Re: Is Bitcoin mining still worth it in 2025.
by
Sergeant Major
on 03/08/2025, 23:17:05 UTC
I'd like to have a few miners running just for the hell of it, but there's damn little chance of making it profitable.  I'm split on solo mining or pool mining.  I know my chances of hitting a block in solo mining are very very low at best.

I realized that I could run the miners at a business I own, so the power usage would be on the business' power bill, and therefore a TAX DEDUCTION!

I'd still have to pay the power bill, but at least I'd be getting something out of it.

But if I did, I'd have to put some sort of quiet large fan kit on an ASIC, as having the smaller fans screaming nonstop wouldn't work at the business.  That means an extra cost and less profit.

I'll probably just stick to coin investing and do my best to buy low and sell high.  Less complications.

Giving crypto gifts to reduce my taxes owed, how do to it right?
by
Sergeant Major
on 22/07/2025, 15:10:12 UTC
I have accounts on several major exchanges, in which I have an amount of bitcoin and several alt coins.  Nothing huge, but some.  A few thousand bucks or so.  I bought in early this year when prices were down, and I am currently up about 30%.  I expect to 2X or 3X my initial investment after interests rates fall and crypto prices rise.  But that's another story.

Okay, so prices rise and I am at a point where I think prices are topped out and I want to cash out.  Buy low sell high.  I'm looking for the best ways to do this while minimizing taxes owed.

I've read about a few things.  One is giving a gift to a spouse.  Would this gift have to be in crypto or selling the coins in my account, then transferring the money to the spouses bank account?  At what point is it made into a tax free gift transaction?  And how?

How about moving my various coins to a stablecoin, so the value doesn't decrease when the alt coin prices rise and fall?  From what I have read, the mere act of trading BTC for a stable coin is considered selling it at an improved price and thus, taxes are owed on the transaction.

I suppose then that just selling the coins for USD cash and letting that sit in my crypto account would also be a taxable event even if I didn't withdraw the cash to my bank account?

I know I'll have to pay some tax, I am just looking to minimize it through the available methods.  Since it all has to hit a bank or go through an exchange, the IRS can see it at some point.  Otherwise I'd have many more options.

Here's the coin I am talking about.

https://www.mitrade.com/insights/news/live-news/article-3-941448-20250708

Different articles talk about how $MUTM does this better, does that faster, competes with Cardano, etc.

I couldn't care less.

All I care about is buy low + sell high = PROFIT!!!

After hearing about it for a while, I decided to YOLO a few hundred bucks into MUTM, just in case it actually does take off.  I looked at the site and it said I could download Trust wallet to the Chrome browser.  I didn't want a phone wallet.  I have an Android phone.

But once I log into my Trust wallet and select Buy & Sell, it gives a long list of coins I can buy, and MUTM isn't in the list.  There's a QTUM, but I think that's different.

So how do I buy MUTM?

I tried making an account on the test.deribit site, and it says banned country.  Can I not do anyhing from the USA?  I tried Canada too, it also didn't work.  Got to use a VPN from an allowed country to even use it?

And it showed bitcoin options for June 25 and 27, but nothing for June 26.

How do I get in on the June 26 call option?
What options you are talking about, in trading in the crypto market there are generally three options that you do (spots, margins, futures) as far as I know there is no option to buy June 26.

What do you mean, what am I talking about?  Watch the link I posted in the first video!  It said $300,000 call option.  That is all I know.  I don't know the technical terms, all the options / derivatives whatevers.

All I know so far is make a put bet on it, saying I don't think it'll reach $300K by then, and collect a nice profit.  And I only know to make a put bet because someone in another post in this topic said what calls and puts are for.  If I put $1000 on it, I wonder how much I would get if it doesn't reach $300K by June 26.  Does that depends on what dollar figure Bitcoin does reach by June 26?

I'll go make an account on the testnet and see what I can see there.

How can I put some money on this, to create a nice retirement fund for myself?  I know little to nothing about puts and calls, only that you can make some big money fast if you bet it right.  I'm willing to drop $1000 on it, big deal if I lose.

What sort of account do I need and where, to place my bet?

With so many terahashes flying around, would a fast internet connection be of any help, or an average speed one will do just as well, since everyone has the block that is being worked on?

I looked up a recent block, it had 18 leading zeroes in the hash that solved it.  18.  The chances of making a hash that fits that criteria are very low.

Preparing to BUY IN to altcoins again soon, find the flaws in my plan.
by
Sergeant Major
on 18/03/2025, 16:56:28 UTC
I've got $10,000 sitting, ready to send to an exchange and buy a few alt coins.  I've been doing some research and watching some crypto "experts" on youtube for a while now.

At this time, I am HODLing 1000 DOGE and 750 XRP.

For my next investment, I am thinking of buying into Solana, XRP, and Cardano.  Maybe a little Chainlink also, and maybe a couple thousand more DOGE.

I don't think crypto prices have bottomed yet, I'm trying to catch the proverbial "falling knife" for maximum profits to me.

But I'm watching and waiting.  I am thinking that 45/47 and Elon, and all the things that they are doing, plus interest rates, plus the economy being in the recession that no one wants to admit we are in yet, will all contribute to crypto prices falling further before things start to turn around.

What am I doing wrong, ans what would you do?

I was thinking of buying some Solana if the prices keep falling, then riding it to massive profits.  Good plan?

Just need to figure out why coin prices are crashing, and where the bottom is.  I have 6 grand in cash to invest, but I'd have to put it in the bank to get onto the crypto exchange.  There's other ways but they charge too much of a fee for me.

I will return to you 90% of the BTC you send to me, with the transactions from the exchanges you require.  I already have accounts on several exchanges.

Re: What if I lost coins to a scam, for my taxes?

To answer a question asked in the above responses, I did not convert the 3.32 ETH to cash to send it out.  It was transferred to an external Coinbase wallet, according to the people at Coinbase I spoke to.  I kept a screenshot of the transaction details, as it was just after I sent it that I began to feel the "Oh SHIT......" coming on.
If i understood you correctly, the perpetrators of this 'Elon Musk crypto scam' received the stolen funds you transferred to them from your Coinbase account on their own Coinbase account, it is strange to see scammers receiving stolen funds on kyc platforms. Did you report this loss when it happened? I know it is almost impossible to recover stolen funds, but you have nothing to lose and it was sent to a kyc platform. As for tax, if you can prove that your funds was stolen, i don't think you should have any problem.

This all happened on August 13, the day that Elon Musk was going to have the long meeting with President TRUMP.  I was all excited to watch it, and when I got on youtube just before the meeting was supposed to start, I saw the supposedly fake video of Elon pushing his coin doubling thing, and that's where I pwned myself to the tune of 3.32 ETH, or $9000.  I'm still amazed I didn't at least google it first, I know better than this.

When I got in touch with Coinbase reps about it, they were able to look up the transaction and that's where this talk of an external coinbase wallet comes from, that's what they said.  I tried a couple times to talk to someone and get a better answer.

I posted about this a few months ago.  Through some sheer brain dead dumbassery on my part, I sent 3.32 ETH worth $9000 to an Elon Musk crypto scam a few months ago.

My Coinbase account will show it as a withdraw, but it was lost to a scam.

So when Coinbase sends me a 1099-K or whatever the tax form is, how can I allow for this as a LOSS, not taking a profit?

Yes, I know it is a long shot, but I figured I'd try, maybe some whale is feeling generous and is willing to help someone besides themselves.

In reality, I'm now at the stage of letting my remaining funds sit, reassessing the entire market and several of the more popular coins in particular.  Seeing which has the potential to start rebuilding my profits.

Know what I think is a possibility?  Again, I know it is a long shot, but I think this may have been some supernatural / guardian angel / the universe type of event.  In the same way that you might mysteriously lose your car keys when you're trying to get out the door to go to work, and you find them 10 minutes later and wonder why the hell they were in the spot you found them in.  And the bigger story is, that delay was created in order for you to get in the car 10 minutes later and miss being in a big car accident or something like that.  Who knows?  It could happen.  I'm still amazed at how the EFF I thought this Elon coin doubling thing was a good idea and "YEAH LET'S SEND $9000 RIGHT NOW", I must have been influenced in some way, because I've been in the crypto game 11 years and I've seen lots of scams and I know better than this.

No one, whale or otherwise, has PM'd me yet, claiming anything, just sayin'.....

And yes, I've been waiting for coin prices to surge up from the recent halvening, but it hasn't happened yet.  Now that I have pwned myself on my crypto assets like a dumbass, I need to have the crypto market skip the next price surge.  For whatever reason, be it the upcoming election, the worsening economy which is headed for recession, or whatever, I need crypto prices to CRASH OUT HARD right now, the prices of top coins like BTC, SOL, and maybe ETH, have to go low, low, lllooowww, so I can buy in cheap.  Then and only then can prices turn around and blast to record highs.

I need to build a new fortune after practically giving away the last one to a scam I should have seen coming, like an idiot.  I still can't believe I did that.  Stunning.

Over the years I've been into crypto, since early 2013, I've noticed that I have a knack for buying or selling just a couple days too soon or too late.  And it happened again here.

I'd been HODLing Helium HNT for years.  I got into Helium mining back in '21, and after getting 10 hotspots up and running and mining and holding my coins, plus buying some more coins when prices were low, I had a few thousand HNT.  When prices finally popped early this year, I sold all my HNT around $5, and the little bits of a few other crapcoins, like Cardano, Polygon, etc.  I had a solid $17,400 in CASH in my trading account.  In order to get the HNT, I spent around $7000 on Helium mining hotspots, as well as paying people at a couple houses $50 per month to have my hotspots there to cover the area and earn lots of coins off the hotspots, because that's how Helium works.  Do your own research on that, the hotspots are nearly useless now.  For the last year+, they were only mining IOT, which I'd swap to HNT in my phone app and sent to my exchange account.

Then, after I sold my HNT at $5.... it went up.  $6, $7, $8, almost to $11.  I was distressed, to say the least, if I'd held it a week or 2 longer it would have been very profitable.

So then began a cycle of prices ups and down in HNT.  Up to 8, down to 6, up to 9, down to 7, up to 8, down to 6, etc.

This when on for a couple months.  Finally one day it dropped to $5.30 and them popped to about $6.50.  I missed buying in at $5.30 by a couple hours because I'd left the house.  So I said OKAY, next time it dips to $5.30, I'm IN!!!!

So a day or 2 later, if dropped to $5.30, I went all in, and......  It dipped to $4.

I said many bad words.  Then it rose to $5.20.  Well, I can't sell now to get out, because that would be a loss, and I don't do losses.  And with my luck, it'll pop way back up after I sell.

Thus began a 3 month cycle up ups and downs, mostly down.  A few times it rose to the mid $5's, and I was thinking "Mmmmm, I need $6.40 to sell, so I can have an even $20,000 in my account after exchange fees.

Finally, HNT rose to the mid $5's, enough for my to take about 1500 of my 3200 HNT coins and sell them and use the cash to buy something I'd been planning on getting.

Then the early August jobs and inflation reports came in, and dipped the whole market down, Ethereum went down to $2200.  Somehow, HNT recovered to around $4.70 pretty quickly, ahead of other coins.  So I thought HEY!  The move here is to use this temporary advantage in price differences to swap my HNT into the much more stable ETH, and let it ride, ETH is going to come back up, it is almost guaranteed profits!

So I swapped my 1700 remaining HNT into ETH, along with half an ETH I bought for $1100 in cash, so I now had 3.6 ETH purchased at around $2500 per ETH.  HNT was at $4.70 or so.

Since then, in the last week, ETH went ot $2700 and back down a little.  HNT went to $5, then $6, then up and down a bit,, and now I jsut checked and it is at $ 7.93!

If I had done nothing, and just left my HNT alone, and not used my brains to figure things out and manipulate the market for better profits, I'd have (1700 X 7.93) = $13,481 in my account now.

Fuck my life. Roll Eyes

I'm going to tell you what I did, and you can laugh and think "Wow, what a dumbass".  I deserve it.  If nothing else, LEARN from this.

August 12, just prior to 8 pm.  I'm getting on the computer to watch the Musk / Trump interview, it's probably gonna be good.  I don't have a Twitter / X account, but that's ok, it will probably be streamed on youtube.

So I get on youtube, and type something like "Elon Trump" in the search box.  First thing that comes up is some video of Elon Musk giving a speech, 21,000+ people are watching it, and Elon is talking about how we need to expand the use of crypto, he will double your coins to further its use, and scan this square bar code right here on the screen, it won't be displayed anywhere else. It leads to musktrump.io  .

So at the moment I'm thinking "If Elon is giving out this thing himself it must be okay, right?".  Not necessarily.

So I start getting into my trading account, thinking how much should I risk on this, all the money in my account is used for crypto bets, it is not my daily food and bill money.  I'm having to do this on my phone, because you can't scan the screen with a desktop PC.

I'm reading it quickly, send in your coins and we will send double the mount back.  Yeah yeah, I've heard this scam before, but this is different, this came from Elon Musk himself, it's got to be okay.

So what the hell, take a shot, and instead of sending in maybe 1 ETH or something small, I sent in $9000 worth, or 3.32 ETH.

So then I'm getting a chat box popping up in my phone from the website I just sent my ETH to, saying that "Oh, you have to send TWO different coins in to get the deal".  I'm arguing with them, saying No I don't, that's not in the rules, etc.  And I changed screens on my phone to go back and reread everything, then couldn't get back to the chat box.

10 minutes goes by, my coins haven't been sent back, single or doubled.  An hour.  A day, all week.  F@CK MY LIFE!!!!!

Afterwards, I went back to the site and looked around more.  Hmmm, no contact info, no Help or Support tabs, no way to reach anyone there except by sending coins.

And on top of all this, when I was in the middle of getting the trade ready, someone called me on the phone I'm trying to do the trade on.  What followed was 5 minutes of "yeah yeah" conversation, trying to get them off the phone so I could continue.  You'd think that would have kicked some sense into my head, and woke me up from this, but no, it didn't.

I didn't even bother to google search something like "elon musk crypto coin giveaway" or any such thing.  I did AFTER I screwed up then I learned about the deep fake videos and such things involved with this.

So now I'm in this situation.  The cash lost wasn't my base amount to invest with, but it was more or less the entire amount of profit I've made on crypto coins this year.  PM me with any information or for a receive address or whatever.

I had $10,000 in my crypto account.  I say HAD, because I made an extremely stupid trade earlier this week that stuns me I didn't research it first.  I think back to it and wonder WTF was I thinking.  I know better than this.

So I now have about $800 in my account, and I need to multiply it quickly to get back what was lost.

Anyone got a hot tip on a pump and dump, or a coin that is currently low priced but will be popping way up soon?  PM me.

Thanks.
