I think Ethereum Classic is profitable.
One thing you can do is that buy antiminer f3 for ethereum and fill you bags with ethereum.

Even if the F3 goes on sale it will most likely be for around $3500 keeping with past Bitmain launches. You would be better off just picking up another 10 Ethereum at these prices and holding on to them than hoping your ASIC ever pays itself off.

Re: Bitcoin going $1000
by
Raimy

I cannot see $1,000 as much as maybe $2,500 - $3,000 range. It might have a quick wick below these numbers, but I think we would be hard pressed to actually reach $1,000 again.

The reason I say this is from looking at past BTC bubble cycles, where it hits a new ATH only to drop just slightly above where it started out from. Since we have been in $1,000 territory twice in late 2016 early 2017 and also back in 2013, I think that price would act as a hard bottom.

Additionally anything below the $2,500 - $3,000 range will be like pushing a big beach ball underwater, it is possible with enough force but the slightest slip and it bounces back up the the surface.

Re: Long or Short since Bitcoin reached 8800 again?
by
Raimy
on 24/03/2018, 08:37:20 UTC
I am still short from above $14k when I lost my nerve (now glad I did) and I am still waiting for a good bottom to jump back into. I did pick a little bit up back when we were near $6k, but I am still waiting for the big "mother of all buys".

I trade a small amount in-between to keep from getting bored, but I don't think we have reached the real bottom quite yet. I could be wrong, but then again I have plenty of room to get back in again before I lose any money, or more correctly lose any Bitcoin.

Re: Bitcoin in a triangle - Watch it closely
by

I have a chart with a triangle on it too, but my trendline starts a bit earlier than yours does. In fact it starts about when Bitcoin was first listed on Mt Gox. I had to overlay Mt Gox early charts with later ones for Binfinex to get a long enough time line, but getting back to the point, my triangles low shows we could hit about $2,500 before breaking the real long-term trendline.

Re: I am a time-traveler from the future, here to beg you to stop what you are doing

Obviously no predictions what so ever, I don't know why you credit him for his $10k prediction in 2017 when instead it was actually $20,000. Why no mention of that? Also his 2013 prediction of $100 did not mention the $1,200 high that year, nor the subsequent crash back to $100-$200 the year after.

I know this is all in good fun, but please don't even for a second claim he or anyone else was a prophet. I am sure if you counted up the posts from then, there would be just as many predictions claiming $10k in 2017 as there were ones saying it would drop to $0 in 2018.

Re: Router mining ETH at 21Mh/s using only 18Watts
by
Raimy
on 24/03/2018, 08:00:45 UTC
From the description it pretty much says they are combining two units into one to make this work. Why put this into a router and not just sell the mining portion as a stand-alone unit?

While I am fine with mining, I don't want anything on my router securing the rest of my network except what is required to run the router. There are already enough back-doors and security vulnerabilities to worry about without intentionally placing more of them in your router.

Re: Running Corsair 1200 & 1000 watt psu's near max capacity. Safe?
by
Raimy
on 24/03/2018, 07:55:37 UTC
I run a bunch of Corsair 1000's and have not any any issues with them. I don't push them as hard as you though, and I keep them to a maximum of 800-850 watts on input, meaning they are probably delivering 750-800 output. I also run them at 240V input, so this is a little easier on them as the input current is slightly less and PSU efficiency is slightly better.

For the OP pushing the input over 1040 watts and 950 output, while you may technically be within specifications, I think consumer PSUs are designed more for the 1000 watts to be a maximum surge current, and not a 24/7 constant load. I would look at reducing the load on it if you expect it to last and to also minimize fire risks.

Re: What temp do you set as your max - RX 570
by

on 24/03/2018, 07:41:43 UTC
Hey guys, i dual mine ETH and XVG and have my max temp set at 75 and target at 70 - is this a safe number? What do you use?

Those aren't bad numbers, in fact your max could even go a bit higher to say 80° C for the summertime. I would also look to lower your target temperature to maybe 60 or 65° C, depending on your ambient air temperatures.

by

Unfortunately, these things sell for much less in used condition on ebay, in the $50 to maybe $75 range. https://www.ebay.com/b/Tripp-Lite-240V-Computer-Power-Distribution-Units/86723/bn_2780964?rt=nc&_sop=15

Even though I believe your units are probably much newer than the average one on ebay, used is still used. I would maybe consider all three for $150/shipped, but I have a feeling that will be too low of an offer for you.

Some people might have developed bots to parse through posts looking for certain keywords, but for most the only way is to do what you have been doing, search and look for new posts.

This is actually a really great post with a lot of useful information and insight, thanks for sharing!

I agree that one can not do enough researching on their own. No one really knows what the next big coins will be or which ones will go bust, but those who put in the time and effort to find out as much as they can about the coins ahead of time, their developing teams, etc. will tend to do better than those who take the easy way out and simply are looking for a list.

Don't forget Bitcoin ATM's. If you live in or near a major city there is likely one nearby. Simply have a mobile Bitcoin wallet app and deposit some cash, scan your Bitcoin QR code and done. The fees might be a bit higher but nothing beats the convenience.

Re: VOTE : Do you want the ETHERIUM DEV. to Fork it --> Save GPU miners ?
by
Raimy
on 20/03/2018, 09:32:26 UTC
I would support a fork of the coin to allow GPU mining to continue. I think it is more in the community spirit for a coin than to have it only mined by a handful of big companies.

It is interesting to go back on the launch threads of so many coins and see how they promoted decentralization and/or ASIC resistance, only for some amount time to pass then they don't seem to care anymore. Is it a case of the Dev's getting rich and really not caring, or are they being offered something in return for not forking? Big money always seems to corrupt things.

As other posters have pointed out, there are other things going on at Facebook which are more likely to do with their share price going down than it does with Bitcoin advertisements; the Cambridge Analytica situation, their privacy officer leaving, just people getting sick of them and leaving the platform, etc.

Re: Do you think bitmain is secretly mining ETH with ASICs?
by
Raimy
on 20/03/2018, 05:21:55 UTC
I think proof of this is that while the Ethereum prices has been dropping we are seeing network hashrate continuing to be added at a feverish pace.

Looking at the Etherscan website we can see: Highest Avg Hashrate of 268730.4354 GH/s was recorded on Friday, March 16, 2018.

This would be crazy to be simply normal miners going out and buying more overpriced GPUs while profits are plunging, but might make sense if it is from new ASICs which are way more efficient.

Re: So something I am trying to understand !

Actually there are already articles appearing the G20 will not be looking to crack down on cryptos as much as had been feared. Some sites are even attributing Bitcoins bounce to the news, so I think if this dip was the result of those fears it is near bottoming.

I do think there is more than just the G20 meeting factoring into all this, so while we may still have some rough waters ahead, I don't think it is going to nose dive to $3k or anything.

Re: Is your local Craigslist / Kijiji flooded with GPUs ?
by

on 19/03/2018, 06:12:53 UTC
There is a persistent Craigslist ad near me that lists a EVGA GTX108TI for $600. It lacks much detail and there are several posts using the same pictures so I think it is a scam.

Most of the other GPU ads are still asking more for used cards than they sell for retail, for example used GTX1060 6 GB for $550, lol.

Re: What will happen to bitcoin in 2018?
by
Raimy
on 18/03/2018, 00:02:51 UTC
No one really knows, but with all the attention it has been getting and the number of new people coming in, I do not believe we will sink back too far. If you zoom out on a long term price chart, say 5 years, and drew a long term trendline, anything above $2,000 is still really good long term.

The recent high to $20,000 was a couple years premature, just as was the $1,200 run-up was too early back in 2013. The market needs time to correct and get back on track. So myself, I think if Bitcoin can stay above $5k this year we are still doing great.

I know people who recently bought above these prices will disagree, but keep in mind even the person who bought at the very top back in 2013 is still doing ok today assuming they held.

Re: MINING STILL PROFITABLE?
by
Raimy
on 17/03/2018, 23:58:21 UTC
I feel that mining is indeed profitable. I think as long as my earnings are greater than my electrical costs than it is ok.

The bad feelings by many on here are probably due to them overpaying for their mining gear and they are too focused on looking at the short-term. The way I feel you basically invested in mining gear in order to "buy" coins and a less than market rate.

This is still true as of today, where you gain more coins for your $$ by mining than you do by buying them directly. Since the only reason to invest in a coin is that you feel at some point in the future the price will go up, then by that measure mining is still profitable.
