Huh? You mean you're downloading blocks with the Bitcoin.exe program? Well that's just the blockchain you're downloading. When that's done, you can start mining with a GPU or a CPU (As the program itself does). After you have completed a whole block with mining, you get rewarded 50BTC. That can take a very, very very long time to complete, so most people join Bitcoin pools.

Bitcoin pools are sites setup for a large number of miners. All the miners work on the same block ,and gets their share of 50BTC for each block (According to how much they have contributed to the block)

I use DiabloMiner for Windows... There are many other GPU miners out there, and you can find a list of them on the wiki:

The one I have is run by Java, so you would have to install JRE too, Oh and also the Ati SDK 2.1
After thats done, join a pool or just mine with the 20 comps together.
I'm myself in a pool, but thats just because i only have 2 computers. I mine for http://bitcoins.lc You might want to check it out too Steady payments etc.
The problem when mining solo, is that you get 50BTC, at once, when a complete block is done. At a pool, you can get steady payments to whatever address you want!

Yup. IT goes down from time to time. It's the biggest pool (As far as i know?) So people DDOS it to keep the difficulty down
