ALL of these companies Im sure have trays of chips sitting on shelves doing nothing.     Their issues are that they cant build boards fast enough, or they dont know how to properly design a power regulator, or they cant cool the chip they designed.

Thank you cedivad for pointing this. Somehow i didn't even read it the first time. All i can say is WOW. You are a tard troll from my point of view after reading this. So KnC announces that they will have a 10 MW datacenter ready in a few months and you are telling us that "ALL" companies have chips doing nothing and that they can't build boards fast enough? O'RLY??? How does this picture look to you? So sick of dumbfucks who can't even do a little research before talking out of their ass...

Well then, would you care to take a stab at why so many of these startup bitcoin ASIC companies cant get product out the door?    Any why they want to sell chips?

Who goes out and spends millions on NRE for a 28nm ASIC with the intention to screw people over by not shipping product?

Make no mistake, I am in no way condoning the ignorance and incompetence that many of these companies exhibit.  I have been screwed over by almost all on the list that I listed... which is how I have first hand knowledge of why each of them has had issues.!

As someone who has been in hardware development for many years, EVERY bitcoin ASIC vendor has mainly had issues with the Board design, and Thermals/Mechanicals.

Once the chip design is done, its real easy to call the Chip FAB up and ask for chips...

HashFast - Original board VS Yoli 70% more performance with just a board change
KNC -  Ran out of VR modules because they bought an off the shelf part.  Then had Capacitors catch fire probably due to not spec for enough ripple current.
BFL-  Yea... Everything.  missed their power budget by 5x 
Cointerra-  Very complex board with heavy components on the backside.  cant be build fast.   Their issues are probably signal integrity and power related which explains the way less than 2Th.
Avalon-  Dont even want to talk about their problems.   Im still pissed.

a few questions for you Labcoin


  • How many of the 20,000 chips in hand still remain to be deployed?
  • On what date will all chips in hand be deployed?
  • What are the approximate running costs, per board or per terahash, of outsourcing and hosting (electricity, etc.)?
  • Are the current chips profitable right now at the current difficulty? If so, what is the current profit margin?
  • What is the status of the next batch of chips? (the 130nm ones promised to use a thermally superior package)
  • What is the status of the 65nm design? If it's still on hold, do you have anyone under contract to complete the design?
  • Have you secured exclusive access to the bitcoin wallet for IPO funds yet from Fabrizio? (If so, what address?)
  • When will you be in Shenzen next?
  • The network difficulty has risen 40% in the last few days, and is expected to rise sharply again in less than 12 days. Can you achieve 1% of global hashrate before the next difficulty change, and can you maintain that rate in the future?
  • There have been a number of well-funded competing ASIC designers now producing real hardware, and difficulty is expected to continue rising at record high levels for the foreseeable future. At what difficulty will the existing Labcoin chips cease to be profitable given the known power and hosting costs?

SERIOUSLY!   All you need to do is post REAL pictures of the hardware you have in hand!!!!    Show us your Lab Bench where you are doing bringup test!  Show us a chip (even a broken one) mounted to a functional PCB!!!!

You can make all of this go away with a few simple photos!   We dont care if they dont work!  We need to know you are actually attempting to build a real product!  

Or even better send some sample chips out for 3rd party verification!

What's the hashrate with the wire mod @400 or 460Mhz? I got a 1000W PSU on a 3 Module machine, how far will it get me?


@460Mhz  36Ghs per module.

~144GHs for a 4 module unit.   This consumes about 1700watt at the wall.

3 Modules should get you 108Ghs and you would need a 1200 watt supply at minimum.


Also the wire mod alone will not get you any where near 400mhz.  you need to hardware adjust your voltage up to at least 1.3 volts (im at 1.36v)  and you must do something about cooling!!!!!!

At stock voltage?  or overvolt?    at stock you will not be able to get anywhere near 400mhz

I mean overvolt.At plug (220V/110V - all modules and their count) or at 12V (single module) one of them will be ok  for me. I will have a clue approximately how much Amps each chip draws

Im running with 31k piggyback and that gives me 1.336v under load at the bottom chip.

Be aware that for me at 460mhz I am 2x the wattage as a stock Avalon!   At bare MINIMUM you need a 1200watt powersupply for a 4 module unit!

I need to find out how to deal with 1600watt total at 460mhz!!!

Not at 400 but at 460 you can expect to be exactly 2x current of stock speeds.

Guy's,

I am wandering how you are able to get such higher rates? I am not hardware expert but according to my knowledge the TPS DC/DC converter can handle up to 20 Amps. At clocks higher that 400 maybe chip consumes 3-4A at 1.3V so 10 Chips *4A=40 Amps. Double the capacity that  TPS DC/DC can handle.

There are really only 2 areas where a switching VR can fail.  Heat and inductor saturation.     If the FET cant handle the current the friction of the electrons traveling through the junction turns to heat.  The heat will eventually kill the part.   If you keep things cool (im watercooling) you can go amazingly far past design tolerances.

I dont know what the inductor saturation point is.  I havent looked up the spec.  I can say that I can hold my finger directly on the inductor and it dosnt burn me.  Its not comfortable, probably about 45-50c temp.

As far as killing my Avalon goes... I dont care.  I need to get as much out of this thing in the next 30 days... after that it probably wont be profitable to run.

What value resistor would I piggyback onto R10 to target 1.30V, or 1.25V?
For 1.3V (1.278V under load) I use 47k. No problem with 400MHz and 0.98% HW, Rejected 0.38%
For stability I suggest sold 2mm2 wire from coil to the end of board. Top cooper layer (VDD_1.2)  is too thin to carry such high currents.

Yes, you need to change R9 resistor value in step-down converter, according to datasheet on TPS40193
the formula is

R9 = ( Vfb * R10 ) / ( Vout - Vfb ) , where Vfb is constant = 0.591v , R10 = 10.5k

for example, calculation for Vout = 1.2 give

R9 = ( 0.591 * 10500 ) / ( 1.2 - 0.591 ) = 6205.5 / 0.609 = 10189 , 10k resistor

in datasheet maximum Vout = 1.32

R9 = ( 0.591 * 10500 ) / ( 1.32 - 0.591 ) = 6205.5 / 0.729 = 8512 , 8.5k resistor

To make ~ 8.5k resistor from 10k you need to add in parellel 60k resistor, but i would advice you try to increase voltage in a little steps like 0.01v before you reach 1.32v and look at hw error rate.

Sorry but i cant point you now where is that resistor located, i just look at hash_unit schematics.

I think hw error rate 2-3% is the highest that you want to see, more than that is a waste of energy.
You can damage the chips by increasing voltage to more than 1.32v - be careful.

Where you located? So, what do you think 1.3v @ chips would yeild, at least 400?
Also, I have upgraded the fans in the unit to 2x 5k RPM 250cfm .. Currently the avy temps read maybe 45C during day time and 35C @ night.... I know this is cooler than the chips themselves but much better than stock cooling. Do you think that would cut it?

Just did quick test of 375mhz ... stable but 6.5% HW error ... think just doin wire mod will bring that down to 2%? =)

Im in Texas.   1.3v should have no problem with 400.   Im only at 1.336 and getting 460mhz. 

As for cooling:  If you do good thermal paste on the backside and are in a cool environment you may get away with just air cooling.
