Re: GAW Hashlet Genesis thoughts?
by

on 17/09/2014, 01:10:49 UTC
I have been reading about Gawminer & Hashlet Genesis lately.  I am thinking about purchasing some hashing power.  I'm thinking of buying between 100 Gh and 250 Gh.  From reading the previous comments, it sounds like most people think this investment would not ROI.  However, I am not looking for a quick profit.  I am more interested in re-investing any btc I get into buying more hashlets.  I would keep re-investing for several  months, possibly more than a year.

What do you think about re-investing in more hashing power?

HELP!  My Antminer S3's suddenly stopped.  I just received them three days ago.  I got them configured and running easily.  (I replaced an S1, so I was already familiar with the set-up).  They worked fine for the last couple of days.  Today they started beeping.  When I go to the GHash.IO page, I can see the pool is still up and mining away.  But for some reason, I'm no longer mining.  When I log into each miner, and check the miner status tab, there are no stats.  I already tried to power down and re-start them.  What do you recommend I look at next to trouble shoot this?  Thanks.

Ghash US1 went down, don't panic.

Yep, that was it.  Not sure why my back-up didn't kick in (Slush pool).  Maybe I had the wrong URL for that.  So now I have us1.ghash.io:3333 as my first pool, and nl1.ghash.io:3334 as my second pool.  The miners are buzzing again  Smiley
Thanks

If one pool goes down, always try a backup pool first to test its not the miner-pool configuration before moving on to more drastic steps.

The first pool is still running.  I did add a back-up pool today, but it's not working either.

I have a question about the stratum difficulty.  I have two Antminer S3s, and I'm using the GHash.IO mining pool.  Their FAQ says:
Quote
The optimal settings of the stratum difficulty depends on your hash-rate:
16+ GH/s - 16 difficulty
32+ Gh/s - 32 difficulty
64+ GH/s - 64 difficulty
128+ GH/s - 128 difficulty
256+ GH/s - 256 difficulty
512+ GH/s - 512 difficulty
1 TH/s - 1024 difficulty

So based on that, the setting would be 256 for each miner.  Does anyone actually alter this setting in their mining pool?  Or do you just keep the default setting?

thank you.
I don't think it's for each miner (unless you have them as different workers). If they're set as one worker, then set it to 512 (or 1TH if you can get it stable over 1000 GH/s). If they're separate workers then yea, 256 should be fine.

They are set up with different worker IDs.  I thought that was required.  I didn't know I could have two miners in the same pool with the same worker ID.  Does that work?  Is there an advantage to doing that?

Re: GUIDE SETTING UP A SOLAR POWER SYSTEM FOR MINING

Sector7G that will not work that way much. Conservation or energy is still valid.
These solar panel are very less in efficiency for convert photons to electrical energy.
Normally a solar panels efficiency is at 20%, means it will convert 20% of what you give.
Now, with 15 Watts LED you will get less than 3Watts from Solar panel. (15*.2=0.30Watts).
Even if we consider getting 3 watts you need 284 such LED lights in practical case you need more.
Do you think its viable to run such a system?

The possible two options and the best among it is to running on grid power during non solar time.
The second option is to have a lot of batteries to backup for 12 to 15 hours to run 850Watts load during the night.
That will be a mess and need a big investment and not worth the money for mining.

Actually, the 15 watts is the amount of power the LED flood light uses.  But the output is equivalent to a 100 watt incandescent flood light.  It's over 1,000 lumens.  So I was just wondering if that might be enough to power the system.  I'm not sure if the wattage of the bulb is the best way to measure.  The amount of light reaching the panel is what matters.

I was thinking about a solar set-up a few days ago.  I'm glad someone else is also looking into this.

I was wondering about what happens after the sun goes down.  My idea was to lay the solar panels on my back patio.  I have flood lights that turn on/off at dusk & dawn.  I was wondering if I put the panels in a place where they'd be lit up by the flood lights, if that would allow enough power to flow into the battery overnight to keep it from running dry.  And the flood lights are 15 watt LEDs.  I guess it sounds too good to be true... using a 15 watt LED, solar panel, inverter, etc., to power an 850 watt PSU & Antminers.

Too bad you weren't using this pool: http://bitsolo.net/  They promise to pay the full 25 BTC to anyone who finds a block.

I just got an Antminer S1 to replace my USB block erupter.  The Antminer is hashing away in a large pool.  I am using the block erupter now in the pool above.  I know it's a one in a million chance.  But maybe I'll get lucky and find a block.  It' like playing the lottery.
I don't get this. Why is is called a 'pool' when you will receive the full 25 btc on your own?

It is called "Bitcoin Solo Mining Pool".
Btw, why do you need this "pool" if you want to do solo mining lol?

The pool is a service that allows a user to solo mine without the need to download the entire blockchain.

Would you buy an Antminer S1 for $375?

Hi,

I have an Amazon gift card to spend.  I could pick up an Antminer for $375.  I realize I would also need a power supply.  Probably another hundred if I get a good one that could power two units.  Do you think that is a good buy with the current market, difficulty, and other factors?

I've been using a USB miner (2 Gh) for a while just to learn and get comfortable with managing a wallet.  I am thinking about stepping up.

I am new at this.  I am using a USB miner.  I'm using it sort of like training wheels on a bike.  It's a good way to learn without a big investment.  I have received two payouts from Slush Pool.  I am experimenting with wallets from Multibit and Bitcoin QT.  Now that I have gained a little confidence in the process, I am thinking of buying an Antminer S1.

IRS deductable expenses for miners
by
Sector7G
on 27/03/2014, 00:55:10 UTC
Now that Bitcoin has legal status with the IRS, I'm curious about tax deductions.  Refer to IRS Publication 535 for business expenses.  In some cases, a person with a home based business can deduct the cost of insurance or utilities.  I wonder how this might apply to people who mine at home.  As stated in their document:

Quote
To be deductible, a business expense must be both ordinary and necessary. An ordinary expense is one that is common and accepted in your industry.

Electricity and internet service are necessary to mine Bitcoin.  So I wonder if I can deduct them.  For that matter, I wonder if I can deduct the cost of hardware too.

P.S. I apologize if this is a double post.  The forum is giving me some funny error messages.  I did a search before attempting to post (again), and didn't see my thread.

Escrow is a no go...

Yesterday I signed up at Escrow.com.  Originally I kept the default option of a three day inspection period.  Then I received an email that the seller only allows a one day inspection period.  So I accepted the new terms, and submitted payment via PayPal.  Today I received this email from Escrow.com:

Quote
- Your payment has not been processed for the following reason: Escrow.com is unable to accept premier payment options for the purchase of the merchandise listed in this transaction. Transactions are reviewed based on the business risks related to sale of that merchandise. Some of the items that we specifically review and excluded from the premier payment options are: website data/content, services, computer software, GPS devices and cellular phones, items that are time sensitive (i.e. event or airline tickets), designer products, watches and jewelry, currency, clothing, transactions where we cannot determine what merchandise is being sold, and items that we cannot confirm delivery. Due to the nature of these items, we may require check, money order or wire transfer as a form of payment. Escrow.com does reserve the right to review additional risks not listed above. To resubmit your payment, please sign in to your account at Escrow.com.

PayPal also sent an email advising me about the refund, so I haven't lost any money.

I'm in Columbus.  I am still learning.  I have a little 2Gh USB miner hashing away now.  Not much, I know, but I wanted to start small and learn.  I'm thinking of buying something faster like an Antminer S1.  I am involved in a few other MeetUp groups, and I would join one if there were one in Columbus for Bitcoin.

Re: Where can I buy btc
by

on 19/03/2014, 01:50:58 UTC
I am also looking for a recommendation regarding online bitcoin exchanges.  I bought a little USB miner on ebay a while ago.  It's been hashing away at 2Gh.  Not much, I know.  Now that I've had some practice, I'm ready to step up.  I'm thinking of buying an Antminer S1.  Buying direct from them requires I have bitcoins.

I need bitcoins to purchase an Antminer.  So I'm looking for an online exchange where I can buy bitcoins with US dollars.  I'm looking for recommendations on which exchanges are reliable, or which I should avoid.  Also, after all the reading I've done, I prefer to keep my bitcoins in my own wallet on my computer, and back it up myself.  So I just need a place where I can make the exchange, then transfer to my wallet.  That may require having an online wallet to hold the bitcoins temporarily, and that's OK.

thanks!

I saw an ad for them, and started searching.  Their web site refers to their Twitter feed.  When I check there, there have been no tweets since Feb. 26.  I don't know if they're legit or fraud.  But being silent for about three weeks does not impress me.  I would think if they really wanted to advertise for their grand opening, they'd be tweeting all over the place.

CENTcoin wallet is slow and not showing transactions

Hi all,

I'm trying out a few other currencies.  I ran into a problem and I hope the community might have a suggestion.

I installed the CENTcoin wallet.  The first time I opened the wallet, it took a long time as expected since it had to sync for the first time.  But now even if I close it and open it a minute later, it still takes an hour or so to open.  Also, someone sent me a transaction that is still not showing after more than a day.  He sent me the transaction info also.....

Has anyone else had a problem with their wallet?
