made this little stand with a sidecar haha. using the cool air from my windows, running better than ever
https://plus.google.com/photos/+AaronRenzelmann/albums/5975342671682342193
very nice.

I actually went to so far to not use anything at all besides the mobo-box on a shelf in the garage. not even lego.
my first rig I ended up building a wooden frame, more for the fun of it.

Re: can mantle improve hash rates?
by

on 05/02/2014, 16:56:08 UTC
even if mantle could improve hashing, since it is a different technology, the miner programs would have to adapt first....
but, as mentioned, it is a "gaming" thing. it's like asking if DirectX is doing anything for mining and the answer is "no".

Naive(?) question - can I exchange my PPC to LTC or BTC?
If so, how? I don't see where/how to do it. I only see "Buy/sell LTC".

Otherwise, if I sell my PPC - what do I get in return? BTC or USD/EU? They don't seem to trade USD/EU, so - what can I actually do other than to deposit/withdraw?

I can help you this weekend if you need walk through, but here are my thoughts:

Short answer is "yes."  You may need to trade PPC into BTC, and then BTC into LTC.  Not sure if the PPC/LTC markets have been disabled, or if you have to "enable" them.

I've mostly stuck to PPC/BTC and LTC/BTC trading myself.

Ok, figured it out now. thanks for the offer and sorry the hassle.

Re: Cooling of my GPUs sucks - can I safely remove the cover?
by
Rh3nium
on 21/01/2014, 20:11:19 UTC
My gut feel would be "no"....  the cover and fan as designed are to ensure channelled airflow exactly over/through where it needs to be...  leveraging the venturi effect for flow efficiency and pressure.  Without the casing, much of the airflow across the heat exchangers would be lost, making the cards more likely to overheat.  I am happy to be corrected on this...

Personally, my rig has 3 x R9 290's, and after dealing with the noise for the past couple months, I've finally got fed up and have just pulled the trigger on 3 of these:

http://www.watercoolinguk.co.uk/p/Aqua-Computer-kryographics-Hawaii-for-R9-Radeon-290X-edition-acrylic-glass-nickel-plated-version_42990.html

Oh yeah...  and the rest of the watercooling gear to go with them.  Bloody expensive, but will save my sanity and drastically improve the WAF  Wink

I figure something like that as well Sad
maybe one can add some additional fans simply. If I look at 7950s with 2 or 3 fans, the casing is pretty open.
water-cooling is a no-brainer, price aside...

Cooling of my GPUs sucks - can I safely remove the cover?
by

I am using 2 (3 once I have PCI raisers) PowerColor HD7950s, I guess it's the reference design. Doesn't make for great cooling, it's always around 80 Celsius, and if I want to push the hashes, the system gets unstable. Aside from moving the whole rig to my garage...

http://www.powercolor.com/us/products_features.asp?id=387

Anyone here knows, has done, tried, to remove the whole cover and leaving only the fan on? Usually the cooling is designed for a chassi with air in/out at specific points. Since the typical rig is just "open", it might help without the cover?
Thoughts?

(water cooling would be "cool", have that on my gaming PC with an old 5850, it never goes over 42 C and is silent... but a bit expensive for a hobby mining rig....)

Re: DOES ANYONE KNOW HOW TO GET A BI FURY 5GHZ/S USB MINER TO WORK WITH CGMINER 3.70
by
Rh3nium
on 18/01/2014, 08:15:10 UTC
Have you downloaded the drivers?

http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx

use those with the new USB device. should you after that installation not "see" your device (can happen with win7), don't worry.
Fire up cgminer, should work.

If you want to run CG miner for your graphics card as well, make a copy of the CGMiner folder simply.
Use one for GPU, one for USB stick. when us start the USB stick version, use the no-gpu.exe version (for V3.7).

Hope this helps, I am kind of new to all this myself

PS: please don't type in all CAPS, it is pretty exhausting on the eyes.

Well, I find the idea pretty interesting and could see myself buying one/some, or even testing.
Though I wonder if it would be better to focus the developement on Litecoin (scrypt) based miner solely? You know, get more power out of it at same price/electricity?

Ran TAG over night, seems to be ok. I guess this particular one just needs more time to catch up? The first time I posted, it was running several hours, else I probably wouldn't have mentioned it.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Something weird with TAG ? When I switch to TAG I get a few kh/s, maybe if lucky half of my current rate that CGMiner shows.
CGMiner shows me a hash on my single card at ca 250-300 Kh/s, depending on Intensity setting.
DOGE on the other hand is ok, CGMiner shows 100, 200 or 300 Kh/s, then my statistics on the pool show 100, 200 or 300.

I have to add, that I first started with DOGE, then used the web-interface switch to TAG. Maybe something to do with that?
I'm not able to reproduce this, but I'll try few more things. Just to make sure this isn't something simple, when you switched over to TAG did you wait watch the dashboard at least 10 minutes? That's how long it takes for the statistics to get accurate.

Sorry for any extra work.
I have waited the 10 mins - even more than that. Switching to DOGE is ok after the 10mins. But not TAG. Here a pic after ca 20 minutes.

Ok, I am confused. The coin is gone, but one can still mine? Besides any - why to do that - I wonder mainly how? Solo-mining? Or are there any open pools yet?
Thanks.

As the title says, anyone used Lego to assemble their rigs? Especially the large Duplo could do the trick, or? Maybe with some glue for safety?

Re: How to Install, Use, and Overclock an AntMiner U1 Bitcoin ASIC Miner in Windows
by
Rh3nium
on 15/01/2014, 07:26:01 UTC
I'm having difficulty getting mine to work. I've followed instructions to the letter but just getting no device found when running cgminer.
.....
Any suggestions please?

Thanks

Yeah, I'm getting the same issue.
It shows up fine in the Device Manager before Zadig:
...
and after Zadig:
...
But either way, the antminer version of cgminer won't detect anything:

The first attempt was with the U1 plugged in and the second attempt was with it removed from the system.  In both cases, it's only detecting 4 USB devices total.

I have tried uninstalling all of the drivers and reinstalling them, as well as rebooting the machine, but no matter what I do, I can't get it to detect even just one of them (I have 2).

That's odd, but I know I have had something similar with a Fury stick, it doesn't show up, but is still recognized by e.g. Bfgminer.
Try to download USBDview:
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

It shows all devices, even "hidden" ones and if active or not, etc. You can easily delete drivers there. Might help to restart the install process.

Re: 7950 Mac Edition - "easily" useful for Win/Linux?
by

well, there is still the lower power consumption?

Have you actually calculated that out?

You do understand that a higher hash rate will compensate for more power draw?

No, I figured more in comparison to, say, a 280. probably not a 290 or other, yes.
I am not an authority on this, that's why I am asking.

7950 Mac Edition - "easily" useful for Win/Linux?
by
Rh3nium
on 14/01/2014, 11:34:23 UTC
7950s are becoming rare, however, there are quite a number of Mac special editions around. I believe they have a physical switch to change between Windows/Mac usage? If they are in "Win" mode, they should be useful even with Linux?
Anyone know/have experience with these?
