Re: Antminer S9 troubleshooting?

No, it isn't complete.

I broke the log in two and posted the two halves separately. Posted the first half ok. Posted the second half and it disappeared. I posted it a second time and it disappeared again.

Turns out the mods don't want the latter half posted for you all to look at. I don't understand why?

It looks like the log got truncated.

Here is the lower portion:

PLEASE learn how to use the Forum correctly...
Use the # code function to put all that into a scrollable format.
Requested mods to fix that wall of text....

So sorry.

I am used to forums with more functionality. I am used to being able to post an attachment. Lacking that I did my best. Just not used to having to manually put code in post.

I'll figure it out if I am here for a bit.

When I arrived and connected to the S9 it appeared to be running(shows hash rate on 3 boards) but the fault light is on and NiceHash shows connected but zero work since around 2:00am. I collected the logs at 10:00am.

Any input is appreciated.

....... Well, I was going to attach a txt file to my post but either it is not allowed or I am not smart enough to figure it out.....

Sorry for the novel........

Thanks for the input.

I have two of them connected to the same network switch.  Same Internet connection.

The failing unit stopped mining again  at 2:00am this morning. I can't access it from here but will endeavor to get logs later this morning.

Antminer S9 troubleshooting?

Hello Everyone,

I am just getting my feet wet in the mining process. To get started I snagged a couple of old S9's and built a small GPU rig. Just trying to get educated.....

Time for some education.....This morning I noticed that one of the S9's had stopped processing. One of the three "chains" was showing zero hash and my NiceHash monitor was showing no work.

After a bit of poking around and a couple of reboots I was looking at the kernel log and see what may be an indication of the problem.

Hopefully we have an Antminer Guru in the house.... Here is a snipet from the log:

Well...... I have lost my clipboard...... And, the last reboot cleared the log. The machine is running now....

I hate it when issues appear and then mysteriously heal themselves. I would rather find something broken and fix it. That leaves me with at least a little confidence that the problem is actually fixed,....

My sense of urgency has passed but I would still have someone look over my logs and let me know if anything is amiss.

Any volunteers?  Smiley Smiley

Any input is appreciated.

S.

PS: Gotta love the Antminers this time of year. I can work out here without a heavy jacket now. Smiley

Re: Separate power supply for GPU's?

Yes I did this back in the 2014 days alot. PSUs back then were expensive and GPUs required more power so it was very common practise. However there are a few things to keep in mind.

You cannot mix any of the +12V together. So don't plug in PCIe to one PSU while into the other PCIe port on the same GPU plug in to the other GPU. These days most GPUs have 1 PCIe so it shouldn't be a problem.

However the +12V for the riser should also come from the same PSU to be safe. Normally the +12V going into the GPU from the riser is seperate from the +12V going into the PCIe slot. I've measured this myself with a multimeter.

The way people burned PSUs and Mobo's back in 2014 was because they attached +12V to one PSUs to the ribbon risers and +12V from another PSU to the motherboard and there was current feedback and it destroyed the motherboard typically. However with USB risers it shouldn't be much of an issue.

Another thing to do is make sure to ground the PSUs together. Just connect the grounds together. And make sure the 2nd PSU always has a load on in case the main PSU shuts off for some reason.

Thank you!

If I am understanding correctly: One PSU for the motherboard and drive. A second PSU powering the PCIe cards and the GPU's.

Am I pointed in the right direction?

Thanks again.

Thanks for the input.

I am not entirely understanding  Rduffy 's warning.

I am considering  running all of the  8 pin power connectors from a separate power supply.  If I do that,  should I  disconnect the 12v from the main power supply that goes to the risers?  Or,  should I connect the riser power to the new 12v power supply?

Thanks again.

Separate power supply for GPU's?

Hey Everyone,

I am building a GPU miner and decided well into the project that I was going to add a few more GPU's than originally planned.

Unfortunately I already have a power supply installed and I had to mod the case a bit to make it fit. I can't return it for a larger one.

I do have a 12 volt 40 amp power supply available. Could I run the power to the GPU's 8 pin connector from a second power supply without trouble?

What do you all think?

Thanks.

S.

You can get away with longer runs between the panels and the miners if you run a higher panel voltage. My existing panels  are connected 2S4P and produce around 70 volts feeding the charge controller.  My charge controller is capable of  accepting up to 250v from the panels. For a given set of panels the higher the voltage the lower the current and the lower the voltage drop. With that you can get away with a  longer run between the panels and charge controller.

Hey Longhorn,

Thanks for the invite!

You are doing pretty much what I was asking about.

I would love to hear the particulars on how you are controlling the miner "throttle".

Regarding batteries,  I just ordered some Lifepo4  for another project but I may rob some of them to try out on this project.  I have enough coming to assemble a 12V 1120A/H bank.

The ability to gauge solar production and battery state and throttling the miners based on available power.

I have some time to put it together.  Being at a Northern lattitude,  solar sucks in the Winter. Even worse,  we heat with electricity.  I am going to run my miners from grid power,  in the basement,  and heat my house with them until late Spring.  Then I will relocate into the garage and hook up the solar.
