Re: 2013-05-01 Forbes: Living on Bitcoins for a week: the journey begins
by

on 02/05/2013, 18:29:46 UTC
I remember an article back in the late 90's where someone dared to live off the internet for a month(?) or so. Had to order everything online.

Would love to read this, a great rebuttal to those who critique via lack of adoption.

And for the naysayer goldbugs, someone needs to do an article trying to live off a week from a single 1oz Krugerrand.  Undoubtedly that would be substantially more frustrating than the equivalent Bitcoin experience, starting with the divisibility problem.

  • I cannot pay for my gasoline at any gas station in my town with a basic PayPal account, even if I have the funds already in the account.
  • My local mom-and-pop carryout has a $10 minimum for all credit card transactions. Can't charge a pack of gum unless I buy $9.21 worth of other stuff I may not necessarily need on that trip.
  • I cannot pay for my groceries with my silver, unless I'm willing to eat a 96% loss on an ASE by redeeming it for its $1 face value.
  • I cannot order a pizza and pay with personal check, as virtually all local pizzarias no longer accept personal checks.

Despite all of these flaws and incompatibilities across payment networks I have to navigate everyday in my life, I've somehow managed to survive nearly 40 years!

Oh wait, that's right, I've got a functioning brain. Something that this tart at Forbes (and her editor) apparently lack.

Of course, I also don't throw tantrums when I have to *gasp* walk somewhere without coffee (the horror!!!!). But I guess that's just me.

Re: 2013-04-11 CNBC adds a Bitcoin ticker

They were even kind enough to add a smilie face for us!

Code:
(MTGOXUSD :)

Well, that's the format for the exchange.  e.g.,   (AAPL :NASDAQ).    But MTGOXUSD has no exchange so it is blank  (MTGOXUSD Smiley

Then clearly it should be (BITCOINUSD :MTGOX) right?

The problem is BTC-e and BitStamp have their own books. Gox has the API (for whatever that's worth) for CNBC to get a direct real-time price that the market is moved by.

Can't wait til this stuff is scrolling on my TV screen and goes blank when Gox goes offline. They are in no way, shape, or form prepared for this.

Who walks into Walmart with a gold coin and tries to pay a cashier for the flat panel TV?
The Cashier knows it's worth about 1500 bucks
The Buyer knows it's worth about 1500 bucks.

Where is the Wal*Mart near you getting such cognisant, worldly labor? The Wal*Mart cashiers near me can't properly count change.

Re: 2013-04-09 Blodget: Why Bitcoin Speculators Are Laughing at Bubble Callers
by

on 10/04/2013, 05:06:05 UTC
The bubble, ponzi, and tulip comparisons that are frequently parroted just don't fit because bitcoin is a (presumably) non-expirable commodity.

It's a token for a transaction, so no matter what its value, as long as it has an agreed upon value between two parties at the time the transaction occurs, its useful. The censorship resistant, real time transfer of wealth around the globe will always have value.

I liken it more to fine art. It could be worth a lot less tomorrow than it is today, but the genie is out of the bottle, I doubt it can ever crash to extinction.

Just to play devil's advocate, assuming it did crash and the VC and ETF managers took their money and went home, we'd be right back to bitcoin being the official currency of Wikileaks, Tor and Silk Road, which have been getting months of free publicity. There's like a gazillion potheads out there who have just perked up with, 'I can buy drugs anonymously on the Internet?!?!?!'

That's right. Don't spend one cent on the bitcoin scam, instead send all your money to Chris Duane and he'll send you back some SBSS Freedom Girl rounds. Maybe. When he gets around to it.

The charge: money laundering.  The evidence: the defendants knew that BTC were used for organized criminal activity.  Therefore, they knew they were transferring money for criminals.  This is quite simply the definition of "money laundering."

Time for the fed to bust every bankster that has handled a dollar, since they've been taking them in and handing them out for years knowing it's been used for organized criminal activity.

Here's where price stability becomes a serious issue.

Hate to treat my party to a round of drinks and be unaware the btc conversion rate crashed with a high-volume sell off on mt. gox while I was out.

I'm not hoarding or fuelled by greed, it's just that the things I buy with bitcoins only cost 0.157BTC today, so it's taking me a whole lot longer to float what I've got.  Tongue

franky1 just beat me to it. For nearly forty years I've somehow managed to function in a dollar economy despite the fact I'm handling pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters every single day. This satoshi naming issue is overblown. If people want to use it, they'll make an effort to figure it out. Of all the things in the Bitcoin universe, the decimal notation and naming is the least difficult to explain to a n00b.

If my wife can figure out the g/s/c conversion rate in World of Warcraft, she can figure out BTC when the time comes.

The honey badger reference gave me a chuckle. I'll have to keep that one in mind next time I'm trolling comments on crowdsourced tripe at Motley Fool or Seeking Alpha.

Bitcoin don't care. Bitcoin just takes what it wants. Bitcoin don't give a shit.

Re: What's the best bitcoin t-shirt?
by

on 07/04/2013, 14:59:48 UTC
Hey Guys,

I really want to buy a bitcoin t-shirt. Something simple and classy with just the logo so only people who know about bitcoin will know what it represents.

I'm wondering if anyone has any good bitcoin t-shirt recommendations.

I've seen the ones at cafe press, but are there any other websites out there selling them?

A polo would be nice, but I don't want one that looks like a work uniform!
I can do one exactly the way you want if you'd like. Which logo are you referring to? Front? Back? Big? Little?

Can put it on either Gildan (cheap) or American Apparel (expensive).

Re: What do you tell people who ask "how much bitcoin do you have?"
by

I have never understood why people think it is such a taboo to talk about ones net worth or salary.
People might kill and/or rob you for your money if times are bad and you are not popular.

So it makes sense to be quiet about what you have at times.

People will beg you to give them money because they're poor and "you can afford it," or because their church needs renovations, or something else. Just kill me, take my money, and get it over with already.

Winning the lottery sounds great too until all those fourth uncles on your mothers side start crawling out of the woodwork looking for a handout.

Don't tell anyone what you have unless you're willing to hurt them to defend it. Money makes good people do dumb things.

Yes, Cyprus is good PR, but a waste of time. He should flood Spain, Italy, Greece, France and Germany with these ATMs.
The next round of bad news is going to be Australia and the US skimming 401ks/IRAs/retirement annuities, and that noise is going to explode next week.

Jeff Berwick is an entreprenuer that wants to make money. The best way to make money is to target the people that want to use the system so you're positioned where the volume is headed, not where it has already been.
