Re: Handmade painting "Bitcoin"
by

No offence, but it looks a bit shoddy quick and simple, all lines are crooked. Painted only for the 'first bitcoin painting ever' gimmick and expecting it to be worth something without putting effort in it.

Re: Coinvisitor Unable to Pay

I, for one, can vouch for CoinVisitor on this. Here is the image I took today which shows that the payment has been made. The payment is sitting in my wallet currently awaiting confirmations. I made the withdrawal yesterday.

In my opinion CoinVisitor has very good moderators that consistantly, tirelessly and honestly explain the problems they're having to any user that asks about them. They are actively involved with their community and stimulate interesting chat about bitcoin and whatever else comes up. They protect and warn their users against any potential scammers that log in to the chat and keep the chat clean from spammers.
I am new to bitcoin and have learned a lot from chatting on their website. They may have their problems at the moment, but there is no reason to slander them with this kind of 'news'.

To the administrators and moderators of CoinVisitor I'd say keep up the good work.

Maybe you could update the OP with languages that are already done or in progress.

Re: POLL: Cyprus: Cause of Bitcoin price rise or just coincidence?
by
Sander
on 08/04/2013, 05:19:23 UTC
If you look at the google searches for bitcoin you see most of it coming from Russia. Russia had a lot of money parked in Cyprus. Cyprus definitely had something to do with the massive rise in value. Directly and indirectly it started to pull more people into bitcoin. Now with the recent media coverage about this massive increase even more people are getting on the bandwagon.

So yes, in my opinion Cyprus was definitely a catalyst.

Re: Hyper Inflation, Round 2?
by
Sander
on 08/04/2013, 03:37:51 UTC
I'm not an economist either, but I don't believe that BTC will see a steady rate of inflation like a traditional fiat currency. I think instead it will simply behave like gold did prior to the 70's where it retained a relatively stable value for over 300 years. The only times in history that the value of gold changed was following the discovery of the Americas (where it saw brief inflation) and then in the 70's when it became a commodity (for the first time ever, we were using gold to create stuff other than luxury items and coinage, such as computer chips.) Like other commodities, gold is now subject to periods of inflation and deflation. Right now gold is in a bubble in my opinion and is not worth diversifying into.

BTC will probably see wild variations in price until all blocks are mined AND anybody who is interested in BTC will already have a stake in it, even if a very small one. Keep in mind that not everybody will want or even be able to obtain a stake in BTC due to the barriers for doing so (e.g. needing a computer with access to the internet when exchanges are needed). At that point, BTC won't be a good idea for investment, rather it will simply become a medium of exchange. Good investments yield dividends or interest.
Yeah we agree, it won't have a steady rate of inflation like traditional currency. I was explaining what I understood of inflation/deflation. More bitcoins being created means monetary inflation, because that's the definition of monetary inflation afaik.

are you kidding? are you gonna slap that list in the average consmers face? he is going to run away screaming, he will never use bitcoin.
You're implying that the average consumer is numerically challenged.
This will work itself out eventually. If they want to use your 'new system' in the future, they'll just call it Satoshi -> kiloSatoshi -> MegaSatoshi -> GigaSatoshi. No need to change the existing names.

I'm offering to translate texts from various languages. I can speak English and Dutch fluently and read German and Afrikaans well enough to translate them into Dutch or English. I'm used to writing in a scientific/academic way, because of this the translated text will sound professional and clear.

Dutch > English
English > Dutch
German > English or Dutch
Afrikaans > English or Dutch

Send me a PM or post in here if you're interested.

Unlike most the bitcoin "investors" I think you are probably right, bitcoin is in a bubble, I don't think the currency will ever just die out and it could become a lot more popular than today but at the current usage the price is definitely overpriced.
Overpriced or not, I think it's going up a bit more. Reason for this is the sudden publicity that bitcoin got after this Cyprus induced value increase, attracting a load of new potential bitcoiners. After that the bubble might burst, but not after a second takeoff.
But that's my guess, which is as good as pulling a straw.

Re: Hyper Inflation, Round 2?
by
Sander

Hi there,

isn't that what you would call a hyper-deflation? The value of BTC is increasing so all BTC prices are going down. Well might be just the opposite perspective but our fiat currencies are considered to be inflating, so BTC is clearly deflating from this point of view.
What he said, it's price deflation when prices drop.
Due to BTC mining there is always a monetary inflation of BTC untill all the bitcoins have been mined. If the coin value was stable this would also lead to price inflation, but the value of the BTC is rising so much faster then new coins are being mined that the monetary inflation is overshadowed by the price hyperdeflation.

Atleast that's what I get from it, I'm no economist.

Re: Help Please

Don't know who to contact for help.. Have tried reaching support with no response.
I made 3 money payment through moneygram to my mtgox account and received emails on March 22nd from bitinstant saying "We have made a direct deposit into your MTGox account and there is no need to use the coupon system on this order" However, there is no change to my wallet on mtgox.. Help please

I haven't used MTGox, so I don't know how it works, but I'll give it my best guess.
Your money payments are fiat money deposits that you still need to turn into BTC. They probably won't turn up in your BTC wallet but in some seperate account?
Or maybe it's because of the DDos'ing that has been going on?

What he said. The code itself isn't virulent, it has just been used in virulent software and now all the virus scanners go batshit when they spot it. Trusted source = no problem.

Re: is this a coincidence?

I do believe that there should be some more commonly adopted 'cool' names for the uBTC and mBTC.

My votes are for:
mic or mike for uBTC
and
millie or mini for mBTC

Satoshi for the smallest denomination is pretty much in stone and for good reason.

Anything over 1 BTC is simply a BTC times thousands, millions, billions etc.
I think those cooler names will form with time as bitcoins become more commonplace. Same with the special names for the old Dutch 'gulden'. No need to force official names imho.

It is also quite easy to change your bitcoins to normal money in cash.  At least in Amsterdam, it is. For your daily food, you don't have to touch the ATM, if you have some bitcoins lying around.

Here in Arnhem I haven't heard anybody about bitcoins yet. Maybe now that I've picked up on it I'll hear more about it though.

Re: is this a coincidence?

i dont think you are getting the point. there is no need to reinvent the wheel and come up with (random?) denominations. we should use the kilo, mega, giga system because people can already easily relate to that

.00000001 BTC = 1 satoshi
.0000001 BTC = 10 satoshi
.000001 BTC = 1 uBTC (micro)
.00001 BTC = 10 uBTC
.0001 BTC = 100 uBTC
.001 BTC = 1 mBTC (milli)
.01 BTC = 10 mBTC
.1 BTC = 100 mBTC
1 BTC = 1 BTC
10 BTC = 10 BTC
100 BTC = 100 BTC
1.000 BTC = 1 kBTC (kilo)
10.000 BTC = 10 kBTC
100.000 BTC = 100 kBTC
1.000.000 BTC = 1 MBTC (mega)
10.000.000 BTC = 10 MBTC

Then why do you insist on reinventing the wheel? What is so hard to grasp about this system? People who aren't familiar with this system can easily learn it. And if they can't learn it, they can just use 'thousand' and 'million' like they do with other currency now.
Do you want to change the existing system of kilo, mega, giga system to go from 1000x to 100x and change the value of a bitcoin to become a satoshi, just because you think it sounds cooler? I don't think that will be very good for the coin itself. Especially when outsiders see that the new BTC that you're proposing is only worth 0,00000001 old BTC, it won't change anything for the people inside, but imagine how scary it looks from the outside.
