume I'm going to need to put in another exhaust fan.  All rigs other than the vega blower card rig have a box fan behind them.

I'm wondering if I should move the shelving unit a little closer to the exhaust, so the heat is sucked directly upwards, but the box fans are pushing hot air off of the cards in a forward motion.  Not sure how much.

Currently the room is around 7-8 degrees above the outdoor temp.  Without the exhaust fan (and with the intake and box fans), it was 15-18 degrees above the outdoor temp, so it has certainly made a big difference.

Temps here are going to be heating up, so we will see what happens.  The next step in this project is venting all the way outside rather than into the attic.

If anyone has any suggestions on gable vents or roof vents that have fittings for a large diameter hose, please let me know.

That room looks sexy just like the OP mining set up.

If I had this set up, I would have the 2 windows with exhaust fans (attic gables fans) sucking hot air outside on boths windows and I would put that shelf with all the rigs on it right in front of it. So it would go like Cool Air--Rigs--Attics gable Fans sucking the hot air out.

I would keep the ceiling exhaust fan also just to make sure that there isn't any trapped hot air anywhere. You can never have to much exhaust. Just make sure you have a source for fresh air (does not have to be AC air but needs to be fresh)

Re: Building a mining shed. Next step is network setup. Need a switch 16 port????

So I'm looking at switches and if I get a 10/100 I can find 16 - 48 port models from 40 to 90 bucks that have good specs.  If I look at gigabit switches they start at 89 and go up from there.  For mining pc's do I need gigabit switches? Al my other switches and router in my house are gigabit switches. Also I have a strong wifi all ready on 256 bit.  I have a vpn with hardware firewall  monitoring all the mining systems.

Make sure u have a separate Ethernet line ran just in case something happens to your main line.

I have a shed also for my miners and I ran 2 shielded cat5 cables 175ft to my shield buildout. Works like a charm.

I just went with a basic 10/100 16port off amazon. Probably cost me $40 and have a WiFi router for when I’m by my pool now to.

Too late to rebrand "mining" to "network security" or "transaction validation". That would go into people's "good" mental category.

You know, I actually REALLY like this.  In the future when I talk to the uninformed about this I'm just going to start telling them I validate transactions on the Ethereum network.  It's far more descriptive, carries a positive connotation and it sounds way cooler.

-TBT

This is exactly how I tell people what I do that do not understand mining. Once I say that to them it’s like a light bulb goes off and they get it that much faster.

Yeah, nothing to stoke up the neophobic populace like the accusing people doing something new of being dangers to the community. All those data centers, it's ok for them to use electricity, because "cloud computing" sounds good. Hopefully efficiency will improve, but until then maybe we should just rebrand.  Undecided

You read the article? Sounds to me like they are shutting down a bunch of residential customers that think its fine to load an apartment or makeshift shed full of miners and think they can tap 200kw from a residential grid. I warned of this before, but no one took it seriously. A couple rigs in your house is fine an no one will bother you, but if your going to try and stick a couple dozen in a residential area and think no one will notice think again.

Actually if you follow the link provided in the article, it's in reference to a new city ordinance limiting bitcoin mining firms, which means it's a larger scale operation they are talking about shutting down. Not somebody with a couple of rigs in their house or apartment. LOL

https://www.coindesk.com/washington-states-chelan-county-moves-limit-new-bitcoin-mining-firms/

I didn't read this article, Ill be honest.

But I have seen this being talked about for a few weeks now across the USA in different cities.

That's right and it's mostly in cities where LARGE scale operations have setup, due to cheap electrical rates. Putting a strain on their electrical grid, some of which is subsidized by the city and it's causing the rates to rise for everyone. Plattsburgh, NY is another one.

http://www.wcax.com/content/news/Plattsburgh-considers-ban-on-bitcoin-mining-475877703.html

That is the one that I read about.

Thanks for reposting it for others to see Vann.

Mining should never be done in apartments. People doing it are looking a way to be burned alive and want to take their neighbors with them.

I can agree with this.

Putting people who have no idea what others are doing in danger should be grounds to get kicked out of the apartments.

I am sure everyone here has been or lived in a crappy apartment before. Think about your neighbors maxing out every breaker with extension cords because they don't understand how electrical works.

But in my home, I should be able to use 100% of the electricity the way I want to. If I want to cool or heat the neighborhood, as long as I pay the bill and I am not stealing electricity, I don't think people should be messed with.

Re: Mining , still worth it?
by

I still think it is worth it. depends on your strategy though.

I checked my pool address just now and I am expecting 1.9 ETH a month (went up by .09) and I pay $230 for unlimited electricity for my house. I know this number can fluctuate based off of difficulty.

I am not worried about the price per ETH at this moment because I am still making close to $800/month at todays prices. I am mostly mining for the coins at this point though. I am looking for a big jump on prices throughout the year and will sell at that time.

What kind of setup do you have to make 1.9 ETH / month?

I have 5 complete rigs with 6 cards on each (AMD rigs 570 & 580 4gb and 8gb) and a "test rig" that has 2 GTX 1070s on it right now. Total cards is 32. I have 1 card being RMA currently (XFX 570 4gb) and when its replaced ill be back at 33 cards.

I have unlimited electricity for a flat fee at my house ($230+tax).

I too have the same issues with my miners right now, also heat is starting to become an issue an I think this is due to the sheer amount of pollen that is in the air getting to the miners. Time for a small shutdown and some spring cleaning to get things back on track!

Yeah I have a power outage at my house yesterday and when the Rigs came back on, only 3 out of the 5 were working 100%. the other 2 were only showing 3 out of the 6 cards for each rig. I was able to get 1 back up and running by remote into it at work and DDU the drivers and reinstalled them.

The other Rig is still down so I only have 4 up and running at this time 100%. I think I am having a Riser issue on it so I will change some out tonight after work and also do some dusting since I will have it semi dismantled.

The cards turn on, but Rig is not detecting them. will post update after its fixed.

I am in the process of doing a RMA on 1 of my GPUs at the moment as well.

Re: Crypto is dead because credit card companies stop crypto purchases
by

Banks banned Credit Card purchases for Crypto because they are missing out on a CASH ADVANCE FEE plus the HIGHER APR ON CASH ADVANCE FEES.

I know this because I am a banker at a USA bank.

Yes there are a lot of other reasons (some probably more important that the fees the banks are missing out on) that banks will not let you use "Credit" to buy Cryptocurrency.

The thing is, banks (yes not all of them) will allow you to use the money you worked for anyway you want to. It is very limited to what you cannot get with using our bank debit card

Credit=Money the banks trust you with but its not physically there

Hard earned dollars=the money you deposited into the account

if rigs totaly shut down with no error its almost definetely PSU
i had similar problem even with reseter tool ... fan on 1 psu just stopped and it makes overheating of psu and his power-off overheating protection makes its job

and AMD and nVidia cards is realy great description :-D
you can have 2 vegas and 7 80ti and those psu you have are worthless Wink
so please, more specific list of gpus Smiley

Im with this guy. we need to know if you on the type of gpus you have. and also are using 110v or 220/240v outlets also. PSUs will say its for a certian wattage amount, but it has to be on the right voltage to give that much juice also.

Guns should not be controlled just like knives should not be controlled.

For a person to be truly free, they must accept that harm can be done to them from someone else and that person much take action for themselves.

Tools can be used for good and evil.

I am glad to live in the USA where we have more freedoms (not 100% free) than other countries. But as I said earlier, if someone wants to be truly free, they cannot live in fear of the "what if"...

Death comes to us all and that is what makes us equal

Looks, pretty good so far.

I too have been expanding my mining far, I will be receiving my next batch of ASIC based miners soon. Unfortunately, it just doesn't pay great at this time to buy 1060s or 1070s at their ridiculous amounts they can be found.

that is true about not paying much on the returns for GPUs at the moment. I am still profiting almost $1k a month with todays prices of ETH which is what I am mining still.

just got a new air compressor so I will be doing some vacuuming and dusting this weekend since spring time is causing a ton of pollen to be in the air.

I saw the pics! Finally!!! I would love some more, perhaps one from the outside?

I know I will get some outside pics when I can.

I hope to add more GPUs I the future to get me over the 1gh/s mark. Thinking Juneish will be the best time for my to have extra cash on hand and purchase enough to put me over that mark.

I am going to rewire the attic gable style fans into one single 20amp breaker. They are currently on separate dedicated breakers. I am willing to add more attic fans if need for ventilation.

So far what would anyone suggest that I change or adjust knowing that summer in Texas is approaching. Inside Shed is sitting around 95F when the heat is at a high of 85F.
I would look at the FLA (Full Load Amps) rating on the nameplate of the attic fans before I stuck them both on the same 20a breaker.   When an electric motor first starts up and until it gets to rated speed it will draw 5-10 times its FLA.  This will be a problem if both fans start at the same time which will most likely happen if your fans are on a thermostat and also when you first start them up together.  So I really need to know what kind of current these fans are drawing to give you a better idea in your situation.  Why not keep them on separate breakers?  Are you running out of spaces in your circuit breaker panel? There are breakers that take up half a space (2 in 1) that will allow you to only use one breaker space but get 2 breakers out of it.  You also have the option of adding a subpanel to get more spaces if needed too.

I have no reason to put them on a single breaker. I just thought it would help with wire management. But I can see the point for keeping them separate. I have plenty of space for more breakers. Ill run out of Amps before I'll run out of breaker space haha.

If you can return or sell the AC units he got you to purchase, then just install gable attic fans for exhaust. The more you can, the better. home depot has some that are 1300CFM for ($80ish) but you can find some 3000 CFM ones on Amazon for good price and have multiple of them. The 2 I have use 2.8 AMPS each compared to what AC would be. plus you wont have to worry about condensation issues in the future from possible humidity.

Why did you let him in or to do work without you there or having terms already?

I would have that conversation real quick with him (record it on phone or have a witness there if possible) and bring up the fact he did that work and purchase without your authorization and you are not going to pay for install or equipment.

If you do not put a red line down, contractors will run right over you. If he gets pissy, just handle it in small claims court. You will pay around $50-100 to sue him and if he doesn't show up to court you get a default judgement. If he does, have him provide a signed agreement for the work. Either way, sounds like it would be a win for you. (I've never sued anyone, but if they tried to screw me, I'd screw them twice as hard)

Now as for the AC it looks like you already bought.... i can't help you there. I exhaust as much heat and bring in fresh air. (I have around 3800ish cfm exhaust)

Re: Which card brand?? Need help asap. Selling quickly and at store.
by

on 22/03/2018, 13:15:12 UTC
I've had the most luck with MSI and Sapphire cards.
unfortunately, the OP doesn't have those brands. if OP has those brands, sure I suggestion MSI and Sapphire.

for experience, yes I agree everyone is different. but for experienced a memory error, I have never..lol (just kidding)

I have 3 sapphire nitro 570 8gb Samsung memory and they r my best and favorite card. I started this post when I was buying a bulk purchase for my current set up.

If I could do it different I would try to go sapphire, then msi (friends have this card so I have seen it up close to judge it), then down the list of what I said earlier.

I would also purchase some nvidia cards to diversify my overall operation. I'm going to pull the plug on some used cards (new if I can get them in bulk around same costs) once I collect some more coins from my current set up and I see ETH back in a good area to sell to add more.
