I also ordered a Dual PSU Adapter Cable so I won't be paper clipping haha. I find it convenient that they both turn on/turn off at the same time. It's not that expensive for the cable.

Alright, I realized I won't need the full 1000w power supply. So I'll do 2 GPU + System on one 850W. And then 4 GPU on the 1300w.

I went ahead and ordered these items:

Corsair RM Series 850
EVGA SuperNOVA 1300G2.

Thank for your reply. So you  have roughly the same amount of wattage I would be getting with the two PSU's I specified.. let's try and do some rough math and hopefully someone can verify..

GIGABYTE R9 280X = 300w * 6 = ~1800w
Rest of the system = ~100w ??

That's how I currently see it anyway.

And it sounds like your doing the same exact thing I'll be doing in regards to power. Connecting both molex to mobo, and then connect all powered risers.

I have a package waiting in customs right now that I'm patiently waiting for. In order to complete the build, I have to order a couple more parts. Here is the current build:

Current Build:
1 x ASROCK H81 PRO BTC
1 x INTEL G1821 CPU
1 x 8GB RAM
6 x GIGABYTE R9 280X
6 x USB POWERED RISERS

So, I still need to order my power supplies. I was thinking of going with these guys:

1 x 1000w EVGA SUPERNOVA G2
1 x 1300w EVGA SUPERNOVA G2

Question 1:
Would this be overkill in terms of wattage? Perhaps I can save $50 and go with two 1000w? And how should I connect everything up.. 4 cards on one psu and the system + 2 cards on the other?

Question 2:
I've heard of people linking power supplies together so they get turned on at the same time, how do I do this and is this necessary? What do they mean by "do not mix" when doing this.

Question 3:
I have 6 USB powered risers.. some of the posts I've read from people make me nervous about this whole power concept. But my plan now is to connect the two molex on the motherboard up, as well as connect all six powered risers to each card. I guess I'm concerned about frying the motherboard or the cards. Hopefully someone can give me some advice here on the plan.

Sounds like a good deal. Are you absolutely sure those PSU's will be able to sufficiently supply power to this rig? I don't mind spending a few extra dollars to protect the investment. I've never heard of anyone going the server PSU route from ebay. But if I can get anyone else to comment on that I might just do your exact recommendation.

kcobra, Would you be so kind as to tell me what PSU's you'd go with if you were building this rig? That would be great.

Make sure your processor is supported by checking this list. I'm reading that you may have to perform a bios update. But it's more likely that the board is dead. If your processor isn't on the list, then get a different one to test with and update the bios asap. Otherwise RMA that board.

What processor do you have? And give me the full model number of your motherboard.

I'll take the advice on pcpartpicker. Still going to try and order all the necessary parts within the next couple of days though. I'm also waiting on a call back from one of my corporate contacts at tigerdirect to see if they have any cards. Hopefully I can get a sweet deal that way.. but on tigerdirect.com it looks like the only 280x they have is this one.. (link). Not sure if it's a good one? Haven't seen the diamond name in years it seems.

EDIT: What do you guys think of this card vs the ASUS one. I can save ~$120 by going with it.

Ok, based on the suggestions so far.. I've put together a NewEgg wishlist. While I may not order everything from NewEgg, it serves as a good place to get everything together for fine tuning.

As it stands, it's over budget. I think we can get it lower (without compromising build quality, of course). The PSU's suggested are pretty pricey. Perhaps we can start there?

EDIT: There are a ton of reviews on this card saying that it's artifacting. Is this something to be concerned about regarding mining?

Yeah that should do it.

You may need to create Dummy Plugs to trick the OS into thinking you have monitors attatched to all of the cards.

If that doesn't take care of it, you may have a power problem. Try booting with just two or three cards.

I've been a lurker in the community for quite a while but finally decided to register and get some pro advice. I've seen many a topic regarding rigs and I'm finally ready to build my own. My only concern is the ASIC's that are shipping probably by April of this year (more info). I'm wondering if I can build a rig that will be profitable for me and where I can get a relatively quick ROI (before the difficulty starts going up from the ASIC's). My plan is to build this rig, and mine with it at least until I get a ROI and maybe turn a profit, and then sell the rig to get a couple of the ASIC's. I'm seeking advice on this plan as well.

As far as the rig goes.. I'm really looking for suggestions. But here's the hardware I've chosen so far.
