Re: [XPM] [ANN] Primecoin Release - First Scientific Computing Cryptocurrency
by

What's with all the doom and gloom?

Primecoin is the first and most successful math coin in terms of market cap (the others being Riecoin and Gapcoin), is developed by one of the most legendary and innovative developers in the cryptocurrency space (Sunny King - co-inventor of proof-of-stake), is one of the few coins that has its own Wikipedia article, is featured on Andreas Antonopolous's Mastering Bitcoin, and is a favorite of Vitalik Buterin (co-founder of the second largest cryptocurrency in terms of market cap) to the point where he even wrote an extremely positive article exalting it:

Quote
All in all, Primecoin presents itself as an extremely interesting experiment; for the first time, we have a currency whose mining algorithm has a secondary value, and at the same time Primecoin, unlike so many other coins before it, actually makes serious attempts to improve on Bitcoin in unrelated aspects. Not taking into account Bitcoin’s massive headstart, Primecoin may well be the first alternative coin to actually be better than Bitcoin, giving the currency the potential for a bright future ahead.

Source: https://bitcoinmagazine.com/business/primecoin-the-cryptocurrency-whose-mining-is-actually-useful-1373298534

The vast majority of coins would kill for an endorsement by Vitalik or a Wikipedia article that isn't instantly deleted for being promotional spam.

Outside of the extreme bull markets we saw in 2013, 2017, and 2021 where everything goes up, the cryptocurrency space works in terms of fads. We had the scrypt coingen animal coins fad, the privacy coins fad, the masternode coins fad, the ICO fad, the NFT fad, the metaverse fad, and the current Solana memecoin and AI coins fad. Coins that jump onto these fads are the ones that attract attention and get listed on exchanges. But their success is temporary. Fast forward a couple of years and the vast majority end up being delisted from their exchanges and their communities turn into ghost towns.

Meanwhile Primecoin esches these rollercoasters and keeps chugging along, doing what it does best. It's niche is a small one but it's the biggest fish in it's pond. If the crypto markets go insane again then the price of Primecoin will go up because a rising tide lifts all boats. If a fad for math coins ever materializes then Primecoin is in a superb position to benefit. Until then, expect Primecoin's price action to be a boring one with a lot of sideways movement and little market interest.

Re: Network stuck

Hey,

I think I was able to get the network unstuck (It was stuck at block 2108793, 3 weeks ago). Also reported on Discord

Add my node by running the following command in the console :

addnode "82.66.203.169" "onetry"

Please use v0.16. Resync if needed.
I'll let 2 nodes running and generate.

Here is a link to download my bootstrap at block 2108806, 9/1/24 04:07 GMT+2 (Paris) :
https://mega.nz/file/tYoijBzC#ynd5Uxa7aZyAao4rl_mb5lwpOv50mYIrOywI0H3NIE8

Please consider using the CRT Miner at higher shifts (128+) if you're more interested in Maths than the coins.
Here is a link with some docs about the CRT Miner :
https://gapcoin-project.github.io/mining/

I can explain and share further on Discord.

Cheers ! 🥂

Thank you!

To everyone who is reading this, please add these lines to the end of the gapcoin.conf file. I have set up two laptops on 2 different IPs to mine GAP 24/7 so the network should run more smoothly:

addnode=49.224.72.0
addnode=122.252.159.174

I'm only using 1 thread per laptop so the mining difficulty is still very low. What GAP needs is more nodes and miners.

I added the peer list and managed to get my blockchain synced but I only ever get 1 peer connected. Is FreiExchange the only node mining this coin?

Can you please give us the 1 node you have...
Thanks

The last reliable node on my node list stopped working about 1-2 weeks ago. I'm currently stuck at 14 days behind.

I have 2 laptops on 2 different IPs which I can dedicate to this coin full-time but would rather not fork the chain if it's still chugging along somewhere. Back when I was mining, I had about 70% of the entire network hashrate on my 6 year old laptop so there is a real possibility of forking the chain.

FreiExchange seems to have GAP deposits and withdrawals enabled although I haven't tested it.

What's going on with the official bytecoin.biz website? It references Cryptsy which has been dead for almost a decade and has a link to an article promoting AI trading software?

The Linux client is still written in Qt4 which is deprecated and isn't even included in official repositories anymore. When will it be ported to Qt5?

Hi I can't seem to find a way to access the NXT Asset Exchange in the latest wallet. The documentation says that it should be on the sidebar in the official wallet but there's nothing there. Clicking on an asset doesn't do anything. The read-only wallet at https://nxt.jelurida.com/index.html doesn't seem to show it either. Is anyone else having this problem?

Wow, no posts in this thread for over a year and a half.

Anyway, since you probably won't get another response, I'll just tell you what I do is use the web wallet:

https://nxt.jelurida.com/index.html

I know its not necessarily as secure as the client wallet but I've been using it for years and it works great.

Nevermind, it seems to be working now. Smiley

However, it seems that the nxtportal.org block explorer stopped working. It says '502 Bad Gateway' Sad

Re: [2024-07-05] German MP Criticizes Bitcoin Sales, ...

I will never understand why governments continue to sell BTC (an asset with finite quantity that has the potential to become the world's reserve currency) for pieces of paper they can just print themselves whenever they want. Back in 2014, the US government sold the former Silk Road coins for $600 each. I bet they regret that decision now. El Salvador seems to be the only government that realizes this.

Ultimately, governments selling BTC is good for Bitcoin and society because it means that wealth (real wealth and not fiat wealth that can be inflated and confiscated at will by centralized governments) gets distributed more widely rather than being hoarded and controlled by governments.

How's the bot situation with this coin? I know Huntercoin and Motocoin became dominated by bots. I feel like in order for this concept to work, the games would need to be designed so that humans are better players than bots (e.g. a coin based on the game Go would have worked until bots started beating human players about a decade ago).

Does anyone know if Peercoin is divisible to six or eight decimal places? According to the official documentation, Peercoin should be divisible down to 8 decimal places. But everywhere else I only see six decimal places. Even entering getbalance in the qt wallet console only shows 6 places. The block explorer at chainz.cryptoid.info/ppc also only shows 6 places.

Hi. Is there a working block explorer for this coin? I know it merged with Horizon but I think I missed the swap. My address is NFD address is NFD-SBNP-WDSH-ZZWE-4BBE but I don't know if I ever had any coins in my account. I would like to know if I have any coins or not by checking on a block explorer before I go through the hassle of downloading the wallet and blockchain.

Re: [ANN] Datacoin - Censorship-Free Data Storage
by

Hi everyone, does anyone know how big the current Datacoin blockchain is? I want to set up a node but I definitely won't be able to if it's terabytes in size since I don't have terabytes of free disk space. The OP in the old thread mentions this:

Quote
6. How much disk space does it take?

1Mb (max block size) * 60 minutes * 24 hours * 365 days = no more than 513Gb per 1 year

Datacoin is now a decade old so 513GB * 10 = 5TB. Of course that's assuming that every block since creation was filled to its maximum capacity which I doubt.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Advice.... Stay away from Bytecoin - SCAM
by
Penis
on 01/06/2017, 02:12:08 UTC
Sounds like the problem is with the service (Changer.com) rather than the coin itself. The devs can't do anything about a third-party service. Bitcoin didn't become a scam when Mt. Gox refused to let people withdraw their coins for example.

BCN is not a SCAM...........it is another cryptonote coin , like dash monero, ZCASH, and it is for big use of fund............do not agree with u  Wink Wink

Bytecoin and Monero are CryptoNote coins but DASH and Zcash aren't. DASH and Zcash use different technologies to provide anonymity.

BCN is not a SCAM...........it is another cryptonote coin , like dash monero, ZCASH, and it is for big use of fund............do not agree with u  Wink Wink

bytecoin has a massive premine and they haven't patched the flaw in ring signatures that was uncovered by the monero team that allows infinite inflation. that's scammy enough for me.

The flaw was patched a while ago:

https://bytecoin.org/news/bytecoin-2.0.2-software-update/

Bytecoin had a "ninjamine". Basically it was developed and mined in the dark web by a (probably) small group of people from 2012 to 2014 and only surfaced on these forums in 2014. Strictly speaking, it's not exactly a premine in the true sense of the word.

Re: Why don't you long Stellar, little brother of Ripple?

The price just went up by over two times overnight. Now it's in the top 15 with a market cap of $120 million.

Compared to many other altcoins, it's underperformed overall since the price has increased by only 4-5 times since Jan 2017 even after taking into account the recent price increase. Even just a week ago it was at historic lows (300 sats). Could still be a good buying opportunity. Ripple seems to be doing very well and Stellar and Ripple share many similarities.

Re: Is it a good idea to start a new Indian Altcoin?
by
Penis
on 03/05/2017, 03:14:45 UTC
You might do better promoting existing coins to Indian people, crypto is cool because it crosses country borders and is truly international, but it is definitely based around English language, which is slowing adoption is some places, maybe India falls into that category.

I think one problem is that India has dozens of languages.

Hindi is the most widely spoken and is the only one that shares official status alongside English but only about 25% of the population actually speaks it as their mother tongue:

Quote
India has 23 constitutionally recognized official languages. Hindi and English are the official languages used by the Central Government. State governments use respective official languages.

Hindi is the most widely spoken language in northern parts of India. The Indian census takes the widest possible definition of "Hindi" as a broad variety of "Hindi languages". According to 2001 Census even though 45% of Indian population know Hindi, only 25% of them have declared Hindi as their native language or mother tongue.[2] Indian English is recorded as the native language of 226,449 Indians in the 2001 census.[3]

Re: (XEM) NEM Speculation thread
by

Been following from the beginning. I plan to cash out about a 30% into btc at around 10MM market cap. The other 30% ill cash out within a year or two if things go well, and the rest I hold long term.

On June 30th, 2015, I finished selling 5,000,000 XEM for well under 100 Satoshi each. I gained 3 BTC. That was all my XEM.
Today, this would be worth over $250,000
Feels bad man. Congrats to the hodlers.

http://imgur.com/a/CHdTX

I don't think anyone could have predicted that NEM would be such a success.

My first mistake was reading the NEM thread but being too lazy to claim a stake. Sad

My second mistake was that after it became obvious that NEM was a serious project, I still kept thinking that NEM would always remain NXT's "little brother". So I always had more in NXT than NEM. Sad

My third mistake was that I only bought the minimum limit of 0.1 NEM stake on the NXT asset exchange.

I bought a few hundred thousand more on Poloniex for about 100 satoshis each just after NEM launched though with the goal of getting up to 1 million XEM.

Which brings me to my fourth mistake. I forgot about NEM and cryptos due to college just as the bear market was beginning to reverse. So I put my original goal to reach 1 million XEM on the back burner. Sad

I came back in early 2016 to see that the NEM market cap had risen 16 times to $16 million. So I thought it was too late to reach 1 million. That was my fifth mistake. Sad

I still have my original 300,000 XEM. But I could have had so much more... Cry

Then again, if Bitcoin fails then I'm sure Litecoin will too.
