Re: NXT :: descendant of Bitcoin - Updated Information

I am still waiting for 1440 confirmations, and that brings up another question. That should take about two days right? In the local view of my transactions it shows the 10+ next to confirmations (i realize that it will show this as the confirmations continue to grow) and after two days it should hit about 1440.

The thing i dont understand is the blockchain explorer, it only shows 4 confirmations for the transaction and its been a day and a half. What does that mean?

hover over the 10+ and you'll see the exact number.
alternatively you can use http://localhost:7874/nxt?requestType=getTransaction&transaction=[your transaction number]

I believe this is a bug of the blockchain explorer, transaction confirmations sometimes get stuck.

Also try block explorer at http://www.mynxt.info/blockexplorer/

8 projects waiting for approval in infrastructure committee:

https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=806&p=3877#p3877

2 projects waiting for approval in marketing fund committee (salsazc please look for double entry with your administered fund)

https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=807

please go discuss and vote.

thank you

update committee boards:

NXTinfrastructure board: 9 projects ----> 1 validated, 7 non objected, 1 objected

If no objection by tommorrow first project "payment modules for the main open source ecommerce and CMS systems" project leader Damelon, will receive 50K from the infrastructure unclaimed coins fund.

Any objections can be formulated here: https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=806&start=20

NXTmarketingfund: 3 projects------> 2 non objected, 1 objected

https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=807

NXTtechfund: 1 project------> more info required

https://forums.nxtcrypto.org/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=808

What happens to the objected one?

If no concensus committee has to vote (voting system tbd, non gameable voting system)

Woah, woah, woah.  I want to call a time out here for a few pages.

I'm not trying to be the Grinch here, but I STRONGLY think we've got to get a better handle on this whole process before we just start handing out NXT left and right to ANYBODY.

The infrastructure spending thread has been open for all of about 36 hours.  Already we've got 9 projects in the queue and only 23 posts in the thread - less than 3 per project.  There is NO WAY we have given the proper amount of deliberation to what is being proposed here.   And a vote is being called for already if we haven't achieved agreement as a committee?

Um...what's wrong with this picture?

I am a big believer in spreadsheets to collect all the data in one place and if ever there was a need for them, it's right now.   We need to generate a standard spreadsheet listing who is asking, what their project is, how much they want, and a link to a thread that talks about their individual project.  Just for starters.

We need to establish a rule that nobody gets a vote on their project for at least a week after they've proposed it to avoid the exact kind of rush to judgement that is happening here.  I would personally prefer at least two weeks, but I don't want anybody to think I'm TOTALLY crazy...

I also sort of thought there was gonna be some kind of vetting of people putting their names down for committees, where they would have to put in at least one post describing why they thought they were qualified to serve on a committee, what they wanted to accomplish there, blah blah blah, and um....we might actually VOTE IN A POLL to pick the top 5?

Instead it's just put your name down as a candidate and you're in?  On as many committees as you want?

So how is voting for funding going to work in a group of people like THAT?

Hey, I'm all for rapid progress but we've got to establish some kind of initial setup and standards here and PACE OURSELVES FOR THE LONG GAME or this bounty of NXT is going to be gone in a FLASH.

I say forget about voting NXT out of the treasury for at least a few more days and lets go back to setting up the committees themselves and the "paperwork" that defines the process we are about to embark upon..

Agreed, somehow I assumed the debates in progress had no actual executive power.

So first things first, what about opening a new spreadsheet where members volunteering/applying for the committees can enter their profile in a comment field? Then set polls.

Having made a general expression of dismay a few posts back, let me zoom in here a little.  Pin, I like you and we see eye to eye on a lot of things and I applaud your initative and these committees can probably use a Trail Boss and you might very well be the right person for that task.

But I gotta call it like I see it.  And one guy who has not been voted in to be a leader just cannot make statements like "If no objection by tommorrow first project XYZ will receive 50K from the infrastructure unclaimed coins fund."  and "If no concensus committee has to vote" when the committee hasn't even had time to say boo to each other yet.  I haven't gotten involved yet because I thought we were still in some kind of phase where people were still putting their names in to APPLY for the committee.

Somehow I missed the memo that we've got the tach redlined while we're screaming down the freeway of love in a pink Cadillac.

So I'm gonna say two things and shut up.  I hereby vote no on every single infrastructure project until I see its details on a spreadsheet line.  And I'm gonna go off and create that spreadsheet right now.  I'll be back with the links.

The community must come to a concensus as to who is the person authorized to request the treasurers to make a spending transaction. Each treasurer should "take orders" from one person only, and ideally it should be a different person for each fund/treasurer.

Great summary, Ricky. Just a few comments:-

True Anonymity
Bitcoin transactions between wallets are recorded forever on its blockchain.  NXT  achieves true transaction anonymity via the no-trust-needed zerocoin (testing now) / zerocash (coming soon) protocol developed at John Hopkins University.
What about BCNext's original built in mixing feature?
"Nxt is being developed with payment privacy in mind.  I have not revealed details yet, but I can say that there is a special account in Nxt (recipient #0), later it will be used for advanced features (mixing, escrow, etc.)". I assume this will be available in April?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303898.msg3355477#msg3355477

Transaction Rapidity
Bitcoin takes 10+ minutes per block for a max throughput of 7 transactions per second (TPS), currently using a 16GB (and growing) blockchain.  NXT currently takes 1 minute per block, with improvements in block timing speedup and routine chain pruning expected to support an eventual 1000 TPS.

What about using automatic rather than "routine" chain pruning as per BCNext's original design?
"Each 525949th block (1 year) the blockchain will be shrunk (and checkpointed)"
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=317607.msg3409786#msg3409786
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=303898.msg3372610#msg3372610

Consider adding a very important feature "Instant transactions with guaranteed confirmation", again a key original design by BCNext.

BCNext said something like do not worry about NXT being popular (or valuable). Build a digital economy using NXT. People will use the things we can build with NXT. NXT is like the roads, plumbing and wiring. Not really stuff most people get excited about. We need to build the stores, buildings, movie theatres, even farms (like POPPP has) using NXT. Most people wont know or care that they are using NXT, but of course some people will realize the value of NXT is related to the sum of the value of all the things that can be built on top of NXT.

So the more services we can come up with to build on top of NXT, the more people will indirectly use NXT. As a community, if we can think of things for "normal" people to use built on top of NXT and then making it as easy for them to do this, then the number of NXT users will be much larger than the number of bitcoin users. Also, it will be relatively easy to monetize any significant usage so we can build businesses creating services for people, all on top of NXT.

THINK BIG!

BCNext gave us a platform to build on. Like the Internet protocol when it only supported email. Sure email was useful as compared to faxes, but most people back then actually sent physical letters through the mail! How many protocols run on top of IP today? How many things can we build on top of NXT? What will be the http equivalent for NXT?

Why is the test client laggy for me? Anyone else?

4gb ram, i7 2.4ghz, Win8

yes, i think because it use holms.cloudapp.net and not local nxt core app. and its heavily loaded with us testing it.

no I don't think so. They have plenty of performance

so it is client side then...
still waiting for proper test asset exchange client to come out... anyone?

It is laggy for every single function in the client for some reason, it's like running out of memory or running high spec game on super high settings with low end computers. Lags for maybe 30seconds and i get 10second window of typing and clicking.

Edit:i don't see any hdd activity. totol computer usage cpu 4% ram 40% java.exe:32mb memory 0.2% cpu

Same here. Mac. Laggy

We r testing Asset Exchange

Go to https://holms.cloudapp.net:6875/ and create an account. Don't use an account that exists on the main network! After u get the account id u can play such a game:

- Post here ur account.
- I'll check the 1st letter of ur nickname. If the letter wasn't used before then I'll send u 200'000 Test NXT, now u r supposed to send 10'000 to each guy who asks for test NXT and has the name starting with the same letter as urs.
- Download an Asset Exchange client and use it to help us with the testing.

@ AE client devs:
Post links to ur client soft, plz.

I prefer (2). If the method is too complicated, I propose a simplified version - option (3)
  • Use AES Crypt instead of Truecrypt. It is much easier to use.
  • If you're not comfortable using deathswitch.com, we could just encrypt the text file containing passphrase and ask someone we trust to keep it and to email it to the recipients - much the same way we'd need someone to physically take the envelope out of the safe deposit box & post it.
  • Once the text file containing the passphrase has been encrypted, we immediately send decryption key to all other treasurers by ordinary email (no need to use bitmessage). This way we can confirm that the backup process has been completed.
What do you guys think? Once we've agreed on the method, we can post it in the main thread.

I would go with option no. 3.

+1

I will need help though to make sure I don't do something stupid in the process!

Not sure what rickyjames thinks, but looks like he's got the envelope solution sorted out. We could use this among the 3 of us.

1. Download AES from https://www.aescrypt.com/download/
2. After installation, drag the AESCrypt.app icon from App folder to desktop
3. Create a new text file. Enter passphrase of your Nxtfund and save it. eg. KLee.txt
4. Drag Klee.txt and drop it over the AESCrypt.app icon on the desktop
5. You'll be prompted to enter a password. Enter a password & click "Continue"
6. You should see the encrypted file KLee.txt.aes in your finder.
7. SECURE DELETE the unencrypted file Klee.txt (important!)
8. Send encryption password to other treasurers by email
9. Give Klee.txt.aes and treasurers' emails to someone you trust, with instructions.

Hope this helps. I'll PM my email to you & neer.g  and we can test it out with a dummy file

To decrypt, drag the KLee.txt.aes file to the AESCrypt.app icon, enter password and the a copy of decrypted file KLee.txt will appear in the finder.

So much trouble bcos of "Trust noone" Smiley

So 2 questions.

1) What is the tecnical term for the assets that will be issued on the asset exchange. Specifically what is the technical term for this type of financial instrument? I know they will be a type of security but they are not futures. When the us treasury issued promissory notes redeemable for gold or silver they called them certificates. Is "certificate" the most accurate term? I, with my silver bullion gateway, would be issuing "silver bullion certificates"?
Share?

2) Even if we know what the technical term is than we probably shouldn't call it that. We may solicit unwanted attention from financial regulators. So what are we going to call them?

Asset?

no a share entitles you to a portion of the equity in a thing. this is different. this is the title to a thing its self. you are the owner of the silver coin, i am the custodian, and the token is the deed that proves that you are the one that owns it.

I suggest you call it anything, other than something misleading or sounding like a wall street financial instrument. What's important is how you define that asset. Let's call it AAg (Anon silver) as an example. 1 unit of AAg = "whatever you define".

Many may not understand the difference between holding title to an asset vs having a claim to a pool of asset. To make your service safe for market participants and professional (and hence profitable for you), it would help if you publish, sign and embedded a social contract into the blockchain defining a few key points:-

(1) Title to asset is transferred from you to buyer upon x confirmations by the Nxt network
(2) Until physical delivery is effected, any holder of AAg as defined by the Nxt blockchain remains the bailor and you become the bailee of the asset. See Bailment.
(3) Asset is stored by bailee on an Allocated asset (as opposed to an Unallocated or pooled asset).
(4) If you deal with bars with serial numbers, you could offer storage as Segregated asset, in which case each title is tied to a unique physical item.

(2) is the most important. Once it has been established that you are acting as a bailee and have no legal rights to the AAg and that they do not appear on your balance sheet, it cannot be sold by liquidators if you become bankrupt (not that you will Smiley) or if it's confiscated by the FBI.

This is how major bullion custodians like GoldMoney, BullionVaut & PerthMint do it.

Hope it makes sense.

PS: Only 100k left on the account controlled by me. It will be used to pay the reward for the injected fatal flaw. All other rewards/bounties must be paid from the accounts controlled by the keepers.

@CfB, thanks. I promise to keep it secure and await instructions to disburse the funds from my "boss", whoever he/she may be.

@rickyjames, klee, neer.g
Now that the funds are in, we have to agree on a method to safeguard it. So far, there are 2 options
(1) Pre-addressed envelope
(2) Encrypted file containing passphrase

If we agree on (1), we have to start exchanging postal addresses
If we agree on (2), we have to start exchanging email addresses

I prefer (2). If the method is too complicated, I propose a simplified version - option (3)
  • Use AES Crypt instead of Truecrypt. It is much easier to use.
