Board Mining (Altcoins)
Re:

The new beta version is finally ready. You can download PhoenixMiner 5.7a from here:

PhoenixMiner_5.7a_Windows.zip (GitHub)
PhoenixMiner_5.7a_Linux.tar.gz (GitHub)

The new features in this release are:

  • Added lock core clock
  • The problem with the missing GPU temperatures on Nvidia GPUs is fixed
  • Added native kernels for AMD RX6700 GPUs. These are faster than the generic kernels and produce a lot less stale shares
  • Increase the max supported DAG epoch to 550 (should be enough to about Jan 2023)
  • Full support for setting clocks, fan speeds, voltages, and memory timings of AMD RX6900/6800/6700 cards
  • The specific hashrate is now shown in the form of kilo hashes per joule (kH/J). Example: if a GPU has hashrate of 30 MH/s with 100W power usage, the specific hashrate is 300 kH/J
  • Added new command-line parameters -ttj and -ttmem, allowing automatic fan speed control based on GPU hotspot (junction), and memory temperatures respectively. Example: -ttmem 83 will keep the GPU memory temperature at or bellow 83C by increasing the fan speed as necessary. These parameters can be combined with -tt, as well as with each other. These options are supported only on AMD GPUs that report junction and memory temperatures
  • Added new command-line parameters -tmaxj and -tmaxmem, allowing to decrease the GPU usage when the GPU hotspot (junction), or GPU memory temperatures are above the specified thresholds. These options are supported only on AMD GPUs that report junction and memory temperatures
  • Added support for AMD Windows drivers 21.3.2, and 21.3.1
  • Added support for AMD Linux drivers 20.50.x. Use this drivers only if you have Polaris or older GPUs, or the latest RX6x000 GPUs. WARNING: Vega, Radeon VII, and Navi GPUs won't work with these drivers!
  • Turn off the zero fan feature on AMD cards whenever a fixed fan speed is used (e.g. -tt -40), or when an auto fan with min fan speed is used (e.g. -tt 63 -minfan 35). To disable this feature, add -fanstop 1 command-line parameter
  • When -mcdag 1 is specified under Linux, the miner will not wait for the daggen.sh script to finish before starting to generate the DAGs. Instead it will for a fixed 7 seconds. This allows you to do all the following in the daggen.sh: turn off the overclocking of Nvidia GPUs, sleep for 30-60 seconds to allow time for DAG generation, and then re-apply the overclocking of the Nvidia GPUs
  • Other small improvements and fixes

The support for -ttj, -ttmem, -tmaxj, and -tmaxmem for Nvidia 3090 and 3080 GPUs is not yet ready for release. We hope to have it ready for the final 5.7 release.

For more robust integrity check, you can use our GPG public key, which was verifyed with ETH transaction from our main devfee account as explained here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2647654.msg56755869#msg56755869.

Please let us know if you have any problems or questions related to PhoenixMiner 5.7a.

Malware targetting Mac users has been discovered.

CookieMiner steals Google Chrome and Apple Safari browser cookies from the victim's computer and then uploads them to a remote server for login extraction information.

Mark Zuckerberg talking about blockchain

It seems like the FB founder has nothing but positive things to say about blockchain technology.

There are rumours going around that he will release a cryptocurrency for use on WhatsApp, but given the privacy and censorship concerns over FB, I can't see many people going for it.

We've heard about exchanges and crypto projects cutting staff, and to some extent, we all assumed the sh*t projects would be going down under these testing conditions.  But NEM, a somewhat underrated project, has announced it's running out of funding.

Despite crypto winter, the industry is improving innovations and infrastructure
by

Yes, it's tough out there, but regardless of price, the industry as a whole is continuing to build and develop.

I take this as an indication that there's value in crypto, and that the major projects will not go to zero.

Litecoin adding confidential transactions

Maybe there are fans of LTC here, I'm not here to crap on people's portfolio choices, but the point of this post is to stimulate debate on what the point of LTC is.

For me, being the "Silver Bitcoin" isn't enough, and Charlie Lee thinks so too, as the LTC team are working to make LTC more relevant, including the adding of confidential transactions.

Is this a step in the right direction?

Despite people slagging off the Bittorrent token, demand was such to cause system problems on Binance.

Looks like people are still interested in more, and quicker download times for, porn files.

Apple's Wozniak said he sold all his BTC when it hit $20k because he didn't want the constant stress of watching the price movement.

State-Backed Iranian Cryptocurrency - Is this the end for all other cryptos?
by
Samyalson
on 28/01/2019, 19:34:04 UTC
The Iranian regime is looking at state-sponsored crypto as a way to get around the US sanctions.

This measure has far-reaching implications from the perspective that central bank cryptocurrencies/state-backed cryptocurrencies hold the potential to end all others.

Is this a step towards the end of BTC and the rest?

Blockchain Censorship In China
by
Samyalson
on 27/01/2019, 15:01:19 UTC
In 2017, China imposed restrictions on ICOs and fiat to crypto trading. The knock on effects forced exchanges to move to more crypto-friendly locations, and of course, ICOs have disappeared in China although it must be said that P2P crypto trading has flourished as a result.

However, authorities have recently announced a raft of further crypto restrictions. What does this mean for crypto in China?

Re: Are ICO's Dead?
by

on 25/01/2019, 22:57:07 UTC
They've fallen in popularity because of the lack of investor protection and the scams that come from that.

STOs will take their place, but there's still room for utility tokens, meaning ICOs won't die completely.

Surely, eliminating the middleman is good, and if people can access financial services without a credit agency, then we as consumers win.

Hyperledger is different from the rest
by

on 22/01/2019, 17:46:34 UTC
If there's one thing blockchain is rightly accused of, it's speculative hype.

Hyperledger is different, the project is focussed purely on the underlying tech.  This is good for the space because it demonstrates to non-crypto enthusiasts that there is more to blockchain than hype.
